2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back II

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back II

My favorite weekend so far watching the Gopher Women’s Hockey team. What a great atmosphere at Ridder and performance by all the teams.

-Really happy for Megan Wolfe. She’s been coming on strong recently and the assist Friday and the goal Sunday-beautiful-maybe it was a coming out party!

-I thought Kate Schipper also has been playing better and better the second half of the year. Suddenly there are three members of that class to take some serious notice of (4 if we have to put Stecklein in that class!). I could see Schipper playing on a line with Pannek next year.

-Very happy for Kate Flug getting to dress with the team for the championship game and getting to go out on the ice for the celebration with her uniform on.

-I admit I had been a little down on Rachael Bona’s and Meghan Lorence’s play the last month or two, particularly in the Bemidji WCHA game. So Lorence scoring such a great goal and Bona flipping in the empty netter was a great thing to watch and such a fantastic way for them to cap their careers. I thought Bona and Lorence both played well in the Harvard game, but actually I thought pretty much everybody played well!

-Amanda Leveille-the first goal against Clarkson last year seemed to rattle her and the team a little bit and put a slight dent in her reputation. Fantastic performance this year. The early saves against Wisconsin were statement saves for the Gopher hockey team.

-The goals by Hannah Brandt were completely fitting goals for a superstar player showing up in a big series.

-Props to Maryanne Menefee for the pass to Brandt on Sunday!

So thank you to GWH 2014-15, and thanks to all you guys in advance for your indulgence in letting me air it out a little bit :D
Nicely crafted list; this post is a keeper. Congratulations on the championship!

P.S. Was going to send this message via rep, but must spread.

Random musing … Brandt scored a goal in each of the team's three NCAA games (just as she did on the run to a title as a freshman), and in each case, she wasn't allowed to remain on her skates to celebrate. Not that it dulled the exuberance of the celly in any of the three games. :)

Geeez...not going so well for the men eh
In one respect the Gopher men's team had one thing in common with BC's women's team: they played in a weak conference which did not adequately prepare them for the NCAA Tournament. But at least the BC women gave their opponent a game. :o

National runner-up last year with mostly the same team coming back. Such a disappointment to watch them most of the year. You really never knew what you would get. The team which had the talent to beat anyone or the disinterested squad that was on display yesterday.

I joked on the mens board earlier this year (and got toasted by guys with no sense of humor) that apparently there is a group on the team that hate Luchia so much that some even gave up starting their AHL careers in order to get Don fired. Don't know if they were successful yet but my guess is the guys that pay 5k for a seat license are not happy today. How that group so badly underperformed will always be a mystery. But this is the womens forum so lets speak of boys no more.

as anyone with the U of MN knows, over the last few years entrance requirements have gone up, they just can't get the quality players they could get in the past

Once more, many thanks to a stellar group of seniors who gave GWH and GWH fans so much throughout their careers. Congrats on achievements that I doubt anyone could have imagined possible...that will not be forgotten. Best of luck in life going forward.

Good article. And ditto on the 'best of luck' wishes.

So what is Kessel's prognosis for next year?

If anyone connected to the team knows, they haven't said anything. However, I would be beyond shocked and make it all the way to appalled if she played again. Once you've had concussion symptoms that last more than six months, you shouldn't be playing contact sports any longer.

The thought of her coming back would be great for her and the U, but I find it making me as a UW fan want to vomit. UM appears to stay way loaded and UW is losing 3 scorers. I don't know how the incoming classes stack up.

-Minnesota has a forward from Canada (Potomak) to correspond with UW's forward from Canada who I know was playing boys bantams pretty late in her career-I expect she should be good
-Minnesota has a forward from MN (Williamson)-who was MN Ms Hockey in 2015, but Wisconsin's Shaver was a Ms Hockey finalist, Shaver is 5' 10", could be great
-Minnesota also has a 'd' from Chicago Mission-Sophia Skarzynski-who looks good
-MN has a new 3rd team goaltender to replace Shyler
-MN also picked up a couple late additions a forward from Roseau MN, and a Defenseman from Stillwater MN, which makes me think it is still possible UW may have a late addition or two coming.

Wrong thread, but Timothy A, every time I see Sarah Nurse play she looks like her upside could take off like a rocket, and if Pankowski turns into a Decker or a Knight, everything could change just like that.

Williamson winning ms. Minnesota speaks for itself. But a bit on Potomak from the Aldergrove Star:

Fresh off helping her country win silver at the world U18 women's world hockey championships, Sarah Potomak is in camp with Canada's women's national team program. Potomak is one of two B.C. players among the 26 invitees, and the 17-year-old from Aldergrove is the youngest person in attendance. The next-youngest player is 21. At the U18 world championships — which were held in Buffalo, N.Y. — Canada lost to the United States in overtime. Potomak was tied for the tournament scoring lead with five goals and nine points in five games and led in plus/minus at +8. She was also named the top forward, most valuable player and was named to the all-star team.

She should fill in nicely.

I read that she was rated as the second best U18 in North America (don't remember who was rate #1) so I expect to be blown away :) Seriously though she seems to have a little ability.

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota Women's Hockey: The Maroon & Gold Strike Back II

does the above have anything to do with the below?

I can't imagine. Frost was never encouraging when people asked if he thought she would be back. If she were my kid I would tell her flat out she was never to play competitively again assuming she recovers from this event. At best hockey would be done in 15 years but your brain has to last for your whole life. I don't think they expect Amanda to play at the U & planned accordingly. I just hope her head is not permanently messed up.
