2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Carisa Zaban -- UNH Alumna -- To be inducted into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame

Here's an exerpt from her bio..."Once at the University of New Hampshire, Zaban began her illustrious career. Zaban led the team in scoring all four years that she competed, having to redshirt the 1997-98 season with a torn ACL. During her time the Wildcats won two Division 1 National Championships, placed runner-up twice, and had an overall record of 94-31-7. Her junior year she was named to the Second Team All-American and was a top ten finalist for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier award which is given to the top Division 1 female college hockey player. Zaban’s senior year would prove to be her finest as she broke a 19 year record for career points, set in the late 70’s. She finished with 263 career points in 129 games, amassing 118 goals (second on the all-time career list) and 145 assists (tied for first on the all-time career list). Zaban was a top three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier award, a First Team All-American and was 4th in the nation in overall points with 72. She was named to the All-New England Team and ECAC First Team, and still holds three of UNH’s top ten single-season marks in both assists and points."

At the risk of this thread magically disappearing again...

Friends of UNH Women’s Hockey may take action in support of McCloskey http://fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20140108/GJSPORTS_01/140109395

The "small" group of Friends Board members is actually the majority, with the dissenters amounting to two.

I guess I should fix my signature...? I don't know how Harvard or Minnesota will feel about that.

What I find most interesting is the "I never sought legal counsel, they came to me" part.

As a lot of people said on The Thread That Is No More, UNH's press release was terrible and gave completely the wrong impression. I hope they immediately issue the new release suggested by the lawyers; it's only fair.

I guess that is one of the perks of that IVY League education - his peer group has his back.

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

McCloskey should be battling back! The University handled this very inappropriately in many many ways. He wasn't given a fair chance to be heard. They acted quickly and irresponsibly and he likely could have been given a warning or probation period or maybe even a couple game suspension or something. Then they kick more sand in his face with a poorly written press release. Numerous players attempted to meet with the University President prior to Christmas holidays in the midst of exams and he refused. Many parents sent letters and received a general 'form letter' response back in return that was B.S.! A good man was chased down and executed!

That is equally interesting.

But even if it's true and that's how it happened, his mentioning that he never sought legal counsel and that they came to him is a move, an intelligent move, to attempt to claim the moral high ground in the dispute.

In singling out a particular educational background, I was not in any way implying that us "Bluebloods" don't stand up for each other too. In fact, we sure do!

If you read all the accompanying documents offered, it's obvious that McCloskey was/is the only one concerned about the team! As adults, we all know the challenges that we face in our lives, unfortunately this team now has to battle some very hard challenges on and off the ice.....if you thought these girls were special before, watch them now! Let's go Wildcats!!

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

I agree that McCloskey does have a solid case. But I'm worried that if this turns into a circus, will it become a major distraction to the team members?

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Seeing the "other side of the story" in great detail in today's Foster honestly made my day. It all pretty much falls into place with a lots of bits and pieces of information that have come my way since this whole incident unfolded. If there was ever any question that Scarano took this as an opportunity to get rid of Coach McCloskey due to the recent on-ice downturn of the program, I'm hoping this pretty much settles the issue for any of those who may have remained neutral, or even in Scarano's corner regarding Coach's dismissal.

And while Atty. Studen may technically not have an "Ivy" background professionally ... let there be no doubt she is at the top of her profession and a long-standing leading advocate in her field (employment law), and is working for a high-profile and highly reputable firm, and no doubt has her "pick of the litter" of cases that might come her way.

Good to see the Friends solidly behind Coach McCloskey in this debacle.

If "Blue Skies" isn't wetting his pants just yet, I guess that would just goes to prove the adage "ignorance is bliss".

I only wish they had a pay-per-view for his future deposition, I'd pay $$$$$ and enjoy watching the little git squirm. Not that it would ease the injustice already done to Coach, his family and his players. Karma, as they say, can be a b!tch ... :D :D :D

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

I am fortunate to be friends with several college coaches, both DI and DIII. Here, in part, is a common theme expressed
from one of those coaches' emails with me regarding the matter: "What sucks for Brian is having something like that on his record, even though us in the know, know better. I feel bad for him. I just don't understand what the school said about zero-tolerance. When did UNH become a jr. high school in a high crime area? No loyalty to a coach that has given you a lot of years, especially when what he did was what a million other coaches would have done in the same situation. Plus they are wearing gear, the kid can't get hurt. I had a coach grab my face mask and twist my head to the side, my neck was sore from it but I got the lesson....I didn't take away the man's ability to feed and shelter his family. I never thought it was out of line. You know what.....maybe teams should get rid of coaches altogether. Let the kids run themselves since we arent allowed to hold any of them accountable. One spoiled brat kid who never learns any lessons in life except to keep being a spoiled brat can ruin everything. Why does the admin cater these kids? why don't admins ever stick by their coaches?

I wrote an email to Scarano and, surprise, surprise never got a reply. All I asked was "where does a man go to get his reputation back?" Clearly I received no reply because Scarano hasn't a clue. I didn't even get a form letter, like the kind you get from your Congressman or Senator nowadays. Sad times in the kingdom for sure.

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Should be noted that Scarano renewed the Men's Basketball coach's contract before this season who is a fantastic 2-12. The coach proceeded to hire his son to his staff with Marty's approval. Marty has also let the Women's coach hire her husband. Major conflict of interests there.

The "small" group of Friends Board members is actually the majority, with the dissenters amounting to two.
For context, how many members are there on the board?

Not sure either would be considered a "conflict of interest", as much as it would appear to be two instances of potential nepotism.

But hey ho, no problem here, at least it didn't interrupt Blue Skies' ultra-busy power lunch schedule with the top brass ...

Re: Three Former Skaters Represent Team USA at 2014 Olympics

Best Wishes to the CATS on the 2nd Half of the season!! Big series to get started. Providence has already knocked some rust off so it should be a competitive weekend.

Best Wishes to Coaches Wood and Jones. Hearing great things, positive things, from inside the Whitt.

December 18, 2013
Wood and Jones Named Women's Ice Hockey Interim co-Head Coaches

"Wood, a 1994 graduate of Middlebury College, joined the New Hampshire women's ice hockey coaching staff in June 2010 as an associate head coach. The Wildcats have compiled a 45-64-11 overall record since he joined the program, and that includes 7-10-2 this season. Prior to coming to UNH, Wood was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota for two years and helped the Golden Gophers reach the Frozen Four in both 2009 and 2010. His other coaching experience includes Elmira College head coach; Wood guided the Soaring Eagles to a 49-5-3 record and a national championship both seasons ('02 and '03).

Jones, a four-year letter winner for the Wildcats who graduated in 2005, joined the UNH coaching staff as an assistant coach in summer 2006. In seven-plus years with Jones on the bench, the 'Cats have a 149-87-27 overall record with three Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles (2007-08-09) and four NCAA tournament appearances (2007-08-09-10). Prior to returning to her alma mater, Jones was an assistant coach at Colgate University for one season (2006)."

GO CATS!
