2015 World Championship Thread

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

The teams in our chase do have a game in hand, though. They do play each other tomorrow (Belarus vs. Russia, Finland vs. Slovakia); those should be some good ones.

Cue the Tie Breakers:

Step 1: Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly.

Step 2: Should three or more teams still remain tied in points then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive.

Step 3: Should three or more teams still remain tied in points and goal difference then the highest number of goals scored by these teams in their direct games will be decisive

Step 4: Should three or more teams still remain tied in points, goal difference and goals scored then the results between each of the three teams and the closest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied. In this case the tied team with the best result (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. more goals scored) against the closest best ranked-team will take precedence

Step 5: Should the teams still remain tied, then the results between each of the three teams and the next highest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied.

Step 6: Should the teams still remain tied after these five steps have been exercised then Sport considerations will be applied and the teams will be ranked by their positions coming into the Championship (seeding).

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

USA needs to tighten up on D.
Inexcusable to give up that many quality scoring chances to a team of Denmark's ability. Given the USA's inability to take advantage of so many Grade A scoring chances, they were very fortunate to come away with the win.

Like to see Vesey and Eichel bury the puck, neither one has a goal yet.
And those two aren't alone. Way too many whiffs, point blank chances shot wide or right into the goalie's breadbasket. Plus a couple of shots taken where a pass to a wide open teammate on the doorstep would have been the better play. Having just seen the Blackhawks win their series 4-0 against the Wild, I wonder what the score would have been in this game if the U.S. had Patrick Kane in their lineup!

Far too many solo efforts into the offensive zone without puck support too. Surprised M. Reilly has been tentative on offensive, no points. USA started the tournament hot and has cooled off to 7th in scoring efficiency. Both Belarus and Denmark dropped back in a NZ trap to slow USA down and it worked. They've gotta stop trying to be too cute with the puck and get bodies in front.

Yeah, the Wild series was weird. They came in as one of the hottest playoff teams, fell totally flat and never held a lead in any game. They needed Vanek and he was a no show.

Next game: USA (4-1) vs Slovenia (0-5), Sunday, 9:15 CST. I'm 12 hours ahead of CST so a little easier for me to watch this one from Thailand (9:15pm). Not training until late Sat. (today), so was up until 4am this morn. here for the 1:15am start of the Denmark game.

Saw a tweet that Charlie Coyle has joined the team, now that Minnesota is eliminated. I wonder who he knocks out of the lineup (assuming he actually plays).

He should have at least had an assist yesterday on a beautiful set-up to a wide open Brock Nelson who somehow missed a wide open net from point blank range.

If he does play his legs should be fresh! ;) (although he did give a strong effort in the Wild's final loss).

The announcers meantioned several times in the last two games that the U.S. had an open roster spot available and wondered if it would be filled.

Moses is hurt.

Should clarify (and I've fixed the roster on the 1st post) that Coyle steps in for Matteau on the roster - I think that's the open space - but that in terms of the lineup, he'll probably replace Moses at this point, who is injured.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

1-0 victory against Denmark far from impressive.
Hopefully TeamUSA doesn't let Slovenia get its first tournament point tomorrow.

Mike has excellent full ice vision and some of his stunning setup passes are amazing. He's been sitting back though much more than he usually did last season. I think it was the Belarus game, the announcer committed the ultimate faux pas: "And Mike Reilly from the University of Michigan retrieves the puck".:D Another guy never did get Tory Krug's name right. It's "Kroog" and does not rhyme with "drug." It's German.

UPDATE:

With Russia pounding Belarus 7-0, and Finland winning 3-0 over Slovakia there's a three way tie for 1st with Russia, Finland and USA all at the top of Group B with 12 points. If the preliminaries ended today USA would land in 1st on the first tiebreaker, head-to-head. And with two games left before the quarterfinals, USA has the lighter schedule (if we can score some goals, we've dropped to 7th out of 16 in GF).

USA
*Slovenia - Sunday, May 10, 10:15AM EDT
*Slovakia - Tuesday, May 12, 10:15AM EDT

Russia
*Slovakia - Sunday, May 10, 2:15AM EDT
*Finland - Tuesday, May 12, 2:15AM EDT

Finland
*Belarus - Monday, May 11, 10:15AM EDT
*Russia - Tuesday, May 12, 2:15AM EDT

So if the U.S. wins their final two preliminary games they will get the No. 1 seed in Group B, now matter what Russia and Finland do? And if that should come to pass (i.e. they score some goals as you say) how is it then determined which team gets the overall No. 1 seed in the Quarterfinals? (assume the USA and the No. 1 seed in Group A have the same record in the prelims).

QF1 - 1A v 4B
QF2 - 2A v 3B
QF3 - 1B v 4A
QF4 - 2B v 3A

SF1 - QF1 v QF4
SF2 - QF2 v QF3

Czechs always play in Prague regardless of their seed.

Thanks, joect. This format makes a lot of sense.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Charlie Coyle joins the USA this game from the Wild. USA controlling play.

Brock Nelson scores...1-0 USA. Mike Reilly gets the assist on a nice pass in front from behind the net.
