Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

How many PWHL games has she played?

I believe none. There are a # of Ontario MAA girls that have made commitments for 2017-18, some without playing in a PWHL game yet. Lots of time for that in the next couple of years I imagine. Schools must like what they see; there are a lot of talented players playing in midget leagues throughout Ontario.

Agreed, looking back, both recent stoney creek commits had very good years playing maa last year as underagers. Can't see them not playing for the pwhl team next year. Always a gamble to commit that early but these ones look solid.

No because she's graduating in 2017 just like these 98s- Rebecca Gilmore, Kyleigh Handzlik, Grace Bowlby, Emily Brown, Linda Essery, Maddie Mills! Skylar Fontaine.....

Strange. Every 98 I know is a jr in highschool this year 14/15. Therefore their senior year of highschool will be 15/16 thus graduating in 2016 and starting university in the fall of 2016 are they all taking a year off school?

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

I think there is a little confusion going on here. There is one '98 that used to play for Stoney Creek for 2013-14 that has committed to SLU for 2016-17. She presently plays for St. Catherines Brock Jr. Badgers MAA and is most likely in gr.11 according to a post in the 2016-17 commitment thread.

According to last seasons' and this seasons' Stoney Creek MAA websites, the other two commits (Klimek and Vasko) are 1999's and in gr.10 making them 2017-18 commits. They played as under-agers on the Stoney MAA team last season. Looks like they were 1 and 2 in team scoring for the 2013-14 season. Both playing MAA again this season as legit-aged MAA players.

Pakidnyc is just getting the threads mixed up or the birth years mixed up. All 98's are on the 16/17 thread.

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

All cleared up then. It looked like Pakidnyc was referring to the latest Stoney commits when I quickly read it. Maybe I jumped the gun......:)

If a player has a late birthday, roughly September to December, they can easily be a grade behind. The birth year is not determinative of their grade or their graduation date.

I thought it was more along the lines that US girls repeat grade 7 to help increase academic and athletic scholarship money for prep high schools. Thus many are a year behind in high school.

No. The difference in ages at the time of graduation is almost always determined by the month they were born and the age at which the student started school. Sometimes parents hold parents back a year from starting school if they feel they are not ready due to a health issue or some other obstacle such as a speech problem. Canadian girls tend to often be younger by comparison when they graduate from high school and enter college, and European players are usually older.

In general, attempting to equate a birth year with a recruiting class is a flawed approach, because the exceptions just cause confusion.

NO I am not getting the threads mixed up. If they graduate in 2017 regardless if they're 98s or 99s, heck I even know of a 97 who's graduating in 2017..,,then they go in the 2017-18 thread. It's based on grad year not birth year. And all of the 98s that I previously mentioned are graduating in 2017.

I do believe the thread title, whether it be 2016 - 17 or 2050 - 51, refers to the year that the recruits listed plan on matriculating at said institution. Nothing to do with birth year or graduation year.

It is fairly common for kids who have completed their freshman year in high school (ie public), to repeat that year if they go either to prep school, or an elite team with accredited academic programs. It is also not uncommon for a senior to play a PG year in the JWHL or at a high level prep program. The thread is still about when they start college, not when life begins or high school ends.

No, kids will repeat a year if they enter a Prep after freshman year.
