2014-2015 Minnesota State Mavericks women's hockey season

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota State Mavericks women's hockey season

I'm trying to remember, has there been a reason noted for the Maverick women using a different arena than the men?

All Seasons Arena is a great game for the amount of fans that the Mavericks draw. Playing a game in the same rink as the mens would almost seem like you are not playing in front of anyone, thus no home ice advantage. That's my opinion.

Boy, that's the truth. We have been going to St. Cloud, Duluth and Bemidji for 12-13 years & Mankato for the last 6-8. It is sad to sit in those first 3 barns with maybe 100 fans total (though everyone is doing better now the early days were really bad a lot of times). As much as I hate 2 Seasons I'm afraid that empty room feel will deflate the atmosphere downtown. The women deserve more fans.

Limited locker rooms at the Verizon Center and limited ice times available. I believe the men still use All Seasons to practice during the week.

Next year (at some point), both teams will have new locker rooms, break rooms and work out facilities etc. Opposing teams will have new locker rooms as well (I believe opposing teams use 2 in All Seasons). MSU also becomes the primary tenant next year and has ice available all week and weekends.

All Seasons is a great place to watch a game because of the proximity to the rink, but both MSU and opposing teams will prefer playing at Verizon because of the intangibles available to them.

Well, I wasn't intending to stoke the debate about "atmosphere" once again...but was wondering more about the Maverick women vs. Maverick men at opposite ends of the spectrum thing, not unlike Union most recently. Then, whether or not facilities could be a factor. I know associated depth of the different talent pools is probably the larger factor. I like watching games at All Seasons...but it's far from comfortable. That's a fans perspective not terribly pertinent to the potential recruit. Basically, I wonder if the different facilities is part of the equation when considering any reasons for such disparity of success on the ice between the two Maverick ice hockey programs. I figured the arena availability was likely the reason...just wondered if there were any others. I'll assume Verizon has more, and more diverse bookings than Sanford, AMSIOL...Herb Brooks etc.

Verizon seating capacity is sub 5000 so that's not really a large arena...or not dissimilar to venues of a few other WCHA women's programs. Also, there doesn't seem to be much of a home ice advantage...to be lost. Just thinking out loud.

After the Maverick women move into the Verizon Center, the OSU Ice Rink will officially be the worst facility in the WCHA.

We sat next the the dad of the EP girl headed to OSU next year (also the one going to UND) I asked him if the facilities made it a hard sell and he said they viewed them as a positive. "You come here and you own it" was the way he put it. I don't know if he was trying to put on a brave face or what but I suppose for certain people the 'spartan' facilities could be something. But then he is also the guy who said the EP girls could beat any of the NCAA champs from 5-10 years ago so his grasp of reality might be a bit shaky.

Even if Boyle meant DIII champs he would be wrong.

I guess Tonka and Edina may deserve NCAA bids then. That's quite a fantasy he has there.

Having had a son and a daughter that played I am familiar with "parent goggles" and am fairly forgiving of them even though I never fell under any illusions. They both seemed like nice guys & I hope both the kids do well in school while never seriously competing for the WCHA championship ;)

Re: 2014-2015 Minnesota State Mavericks women's hockey season

Congrats to Nicole Schammel for her second WCHA Rookie of the Week award! (http://www.wcha.com/women/pres1415/201502/feb2wpw.php) She and the team played quite well last night and earned the win against St. Cloud. The last two weekends have shown progress after getting stomped by UMD on Jan 23rd. That may have been the low point of the year - the next day they came out as a much different, more intense team. Despite the 0-4 score, it was a fun, competitive game.

Last night we saw the return of freshman Hannah Davidson, #28, with a strong night. She is playing well and is #2 on the team in points. She and Rogan look good on the same line, along with Schammel. We need more scoring, so hopefully these three will continue to click. I like Coleman's growing comfort with the college game. Johansson is a strong player, and has refined her game to a degree. She needs to use her size and speed rather than just being physical. Keys and Bustad are the strongest defensive pair and are playing well together. Wittchow and Fiegert are showing improvement at D, too.

The team is showing improvement and will hopefully have a solid couple of weeks remaining.

Tough season, and I'm sure the girls are probably glad it's over. They showed flashes of talent at times throughout the season, and ironically, the last game against the Gophers might have been their most complete game of the year. Hopefully the team will hit the weight room this summer, eat well, and spend time skating against other talented players. It's always a long 7 months until the next season starts :).

Thanks L268 for the MSU-Mankato presence on the forum. Great to hear the last game may have been their best. Outshooting the Gophers 15-3 in the first period is insane! I seem to recall they played Wisconsin earlier this year with only 15 skaters, 12 of which were freshman. That's also insane! The 12 freshman means there is reason to believe that improvement is on the way.

It was a fun game, KTDC :) - I, too, think improvement will happen next year.

Congratulations go to team members Anna Fiegert (soph), Erin Krichiver (sr), and Kathleen Rogan (sr) for being named as WCHA Scholar Athletes for 2014-15. And, an extra shout out to Kathleen for becoming the ninth four-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete honoree in the 10-year history of the award. Job well done, ladies!

Any thoughts on who the new coach might be?
