2014-15 Rosters

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

With 5 goaltenders and the assistant baseball coach running the show. Wow. I don't think they realize what's going to happen next.
A roster filled with all but 1 Tier III junior players. It's going to be a looonnnnggggg season. I expect to see a few RIT/Neumann scores.

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

24 games. 17 against NCAA competition. I honestly think they're looking at 0-17. And yes, I do see those two games at Finlandia there.

I don't think they realize what they've signed up for. I really don't. I'm glad they're not playing SNC (varsity) or Adrian.

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

Okay, even I don't have a clue as to what you're trying to spell here.
Not sure of it is a word but when I played with the FDNY Travel A team we went to Sweden to play hockey in the World Police Fire Olympics, and it was a inside joke, the swedish people tried to speak english and we would just look at them at say " shubirgins" shrug our shoulders and walk away........couldnt understand a word they said..:D,and it got to be pretty funny.:D

UGh maybe thats why they have 40 on the roster, because come mid season half will be shell shocked or in the bar drinking the season away. Illinois,I have not looked at their schedule but I would imagine it will involve a ton of travel, which will not help things

Agreed.

However, their roster does look slightly better than the IL H.S. hockey all-star team I feared.

I honestly think that playing them would be detrimental to top level programs like SNC, Adrian, and St. Thomas (who I believe are in fact playing Aurora.) Not so much because of the chance of being upset, or even the negative effect it could have on their pair-wise rankings, but because it could be a weekend of ingraining some really bad habits.

Travel won't be too bad for them. They are very close to LF, MSOE, and Concordia, WI. Closer than most to Adrian, and a reasonable distance from the WIAC teams (minus Superior), and most of the MIAC. +- 4hrs to SNC, Lawrence, and Marian. Their location will not be part of their initial issues...

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

That's going to be a mess. Hello, 20 game conference schedule, with two of those games against that.

You're starting to sound like U-Wisconsin....maybe they should just give them a "scrimmage"! Not every program has the start up like Adrian. Not every program takes the winning attitude like Adrian did. Everyone wants to point out 24-0 RIT / Neumann score, but just a few years later Neumann was raising a banner because they challenged themselves. Same thing with Fredonia in the late 80s and 90s. Fredonia got beat 25-0 to Plattsburgh then a few years later was beating Plattsburgh and going to the DIII Championships. The best thing teams like SNC and Adrian could do IS play Aurora. UWS, MSOE, UWRF, STU, Stout...they're trying. I don't know much about the school, but maybe they don't have the resources "yet" to put forth a DIII team, but if you shy away from the big boys who will ever want to come to your school? Take some lumps, take some hits. The real question will come with how they respond. Like us east coasters had said with Lebanon Valley, they had the chance to make a successful team but chose not to. Step 1 is creating a team. If they can't offer a decent recruiting package (we won't go into the whole Adrian thing and the mysterious article that claimed they would be going DI) it will be hard for them to pick up some higher end talent. Looks like its about $30,000 a year for school, with an average of $6,000 in institutional aid. That's for in-state and out of state students. They've pulled in some NAHL kids, D3 Kids, and yes some from the SIJHL which has sent kids on to DI schools and ECHL Semi Pro. Let's see what happens. Give it some time.

I believe athletics at Aurora are well funded. I know not every program starts out like Adrian, but there is a middle ground (see Naz.) I believe there is a substantial difference between hiring George Roll and hiring the assistant baseball coach, but who knows, I could be wrong.

I wish Aurora nothing but the best, and I think they know there will be some growing pains. You should ask someone associated with that Platty team that hung 25 on Fredonia if there was any benefit at all to the Cardinals in playing that game.

I am of the opinion that a season at the D3 level prior to playing SNC or Adrian will be beneficial to them, and when they do in fact play those schools I expect the games to be open to the public... ;)

For the record, everyone always talks about the Platty 25-0 game and the RIT 24-0 game, but some of you east coasters may not know that in 1991 SNC opened their season with a 21-1 loss at Point. I know there was no benefit from that game to either of those schools that season. Perhaps it served as motivation to future SNC teams once Coghlin came over from Point, but that's about it.

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

I looked at some of the records for male sports @ Aurora, over the past five years:
Football record: 19 -- 28.
Basketball: 86 - 52.
Baseball: 130 - 81.
Seems to indicated that they are able to recruit and compete in these sports....could extend to possible success in hockey...time frame (TBD)..

While he is not Roll, let's not make it sound like he hasn't stepped foot on ice before. He does have previous hockey coaching experience, all be it not at the college level. He surely has a diverse roster. 40 players from 15 different states/countries. I don't have the time but Im going to go out on a limb here and say he is not the only DIII hockey coach to never coach/play DIII hockey. At your bigger schools its a requirement, but is there a financial reason there? Or does Aurora think they have a diamond in the rough? Don't forget, we have tennis coaches and swimming coaches on our DIII Ice Hockey Tournament Selection Committee trying to understand hockey and pick the best teams....

Actually Emery has openly talked about past "point night" games versus the "old" SUNYAC (which is exactly my point). He has openly said it was sometimes a nice break and teams were able to work on different lineups/combinations. On the flip side, some teams don't want to shy away from the big boys and its a good test of where they are/are not, of course only when open to the public.

Having said that, there were a couple teams who when down by a touchdown and a field goal would resort to goonish tactics, and then there were teams who would play as if it were a 3-2 game. That falls back on the coach and hopefully he has them playing like a 3-2 game.

Should they be thrown to the Dogs and err Knights the first year? No. The point is, even if they are getting beat 10-1 at the Cornerstone, playing SNC is a chance these kids never would have got. That alone can/could be a draw to bring in some more talent down the road IF the coaching staff can play their cards right. THAT is what playing teams like Adrian/SNC will do to you, IF the school keeps progressing. We ridiculed Adrian for years for never scheduling a top 10 school on their schedule, and Adrian always responded with "no one will play us". If Aurora comes a calling, I hope Adrian picks up the phone is what I am saying. Seeing how Aurora is already playing more respectable teams in their opening season the Adrian did the first 3 years combined. MIAC Regular Season Champion St.Thomas, WIAC Regular Season Champion UWRF (in RF x2), CSS 3rd behind Adrian/SNC in NCHA.

The biggest thing with Aurora is not what happens on the ice in 2014-2015, it's what happens off the ice and moving forward into 2015-2016 and beyond. With no conference and no shot at an NCAA Championship this year, if you were a Junior player would you go there? I go back to the recruiting already this year. 40 players, 15 different states/countries, 60% of their team at 6'0 or bigger with several 200lbs+, not a bunch of small 18 year old high schoolers.........to me it seems like they've taken a serious approach for at least putting together a DIII team. How good they are is still to be seen.

Apples and Oranges. Do they and or will they offer some form of Financial Aid to foreign players? Cortland State is always among the tops in DIII athletics, yet haven't made it to their own conference championship game, ever.

Re: 2014-15 Rosters

Adrian and SNC will have to pick up the phone next year. Aurora will be an NCHA team next fall. I just hope it's not a repeat of CUW, circa 2007 or so.
