2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Yeah, that’s what hurts. Love the guys we have coming back next year, love our coaches, love the program, but we’ve never had a team like that. I feel bad for UMD, not getting a shot at a 3-peat, and UND had a great team with a legit shot at winning it, but they’ll reload, and their fans have experienced a lot of Frozen Fours. For us, who knows?
But thanks to those guys for giving us their all every game, and best of luck in all they do. They’re champions in my book.

Yeah, the way this season actually ended was a blow to several programs, but I'm not sure if there was one hurt more than Minnesota State. They had a team that really was capable of winning it all, or at a minimum win the program's first NCAA Tournament game. The fact they didn't get that shot, coupled with the team being lead by several key seniors, is doubly painful. For programs like Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota, Cornell, Denver, and Boston College, they were all top notch this season and could have won it all, but those programs have been there and done that. While I don't know from personal experience, from what I've gathered from discussions with friends who follow other programs (and from the way it shows on the ice), there is absolutely nothing like your school winning it all for the first time. Minnesota State had that opportunity this season, and it is sad to see they got that opportunity taken away by circumstances beyond their control.

All that being said, Coach Hastings is top notch, and I have no doubt that Minnesota State will be back in contention again real soon and will get the opportunity some day to lift that national title. I just hope, unlike the simulation, it doesn't come against North Dakota. :)

By the way, great job on the simulation threads, FS23.

North Dakota defeated Denver in the final of the simulation at eLynah. No details were posted.

Leave it to the eggheads to come up with the right result! :p:D:D

So we had:

USCHO:
Minnesota State over North Dakota

eLynah:
North Dakota over Denver

Unfortunately, we'll never know how it would have played out through CHN's simulation, as they didn't do the right matchups. ;)

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

I’m satisfied with this simulation. Given that Mankato went 3-0-1 against UMD and UMD, and Cornell played neither of these teams, I have to say this is the most deserved (we’ll just ignore Mankato’s NCAA curse....). In the real world, Mankato probably would have blown a big lead and lost in regionals and UMD would down UND in the championship for their third straight, but Mankato’s regular season results earned this sim championship. But Mankato did great in empty arenas which would have been the accurate Covid simulation. UMD’s success would be questionable, but without a big traveling fan base, not sure how UND would do without their home advantage on the road

And if other simulation had UND and DU, well... I just don’t know. DU did really great against HE teams BC and UMass (at home), but showed some serious deficiencies against UND and UMD. But if the brackets aligned properly, I could see it.

Again, really too bad to see it end this way. So many teams were robbed of possible 9th championships, 3-peat, or first title. But congratulations to all 16 teams who’s season remained until it was cut short. They’re all co-champions in my book

Just catching up now with this game; superb play-by-play, FS23. Almost like being there. Many thanks for the entire tournament simulation!

FS23,

The USCHO article mentions that Jordan Kawaguchi was named the tourney MVP. Did they just decide that, or did I miss it in this thread?

In any case, I think that makes him the first not to play for the winning team since the undeserving Chris Terreri in 1985. :D

Every time I watch the game, RPI's game winning goal the refs missed the offsides call.

USCHO selected the tournament MVP. I didn't have anything to do with that, but thought it was a nice touch.

It also brings up one of my favorite odd facts. Not counting Kawaguchi, North Dakota is tied for the most players named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament at 8 (all Forwards BTW). Guess what program is tied with North Dakota? (Answer in white below if you don't want to guess/look it up).

Boston University, including two in 1960. Denver is third with 7. Michigan, despite having 9 titles, has only 5.
