2014 USA Olympic Hockey

so are we the home team or not? emrick said at least once that canada got the last change

We should be the home team. We're the higher seed.

Confirmed:

@chrismpeters: Value of Team USA finishing No. 2 overall seed, guaranteed home team unless they play Sweden in playoff round. Bylsma can match like he has.

I heard him say the US got last change, which would make sense as the #2 seed ahead of Canada. Earlier it seemed as if one of the other guys inferred Babcock was matching lines during a stoppage which he really can't do.

By the way, this goes back a bit but I was wholly unimpressed with how Babcock come off on the HBO series leading up the the new year game.

What he said was that Babock immediately changed on the fly to circumvent this. So he can match if he's willing to get the unfavorable matchup off the ice right away, which, of course, is not always possible.

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

All the US chances are from 40 feet out...All Canada's chances are right in front of the net. It's like a shooting gallery...not looking good.

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

No rebounds, no good chances, nothing for almost 60 solid minutes. Oh well, at least I don't have to get up at 7am to watch the Gold Medal game now! lol

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

If you listen close enough, you can hear a faint "who's your daddy" chant coming from the north.

From the start of the game, you could just feel that the US did not have enough. Canada is sooo deep, and sooo good defensively. Good game, but frustrating to watch if you were a US fan. Maybe next time eh?

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

Excellent game by both goalies. I noticed early on in the 1st that Price was giving up zero rebounds, and it never changed. And Team USA never found a way to get the offense going so that he'd be moving side to side a lot. Frustrating end (well, for the run for Gold) for the highest scoring team in the tournament.

I learned a lot about Bylsma in 24/7 two years before, I liked the guy a whole lot afterwards. Of course, he looks especially good next to Bruce Boudreau with barbeque sauce on his face. In an interview. In HD.

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

Can you believe the first time Kessel back checks in his career and he gets a hooking call? ;) :D

Never felt the US had a chance in this one. Canadiens were pretty much in control for 60:00.

I agree, Bylsma was impressive.

Go Sweden!

Canadians played really well defensively. Hats off to them. The US has to get stronger at the center position before 2018.

Maybe today's semifinals will put to rest the old myth that international-sized rinks lead to more scoring.

You can't really use the Olympics to draw conclusions in that regard. Teams like Canada, the US, Sweden, etc... are so strong defensively. There really aren't any weak links. Not that I don't think you have points to be made, but this isn't the way to make those points.

The US had little trouble putting the puck in the net until they ran into a Canadian team that played really, really well defensively.

eddie o agrees with it being a myth in that players have more time to make decisions with the puck

I thought they agreed that 200x100 (like Lake Whitt) was too wide, but that 85 is too narrow. Somewhere around 92 feet was agreed upon to be the "best" width. And just go with the eye test. What do YOU think watching these games? To me, it's the most exciting hockey in the world, period. Not just because there is more room to move, but because the flow is better because you can't risk taking a run at someone and getting way out of position. So more skating and less goonery. Now, you may not like that (a lot of people watch to see the goonery), but I do.

I don't disagree with him, but pointing to the amount of scoring in these Olympics isn't the best way to prove that. We're not looking at the difference in ice size in a vaccum.

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

hey i enjoy olympic hockey, but it's also not always as
exciting as it's portrayed.

Re: 2014 USA Olympic Hockey

Agreed. My only point is that I think it's a better game on the larger ice...even a 1-0 game is more exciting. I just don't like the congestion on the NHL sheet. But I know that sells tickets so we have to accept it...not to mention that the NHL is not going to take out three rows of their most expensive seats anyway. In every sport the athletes have gotten bigger and faster. The only sport that isn't really affected is baseball. Even football is suffering the consequences because of having to deal with the "concussion" factor due to the increased impact force. Basketball keeps trying to tweak the rules to create more space (3-point shot, can't stand under the hoop anymore on defense, moving players back one block on free throws). The only thing they haven't done (which makes the MOST sense) is raise the height of the rim. Hockey really needs to deal with this, I believe.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But to me, these games are the most compelling. It's the best players in the world uninhibited and unconstrained. Incredibly exciting.
