2018 WJC Relegation Game

Re: 2018 WJC Relegation Game

You disgust me

This can't be the first time.

If it helps any I will root for the US men to beat the Canadian men. Not the women, though, since the Canadian team is essentially a Cornell alumnae squad.

I see an epic Denmark/Belarus three game series with Belarus relegated to IA.

No doubt.

I got to see Denmark twice in exhibition games in Rochester. Though they are bad, they have some decent players and one decent goalie. Granted, not having seen Belarus, I still think Denmark has got to be better than them.

I also saw Russia twice. They did not look good. At all. And so far, that has proven to be true for the real games.

I also saw Slovakia against Russia in an exhibition game. Slovakia should have won (lost in a shootout). Slovakia impressed me, and thus did not surprise me they managed to beat the USA. Though, it’s still a big upset.

Sweden really impressed me, though granted I saw them play Denmark. Nonetheless, it will not surprise me if they take gold, and definitely should win their group.

My people.

We've now had the Czechs beat the Russians and the Slovaks beat the Americans. It's a good week to be an oily Bohunk. :)

Canada must be happy the Norwegians didn't make the tournament.

I thought Bohunks were Hungarians? Same Empire though.

Bohunks are Bohemians -- The Czech lands are Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia.

Confusing Czechs with Hungarians is a good way to get your throat cut on a Saturday night in České Budějovice. We don't care for them. (Though it's nothing compared to how Slovaks feel about the Bozgor because the Slovaks had to live under their rule the way the Czechs had to live under the Austrian Krauts.)

And here I thought RUS would be the boldest move, but ... no, no, it's Bob Motzko. < clap, clap, clap-clap-clap-clap >

What an egg last night by USA.

Here's where the non-normal bracketing this year could really hurt --> USA and CAN should not be in the same pool this year based on last year's results. They did it so they could play a pool play game outside. Now the USA will probably pick up a double humiliating loss in a few hours: the second in under 24 hours, and in Buffalo Bills jerseys no less. < facepalm >

If Kep can cheer for his Slo-Chech ancestors, can I cheer for GER and RUS?

It's spectacular!
It allows, as a friend (also GfR) says, ...
I can have a shot and a beer as long as the shot is vodka and the beer is dark!

I had no idea about Volga Germans. I know there are German communities scattered all over Eastern Europe -- many of the mining towns in the Czech lands (any town that starts with the word "Banská") invited Germans in for their expertise and/or were founded by German proto-capitalists. They controlled the capital and the town government and hired local yokels like My People to work. This included the town of Joachimsthal, from where we get the word "dollar" because the silver mine and mint were so prolific. This was actually the basis of the Nazi claims for German reunification prior to the war. The Czechs forcibly deported most of the German population after the war as they were understandably not very popular in town.

The Hohenzollerns also encouraged ethnic Germans to settle in Pomerania and along the Baltic coast up as far as Lithuania and Latvia and weren't too shy about genociding the local pagan tribes to clear some Lebensraum, another charming habit Hitler later had nostalgia for (though to be fair the Balts, Poles, Livonians, Sudovians, and my personal favorite the Zemgalians who the Krauts were slaughtering weren't exactly paragons of civil society either).
