2015 Friendship Four - Brown, Colgate, Mass-Lowell, Northeastern

Re: 2015 Friendship Four - Brown, Colgate, Mass-Lowell, Northeastern

Both games on Friday were league games that count in league standings.

Which I despise. Glad Lowell got the 2 points, but novelty games like this and Frozen Fenway should always be non-conference. There's too much riding on these games. When Lowell/NU played at Frozen Fenway 2 years ago, it was pouring out. I'd be ****ed if I lost a tiebreaker due to something like this.

At least it was played on ice and not slush

Well that was exciting. Fortunately, none of us had to experience cardiac care in the UK.

Wish we could have played more consistently well; seemed like we kept taking the foot off the gas.

Safe travels to all the teams and fans!

It sounds like the trip and tournament were a great success and that they plan to do it again next season. Any idea which teams will be involved?

I thought it was a well-run and enjoyable tournament on and off the ice. I don't feel losing home ice for the two league games hurt either "home" team (and mine yakked it up.)

Arena was first class; Strong dollar helped too.

Surprised by the level of hockey interest and knowledge by the locals. Bottom line is that this tournament has potential.

I thought is was nice that former DI player's (Colin Shields (ME), Mike Radja (UNH), Jeff Mason (PC), Chris Higgins (BU)) and current Belfast Giants were used on the broadcast. There was also a nice interview with UNH great Ralph Cox between periods. Apparently Boston mayor Walsh asked him to get involved with the tournament. He said it was one the best experience he's ever had in hockey.

I heard a couple weeks back from someone in Hockey East that BU is one of the teams next year.

I admit I'm biased but shouldn't the champion get invited back to defend against 3 new teams?

That would make sense, especially since the Belfast Giants are run by a BU guy (Thornton).

Although the "troubles" have officially been resolved, the tensions aren't far below the surface, so sending BC or PC could prove polarizing in some quarters. Hockey is seen as neutral, and therefore provides common ground.

I lived over in England when the troubles were at their height. People died in Belfast all the time. The thought of Belfast still scares the bejeebies out of me. I was verrrrrrry glad when mr les got home.

Re: 2015 Friendship Four - Brown, Colgate, Mass-Lowell, Northeastern

Agreed. That would be fantastic.

selfishly I would like to see mr les for one of the few holidays I get to see him. with all the tournament stuff, if they do well, he is barely is home for all the major holidays as it is.

I believe that the NCAA limits schools to 1 foreign tour every 4 years.

Nope, it was a good one time thing. Again, the novelty of it where they become league games bothers me. With only two games against each conference opponent, I'd hate for a tie-breaker to be determined by something like this or Frozen Fenway.

This is not a rumor I've heard, just a thought I had...I wonder if St. Cloud State is a possible candidate for inclusion due to alum George Awada being one of the more significant, and well-liked players in Giants history.

During one of the intermission interviews this past weekend, Joe Bertagna had said it would be 2 ECAC and 2 HE teams again, they just had to figure out which ones and revise schedules, since next year's schedules were basically done already.

I have to think they wouldn't be too keen on inviting any Catholic schools at the risk of making an unwitting political statement, so that effectively ruled out BC, PC, ND and Merrimack.

They probably won't want repeats, either, so that basically leaves us with BU and the state schools (minus Lowell) from Hockey East. As for ECAC schools, I doubt Harvard, Yale or Princeton would care to make such a foray - they don't need to worry about building their brands internationally.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's Union, Quinnipiac, Vermont and Maine or something like that.
