2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

The court is already packed, who gives AF about norms anymore.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Biden's already stepping in it, going on The View to clarify that his apology to Anita Hill wasn't really an apology.

I give it a month until his numbers swan dive into the 10-15% range (cranky Boomers who don't think he did anything wrong).

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

So I'm going to not dismiss Biden's chances AND stand up for court packing! Here goes:

Biden may very well sink like a stone. Time will tell, but if he's STILL at 30% in national polling when the voting starts pundidiotry and Dems need to take him way more seriously than they are now. In a field of 20 with the contests coming fast and furious, the people with name recognition, easy access to campaign funds, and a reservoir of goodwill amongst the primary voters have a distinct advantage. Right now that's Biden, Sanders, and maybe Warren and Lizzy and Bernie are competing for the same voters.

Regarding court packing the FDR example isn't a good one. He wanted to change the court because he didn't like their rulings. I'm not on board with that. However, the rightful court balance needs to be restored from the stolen Garland seat. That means adding two SCOTUS members. I'm not calling for adding 20 because that's dirty pool, but you can't allow one side to disregard all norms that define the republic while you play by rules they've long since abandoned. The SCOTUS has been expanded legislatively during its history (it started with 3 I believe). That's a legal thing to do and it has precedent, while Itch's ploy may not have been against any law but went against the entire precedence of the nation's history. Every Dem of every stripe should be on board with this.

This. The Republicans are going to steal your lunch. If you're too principled to steal it back, have fun starving.

And what is to stop them from doing the same thing when they take control? The unintended consequences need to be factored in here.

Hard to play that game with a side that does not nor has ever cared. You don't do it they may just do it anyway. They don't care about consequences. Never have, never will.

Healthcare. Better jobs for the unemployed/underemployed. Immigration reform.

HM: Rebuild ties with our allies, gun reform (maybe - I wouldn't bleat this one too loudly on the campaign trail)

There's the core message. Run with it! Too much emphasis on anything else is a loser.

Yeah...that doesnt make the idea any better. In fact it makes it ten times worse.

It's abundantly clear that the choices are fighting fire with fire or politely asking the Republicans to stop committing arson. The second choice is getting us nowhere since they ignore and mock us.

Exactly. And in the case of the court it’s not unforeseen or that they’d do the exact same thing if they had a consistent SC minority.

There’s also a case to be made that having more justices on it might improve its efficiency.

Most people want basic common sense gun laws (background checks on private sales) and I think that’d be an asset. Especially with young voters. I wouldn’t go with trying to overturn the second amendment or anything though :D

They would, but they're also doing that already (Garland to Gorsuch). So the question is why should democrats care when the GOP clearly doesn't.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Increasing the size of the court will be seen as more extreme than the Merrick Garland fiasco and will backfire
