2017 Women's World Championships

Re: 2017 Women's World Championships

Interesting that the very high majority of reactions to this article were not favorable to the Women's' team objective/complaints or the Senators involved.

NEVER read the comments section on any article related to a women's issue. It will be filled with the most misogynistic stuff you'll ever see

lol............you think people have a vitriol button that gets pushed? I started to read some of the comments following the Mpls StartTribune article on this subject D2D referred us to recently........I would have been better of following your advice.

Re: 2017 Women's World Championships

It would appear that Plattsburgh Sr. Erin Brand has joined the ranks of D3 players who have declined advances from USA Hockey.

So far I've been very impressed that players from D1 across to the ACHA teams have held firm, sacrificing what for many would be a personal opportunity of a lifetime for the good of the whole. I hope there aren't scab players who haven't come forward yet and this rejection from players far and wide get USAH to do the right thing by these women. I hope I'm not speaking to soon in thinking that the American working class can learn from this kind of solidarity....

Ironically, I'm generally anti-union. But there are times when these movements serve a purpose and are needed. This is one of them.

The players obviously did a lot of prep work long before they made the announcement two weeks ago that they would be boycotting absent a renegotiated contract. It's all been well planned out, with enough thoroughness that this can't possibly have come as a surprise to USA Hockey. And yet, USAH has handled this incompetently in every way possible. They've stepped on rakes that didn't even exist.

The most telling element comes from the revelation that the players and USAH negotiators apparently had a tentative agreement on a deal last Monday, and yet the association came back Thursday with a different proposal, offering the players less than they had agreed to on Monday, as well as sending out the emails looking for replacement players. It's just inexcusable that the negotiators hadn't huddled with the board prior to those negotiations to discuss exactly what the boundaries were for a deal the board would accept. (Either that, or they did huddle and the negotiators exceeded their authority, which is also inexcusable.)

All that accomplished was demonstrating that there wasn't any point in the players continuing to talk to the USAH officials, since they clearly lacked the authority to strike a deal, along with destroying whatever trust remained. That's the moment this completely fell apart.

Re: 2017 Women's World Championships

Good point! In fact a high percentage of Yahoo articles are garbage as well... usually a major bias promoting one particular angle

Possibly true of Yahoo stories in general, but their hockey coverage, led by Greg Wyshynski, is pretty good.

They don't have to. They can simply pay out stipends, very similar to the way USA Figure Skating does it.

As for sponsors footing the bill, sure that would work (that's a similar model to how USA Soccer supports their teams), but of course, you have to find the sponsors.

I guess my point is if there are market forces that bring the sponsors then awesome. And if not, well, the sport is a hobby and they can train when theyre not working like the rest of us. Ted Williams sold insurance when baseball had no revenue, etc.

So, if I understand you correctly MLB was not making money when Ted Williams played and he played it as a hobby?

Exactly.

They've stepped on rakes that didn't even exist.

I can't stop laughing. All I can picture is that great scene from the Simpsons involving Sideshow Bob and all the rakes.

March 31, USA vs. Canada, 7:30pm ET.

We may finally find the metaphorical answer to the great philosophical question -- the sound of one hand clapping.

Re: 2017 Women's World Championships

I have some issue with the way the players presented their side of the issue, but USA Hockey's responses have done nothing but show them in a bad light and the financial filing show them in an even worse light.

Also, why should I have be required to pay them money every year so my daughter can play hockey when they spend virtually none of it on girls and women? As it is I've always thought having to pay them so my daughter can play is a form of extortion.

Re: 2017 Women's World Championships

I suppose the big question is if USA Hockey decides that this is a full-time job for these women. Everyone knows that technically, it is their full time job because they wouldn't succeed without training year round like they do. However, how does USA Hockey decide who to pay, how much, and when? While there isn't a ton of turnover with players each Olympic year, there will be some veterans who may not make the team in the future and some newbies who will slide in last minute. What then? The veteran player will have received funding the last few years and the new player had not - how is that balanced out? As many people have stated, women's hockey just isn't a revenue generating sport (which is clearly a shame), but it is the cold hard truth. These women put their all into it, but realistically, they are not "professional" athletes as one thinks of a professional athlete. The NWHL should have been the bump as well as the paycheck for these women to subsist and become professional on a national scale and it just hasn't happened. They are caught between a rock and a hard place, but so is USA Hockey.

My daughter has attended US National Development Camp for a few years. The camp cost us $150 (plus travel) for 6 or 7 days of hockey camp. Those cost far more than $150 PP to run. So some of your money is going there. And what are the annual fees, like $45?

I agree with you here but the real issue is that the boy's camp is better, they get more ice, more games and they get more free swag. I'm not saying that swag is important but it is more evidence of the disparate treatment between the two programs.

Again, just look at what USA Soccer's agreement is with their women's national team when this situation occurred in that sport.

The logistics have been worked out before. It can be worked out again. What sport it is, doesn't matter.

It's the willingness. Not the logistics.

Unfortunately, you just foresaw the future. They're going to have "Kellogg's" on their jerseys in '18 instead of USA. "I'm excited and proud to put on the "Kellogg's" jersey one last time for the Gold Medal game against Canada on Friday!
(or should it be "Mayo Clinic":D)

Sean

When his sport wasnt making him enough money he got a job on the side. Lots of people have done this; NFL practice squad guy, amateur wrestlers, indy wrestlers, etc. Some of these USA women have had coaching jobs too so theyre not all in the same light.

Sounds like theyre getting what they want so it really doesnt matter what I might think they do or dont "deserve"

But like it says in Rudy deserve aint got nothin to do with it
