2022-23 Penn State Nittany Lions

After one, it's Penn State up 1-0 on a goal from Kiara Zanon. Shots on goal are 14-12 for Penn State, and Penn State took the only penalty. Syracuse didn't have a shot on goal for the first seven minutes of the game, but started to get into it when they got their powerplay chance. The second half of the period looked more even, but I think Penn State is really getting the better chances so far.

After two, Penn State is up 3-0 on goals from Mya Vaslet and Alyssa Machado. Syracuse took the only penalty of the period. Shots on goal are 25-14 for Penn State. Penn State dominated the second period.

Penn State beats Syracuse 4-0 on a third period goal from Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal were 40-17 for Penn State, and they took the only third period penalty. Syracuse was never in this game after the first period, and hopefully Penn State stays on the gas tomorrow, as they've never swept Syracuse and it would be nice to finally do that. Passing was much better than usual, but I'm still going to complain about defenders bending at the offensive blue line instead of pinching. It didn't matter much today, but I'd love to see that change.

4-0 win and you are still complaining. That's a tough customer. 17 shots only is shocking for Syracuse. Bothun with two shutouts in a row!

After one at Penn State, it's Penn State up 4-1 against Syracuse, on goals from Kiara Zanon, Olivia Wallin, Julie Gough, and Izzy Heminger. Shots on goal are 15-10 for Penn State, and each team took two penalties. This looks just like yesterday's first period.

After two, Penn State is up 6-3 on Syracuse, with goals from Eleri MacKay and Kiara Zanon. Shots on goal are 25-15 for Penn State, and each team took a penalty in the second. Syracuse started the second period on fire, all over Penn State, but the tide turned about halfway through, and Penn State really turned it on to take the game over again.

Penn State sweeps Syracuse with a final score of 11-3, on third period goals from Olivia Wallin, Maeve Connolly, Elleri MacKay, Julie Gough, and Kiara Zanon for her first career hat trick. Shots on goal were 40-18 for Penn State, and Penn State took the only penalty of the third period. I don't know how this one got so out of hand, but once Penn State started scoring they just never got off the gas. This is (finally) their first sweep of Syracuse, ever, so that monkey is off their backs.

Kampersal seemed awful calm and optimistic in his live appearance on the PSU radio show. Bothun had a great weekend. The offense has been getting production in all sorts of places. The D limited Syracuse to under 20 shots both games. I noticed Flanagan and his assistant are coaching some type of USA hockey team. Maybe Syracuse should have kept the assistant. Glad to see Bothun come out on top of DeSmet as those are last two CHA goalie of the year award winners and Bothun has to have the leg up in the rubber match now. Of course the Mercyhurst goalie may have a say in it all, but this is purely just talking about the rubber match between the last two CHA award winners. I guess the Mercyhurst goalie would be characterized as the spoiler.

My goodness, that was the coolest goal I’ve seen in a while. And the barehand handshake post celebration. Well done!

I don’t recall a Michigan in womens college hockey. This was cool … let’s see an actual Michigan too.

I've always referred to the original as the "Leggendary Goal," in honor of goal scorer Mike Legg. I was actually in the building that day at Munn. (Michigan State was hosting a Men's Hockey Regional)

Murphy's Law: My seat location couldn't have been farther from the play, and what actually happened didn't register with me. It was only after the game, speaking with a friend by phone, that I got the rest of the story. She was amped up, and said: Hey! You were there for the special goal!

My Not-In-The-Know Response: What special goal? You mean the wrap around where the goalie was slow getting to the post?

Naturally I've seen the replay countless times. And I do feel fortunate that I was an "eyewitness." But I've always felt a little sheepish that I missed the lacrosse component when watching live. Though as far as I can remember, everyone else in my section missed it too. Or at least didn't verbalize any sort of response. So there is some comfort in that. (weak smile emoticon here)

I thought it was pretty cool to see someone even think about a Michigan, but a freshman? That's some top-level confidence. I did like the cheeky barehanded handshake afterwards, too.
