2021-22 Penn State Nittany Lions

After one period, a much improved Penn State team leads 2-1, on goals from Natalie Heising and Julie Gough. Penn State leads the shots on goal by 11-4, and both teams have taken one penalty (both goals were on the powerplay). Passing is much better today, unlike yesterday's slow lazy passes...today they're hitting sticks. The effort is greatly improved as well - Penn State is going after pucks that they sat and watched yesterday, and looks much more determined to dictate the pace. Brown has a few really good players, so I think they're going to be better than they were a couple years ago.

(Edit: Heising's goal tied her for the program record for goals...or points...or both, I can't remember)

After two, Penn State is up 3-2 on a goal from Kiara Zanon - all three Penn State goals have been powerplay goals. Natalie Heising got the assist, but I'm not sure where that puts her in the program record book...either tied or top for points. Shots on goal, according to the live stats, are 41-15 for Penn State...the announcers say 22-8. Brown isn't giving up, for sure, but Penn State spent a lot of time in the offensive zone in the second period.

Penn State takes this one by a score of 5-2 on third period goals from Alyssa Machado and an empty-netter from Rachel Weiss. The live stats now say final shots on goal were 36-14 for Penn State. Brown took three penalties to Penn State's two. Brown looked a lot better than expected, and they have some really quick players, so they're off to a good start despite the outcome from this weekend.

Penn State was a lot different than yesterday, so somebody must have put some spark in their step. I'm still frustrated by the defense's puck handling, but I won't bother talking about it (yet). They're going to get tested hard by Mercyhurst next weekend, and before this season started I would've been looking forward to that series, but not so much right now. Consistency is a problem, and that's the problem. If they decide to come out of the gates blazing, every game, then it's on.

They looked really good today and really controlled the flow of the game. Forwards are so fast and some of them have some wicked shots, and that was fun to watch.

Can't complain about a win. Weiss had a nice pass to Machado and was rewarded with an empty netter. Heising's wristers get on you in a hurry. As good as Heising's shot is, Gough's might be better. Brown was limited to 15 shots in game 2. I think in 6 out of 8 games PSU has limited opponents to under 16 shots which makes their record even more of an enigma. Back to the drawing board for Mercy Hurst which is always a contested series. The battle of the Clarkson transfers adds an added twist with Pigeon and Mitchell.

Heising's goal was so quick, and so was Kiara Zanon's right after that one. Olivia Wallin has a wicked shot, too, when she gets a chance to shoot the way she wants to. Here's a highlight video of the goals from yesterday:

Three articles ahead of the Penn State vs Mercyhurst series tomorrow and Saturday, the first of their CHA conference schedule. Tomorrow's game is at 6:00 (Eastern), and Saturday's game is at 2:00 (Eastern). Both games are streaming on Stretch Internet at $9.99 per game (https://portal.stretchinternet.com/mercyhurstwhockey/). This is a huge road series for Penn State, and will be a big marker for where they're at. Mercyhurst looks as good this season as they always do, and they have two good goalies that they rotate, so this is going to be a big test for Penn State.

Kampersal is pulling out all the stops with a practice at Mercy Hurst. Sisto will bring his schematics for sure tonight. Nothing like a rivalry game.

After one period at Mercyhurst, it's 0-0. I don't have the video stream, so I don't know how play is going, but Penn State leads the shots on goal by 15-4, and that's surprising. No penalties for either team. Penn State must have come out with a purpose.

The lines are shaken up because Olivia Wallin isn't dressed for the game, so the top line isn't the top line, and the others are shuffled because of it.

After two, it's Mercyhurst up 3-2 on Penn State, after what must have been a wild second period. Since I don't have the video stream, I'll watch for Lindsey's report on that one...wow, crazy.

Prommersberger and Connolly score their first goals. The box score shows the rest of some undesirable stats. Rather than state the obvious stats, the team only had 9 team blocks, the team needs to average 15 a game. Kampersal always seems to have his teams do better the second game.

It was an entertaining game, back and forth action and clean. Good pace. Penn outshot Mercy by a healthy margin, Mercy still not getting enough shots away after clean faceoff wins and possession. Both teams had other scoring chances than the goals on the scoreboard but both goalies made some big saves. A healthy crowd of 700+ makes it fun for both teams to play, hopefully it’s the same today.

I honestly think that every team in CHA should do what it takes to put butts in those seats and fill the standing room. Hand out free tickets to area schools, girls or boys hockey teams, etc. You may lose out on some ticket sales, but the food or bar concessions will make more $ and the word will spread on how great these games are to watch.

Nice on a healthy crowd of 700! I like your thoughts on getting fans in the seats. A nice 6 o'clock start after work or classes are over for most people helps along with rainy weather.

yea I think Hurst does a decent job. Not sure it’s 700 in the building or if that’s the season ticket sale plus dropins but it’s a fun atmosphere In a small rink. Border opening soon should be fun with more parents at the games.

Free tickets or very affordable tix for kids is a big thing. Or have a fee but waive it several times a year. Our high school charges for kids and it’s brutal, the little ones can’t last a whole game and as a parent you’re a bit distracted. I’m a die hard women’s sports fan but $30 for me and my 2 littles to go to a girls high school soccer playoff game. Extra ridiculous when you consider there are fewer chances for kids to watch girls/women play. Of course I paid and
went, but I’m a rarity.

Why no Wallin last night?

After one, it's 0-0 at Mercyhurst. Stats and scoreboard don't match, but stats say Penn State leads the shots on goal by 10-3 (scoreboard says 11-5, so whatever). Mercyhurst took the only penalty. Both teams came out flying, and both defenses are shutting things down, with lots of CHA-type game play and CHA refs that aren't in love with the sound of their whistles. It was a fast period and some fun hockey to watch (got the video today).

After two, it's Penn State up 2-0 on goals from Lexi Bedier and Julie Gough. Shots on goal are 22-5 for Penn State, according to the stats. Penn State took a late penalty, so Mercyhurst will start the third with a little powerplay time left. That period was pretty much all Penn State. A big difference I see in this game is Penn State finally passing the puck with some steam, and not sitting back in the defensive zone playing with it. Also, they're going aggressively after the puck, something they haven't been doing, and it's working. Hopefully, that sticks in their heads. Get after it, don't sit and wait for it. Good hockey so far.
