2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

Re: 2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

Russia-Canada 0-0 at the end of regulation.

EDIT: Canada scores three minutes into overtime to advance.

Pretty impressive performance by the Russian's to take Canada to OT. The US team takes on Czeck at 1:30 EST today, and the game will be streamed.
Just an incredible display of superior heart, determination and belief by the huge underdog Russia vs. the heavily favored and infinitely more talented adversary.

Looks like Taylar Cianfarano will be exciting addition for Wisconsin next year.

Final: USA 3, Czech Republic 1

Re: 2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

USA asserts themselves in pretty dominant fashion throughout the 3rd. Still pretty impressed with the Czech Republic. They bent but never really broke and played with heart as well.

Totally agree. But you could tell that 3rd goal was a back breaker for them. Still, they never quit.

She certainly seems to be the high-profile offensive player that was missing from the roster this season. The spark she brings, combined with the growth that will come from Sarah Nurse, should be real fun to watch.

And don't forget Ms. Pankowski....we're coming for you, you stinking rodents.

With the new arrivals, expected post Olympic year returns...upperclassmen, etc. the cupboard will not be entirely bare at Ridder. Should see some epic battles.

Meanwhile, congrats to the Czech Republic on taking the bronze medal with a 1-0 win over Russia. Has to be good for the game that more countries are having success.

Very encouraging that both the Czechs and Russians competed so well against the "Top 2" in this tournament. Might we be witnessing the start of a shift in power from the traditional Nos. 3 & 4 (Finland/Sweden) to these two?

Very poor 2nd period by the USA, giving up three goals and now down 0-3. Canada is playing with a ton of confidence and looks to have the game in hand....but there's still a full period for the U.S. to get back in it.

Down 5-1 late in third.

Re: 2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

Canada took a string of penalties in the third, giving the Americans plenty of opportunity to close the gap, but the U.S. could only muster one goal to make it 1-3. And with just a few minutes left the U.S. turned the puck over deep in their own zone and Canada took advantage to score the clincher, making it 4-1. Canada then added another one to make it a 5-1 final.

While not the USA's best effort by any means, on this day Canada was clearly the better team and very much deserved the win.

Re: 2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

What is going on with the Women's side of USA Hockey? Politics, lack of leadership and such? I have seen the u18 team, some of the players are going to ride pine with the schools they choose.

I think Alexi Yashin deserves a lot of credit for drawing attention to and trying to build the Russian women's program.

So the USA U-18's lose to Canada in the finals and now the players aren't good enough to play at the schools that recruited them? Wow! Are you some sort of expert or scout? Or are you a parent that has a kid that did not get chosen for this team? What players are you speeking of? That is a pretty big statement to make. This team did have a tough ending to a great tournament. But I don't think this one game means doom to their hockey futures! I think these players earned the right to be on this team -- the last game didn't go their way! Had they won this game would your comments be different?

Re: 2014 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships

RR- Of course Call it comment would be different and about half of the players shouldn't be on this team. They got hammered 5-1. A great tournament!! There are only 2 teams as of this moment. I won't say that the players will be riding the pine at college but I also don't think USA had the RIGHT 20 players on their squad either. The process that chooses this team is flawed and there is Regional issues that need to be taken care of. The Heads of USA hockey should be taken to task from the top down through the coaches staff. The fact that you even have D1 coaches (all Eastern except the video coach) is a problem as it looks like they use this team is a recruiting tool. Whether it is or isn't, is not the point, it is perspective of those not there. Have a competent D3 staff in place on the bench as they weren't getting any of those players anyways. Just looks better from the outside looking in.
