2017-2018 Division I Commitments

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

The OSU football team doesn't care for Spartan philosophies much more than it likes Wolverine philosophies.

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

We sat next to Lauren Boyle's dad at a HS game a couple years ago & I asked him specifically about how OSU sold their facilities. He said they sold it as a mark of pride, that they could overcome the poor facilities through superior work. I guess sort of a Spartan philosophy. I guess that could work.
It's important to distinguish between the Fan Experience and the Player Experience.

For the fan, the OSU Ice Rink is a small, plain building that lacks bells and whistles. Modest lobby; bench style seating. Clearly there are other rinks in the WCHA that are much more comfortable for the fan. If that's the priority, we're not getting the recruit.

Similarly, if a player only wants to play in a shiny, new, architectural wonder, we won't get that player either. Hate Wrigley and Fenway? The OSU Ice Rink won't suit.

But ultimately those things don't make much difference to those on the ice. Ever play hockey on any level? Be serious: How often did you think about the fans' seating arrangements during games or practices?

Next, the arrival of Women's D-1 brought substantial renovations to the Ice Rink. Ice quality has generally been quite good from that point forward. Long gone are the days when the outside weather had an impact on the quality of the ice. So last century.

In terms of crowd atmosphere, the small size is actually an asset. 500 fans plus the pep band? The Ice Rink rocks. On the Men's Hockey side, we're all too aware that having a building that's much too large for the event can actually be a bit of handicap.

The other thing that would matter a lot to players is training facilities. Obviously I'm not with the players when they train, but I haven't heard anyone claim they lacked a proper training room, gear or equipment. Unless I'm missing something, training arrangements are comparable to the other OSU sports.

Someone should find out if the OSU football team subscribes to this philosophy. My suspicion is that they don't.
But they do.:p

The vast majority of OSU Football ticketholders sit on bench style seats. There's a discomfort factor; many fans bring seat cushions. (which are often officially licensed souvenirs) By comparison, the chairs at TCF Bank Stadium are positively luxurious!

Don't worry. I understand the point you're really making, and agree with you. Of course the big revenue producer gets all kinds of perks that the "Olympic Sports" don't.

I think Reggie44 is referring to the Big Ten athletic budget that Ohio State has that the other WCHA teams besides UM and UW don't have. Jerseys and tattoos are good but maybe it's that they spend more on snacks.
Jerseys are good. Snacks are good. Tattoos not so much.;)

Actually Minnesota State has pumped a bunch of money into the Verizon Wireless Center making it one of the better facilities in all of women's hockey. The women's team will now be playing all of their games there. From ice to locker room to all other amenities, definitely one of the best in the WCHA if not the country.

OK; fair enough. Didn't realize that. All-Seasons still gives fans from the Upper Midwest a pretty good idea of what the OSU Ice Rink is like, even though that's now a historical reference. But for the sake of accuracy, I'll modify my original post to delete the error.

No worries at all. This is fairly new information. OSU looks as though they are attempting to move in right direction with recent coach hire. Just wish she would move a little faster and recognize top talent.

And I should say for the record that I very much appreciate the update. I'm not traveling as much as I used to. It's good for me for me to keep in mind that memories from 3, 6 or 9 years ago may not be current.:o

It's fairly easy to miss, even for a WCHA fan. There hasn't been a lot of buzz surrounding the Mavericks of late, and they're only a year removed from playing in All-Seasons.

Yes, understandable but they may be on rise with the arrival of JH and the great upgrades in facility.

Also heard that a current top end forward may be transferring out of OSU.. No names but, my nephew goes to OSU and is friends with some of the members of the women's hockey team. It may be just a rumor though.

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

You see that more with recruits however there are cases where a player leaving meets the objectives of both parties.

You hate to see players leave, but if a new coach comes in and they don't fit into the new coach's plans, the player has to do what is best for her. As you alluded to Puckdrop14, sometimes it is mutual. I was hoping we were done with the defections after Alexa Ranahan left, but there may be more.

Re: 2017-2018 Division I Commitments

Does anyone know where RPI 2017 recruit Lauren Severson is playing this year? She does not appear to be on the Chicago Mission roster.
