2013 U18 Women's World Championships

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

I almost overlooked the fact that the 5th/6th place game was played today, with Finland defeating Hungary, 3-1. Emma Nuutinen had the opening goal and assisted on the other two. In net, Kiira Laine made 29 saves for the win. Shots on goal were 30 to 30. Box score

Bronze Medal Game...

Sweden 4, Czech Republic 0 -- Sweden's Linnea Hedin and Isabell Palm scored in the first 3:38 of the game, chasing Czech goaltender Barbora Dvorakova. The Czechs kept the pressure on and outshot the Sweden 43-36, but Swedish goaltender Minatsu Murase kept the Czechs off the scoreboard. Sweden added goals by Malin Hogland and Michelle Lowenheim (who assisted on both of the first two goals) to make it 4-0. Box score

Gold Medal Game -- IN PROGRESS...

USA 1, Canada 0, end of the 1st period - The Americans allowed Canada the first shot on goal... then took the next 20 themselves. Canadian goaltender Kimberly Newell stopped 19 of them, but the U.S. got a power-play goal from Jennifer Ryan with 1:56 left in the period to take a 1-0 lead.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

Now at the end of the 2nd period, still USA 1, Canada 0 - Play was much more even (if the shots are any indication), with the Canadians having a 10-9 shot advantage in the second period. Jennifer Ryan's first-period power-play goal remains the difference so far. The U.S. is 1-for-5 on the power play; Canada is 0-for-3 so far and on their fourth power play, with 33 seconds remaining on the U.S. penalty that will carry over into the third period.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

Oh my... Canada pulls Newell with a minute left, and Catherine Dubois ties the game with an extra-attacker goal with 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Now 1-1 going to overtime. Third period shots were 13-10 for Canada, but the U.S. still has the 39-24 advantage for the game.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

FINAL: CANADA 2, USA 1 IN OT - Karly Heffernan scores 58 seconds into overtime to give the Canadians the gold medal. Hanna Bunton gets the assist. It was the first Canadian shot on goal of the extra session; the US also had a shot on goal. Final shots for the game were 40-25 USA.

Kimberly Newell finished the game with 39 saves for the win, while Sidney Peters made 23 saves in a losing effort for the USA.

Bummer to be 13 seconds away from pitching a shutout for the whole tournament, only to give up two goals in 1:11 to be forced to settle for silver. Congrats to Canada for fighting till the end and coming away with gold.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

at least the canadian women know how to win gold. cant say the same for the men right now.

On this side of the border we were hoping that the U.S. women could make it a gold medal sweep. Too bad...they came about as close as possible.

P.S. From the boxscore it would appear that Fetter's decision to call a time-out with 25 seconds left was a good call.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

Hey, maybe losing the way they did, will just give these girls extra incentive to win other kinds of Titles, like College Hockey Natl Titles?!

Tough break. Been there. Let a goal in right inbetween my legs in the final moments of a Championship Game of a pretty big tournament. It was double elimination, something like 20-24 teams total, and I moved into goal after we lost our opening round game. Won every game after that, including the first game of the final, but since that was the other teams first loss, we had to play them again, and had a 0-0 tie going with less than 30 seconds remaining, and I let them put one in right between my legs. Very disappointing. And that was some high school tournament, not an international Gold Medal game. Hopefully she and the rest of her teammates can shake it off and move on to their next challenge.

Re: 2013 U18 Women's World Championships

Have some of the other teams improved? (besides USA/ CAN) I looked at the score sheets and often times USA scored as many goals as they gave up shots. I hope the answer is yes thus perhaps producing a better Olympics. Did anyone see some games?

Reviving this thread....US pre-worlds Camp Roster:

http://usahockey.cachefly.net/Media/WNTCampRoster.pdf

Three questions/comments:

- Never seen her play, but is Jincy Dunne really this good to be on the US National Team when she is 15? Understand the concept of encouraging younger players, but on the surface this looks like a stretch (or a Harvard recruit) when you have to exclude another player?

- Who else thinks it is weird to see a hometown in Ontario on a US National Team roster (and yes I know the story)?

- Do we think that one of the BC girls (Carpenter or Skarupa) will latch on to the final team?

- Dunne. She is good. She held her own last international competition when injury bug hit team. I don't think she will make the team if everyone is healthy, but I think it is good for her to be there.

- Babstock. If it happens, main stream media will eat it up.

Not as uncommon as you might think. While this is different, work for an American based corporation here in Canada. Several of my colleagues are American and have lived here for years, in some case 20 plus years, and their children have a Canadian based home town. Typically born here, but they also have US citizenship. Most have dual citizenship. It is a pain tax wise, as they have to file for taxes in both countries. (one of my American Colleagues complains about that on a regular basis).
