2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

There's no point in changing the format, like holding it in different cities. They just need to accept that they aren't going to get all new facilities. Just go back to a Salt Lake City, or go back to Sydney, those cities have hosted in the recent past, they have almost all of the facilities needed. Hell, start bidding it out in 2 games packs, the return trip makes it more economically feasible to build a new facility. Say, you get 2020, and 2036 in a pack, so they're not back to back.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

If the games were held in 5 cities in France, would anyone notice it's not "one big event?"

You mean, something like the current European soccer championships in France, or the current Copa America Centenario in the US? You mean like those "one big event" hosted in multiple cities? or the World Cup of soccer?

If the games were held in 5 cities in France, would anyone notice it's not "one big event?" Space it out evenly, have TV coverage just like there is now and nobody will know the difference. Even if it's in the US, have Denver and Salt Lake City co-host the winter olympics. You have more than enough current venues for everything, outside of adequate housing for athletes in Denver.

Part of the draw of the Olympics is that I can go to Track one day and swimming the next. You can do that in Europe because travel is so much easier there. You aren't going to have swimming in NYC and expect people to hop a plane to Dallas or Phoenix for track. However because it is more compact and the rail system is so advanced that you can easily make most trips around European countries that is a plausible to have multiple cities serve as hosts but you couldn't do that anywhere else.

I swear, the run up to this year's Olympics reads like the plot from a bad B movie.

Washington DC to NYC is 225 miles and you'd have DC, Baltimore, Philly, Newark (Jersey!?!?!), and NYC facilities available, plus rail, plus airports, plus interstate highways. But you'd have to get them all to work together.

You could throw in Boston in on that mix as well.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

After the last fiasco, I doubt that the USOC and Boston want anything to do with each other.

It's a marriage made in heaven. The most corrupt organization meets the most corrupt municipality.

Re: 2016 Summer Olympics - Ready or not, here we come!!

I think, if Bost0on was one of several cities to host a couple of events, that wouldn't be so bad.

My personal belief is they should now look into one location to have it at every four years.

I think a 20 year rotation could work. Select one site on each continent that has shown it has the infrastructure to make it work (i.e. no Africa or South America).

Summer could be: LA, London, Beijing, Sydney.

Winter is a little more difficult. Australia gets dropped, and no one in Europe appears to want to host the Winter Olympics anymore. So possibly Vancouver, Salt Lake, Beijing and Norway/Switzerland/somewhere in Europe that would probably bid if it meant a semi-permanent event?

If it's a 20 year rotation, and you're dropping S. America and Africa, then you've just added Antarctica. The games there would be tough on the infrastructure designers.

Well, the Olympics and math never really mixed anyway. :p

Let's scale that back to a 16 year rotation.

Summer: Olympia, Greece / Delhi, India / Los Angeles, USA / Cape Town, South Africa
Winter: Chamonix, France / Sapporo, Japan / Vancouver, Canada / Beijing, China
