2013 NFL Season. Tebow on the Brady Bunch(en)? Goodell will to all men!

I could have sworn it was the TV timeouts that slow the game to a crawl.

Score some points? Follow it up with a TV timeout.
Kickoff following points scored? Follow it up with a TV timeout.
Kickoff to start the game? Follow it up with a TV timeout.
Punt the ball? Follow it up with a TV timeout.
Someone stubs a toe? Follow it up with a TV timeout.

I've advocated make them snap the ball from the 25 for the extra point.

Interesting. That would certainly give teams more options when there is an offensive penalty on the Extra Point (nothing like a 57 yard field goal for 1 point) rather than just enforcing it on the kickoff.

I've always thought it would be interesting to force teams to go for 2 (similar to College triple OT and after). Of course, I have always liked the idea of allowing for a 4 point field goal from a certain distance and longer (probably 50-55+ yards). It just doesn't seem right to me that a 64 yard field goal is given the same point value as a 19 yard field goal. However, it could lead to the odd result of a team down 4 trying to go for the win, getting the ball to the 5 yard line, only to poop out and take several delay of games (or just one really long snap) to try a long 4-point field goal. Moreover, the NFL doesn't give extra points for especially long TDs over the 1 yard variety. Consequently, it will likely (should?) never happen.

That being said, I would be all for the NFL trying some of these different rules out during the preseason.

That's a lot of typing just to say "Ignore this post, but let's try some kooky stuff when the game outcomes don't matter."

I saw some background on this on ESPN last night.

Sherman was interviewed, and candidly was pretty contrite. He admitted he may have gone too far. But he did have these interesting comments.

First, he said there is a history with Crabtree. Last spring or summer they were apparently at a charity event and Crabtree started in on Sherman, taunting him, telling him he was going to light him up the next time they play, and trash talking Sherman's skills as a defensive back. Sherman said it almost resulted in a fight between the two men.

Sherman also says he was "mic'd up" during Sunday's game, and that after the play, when we see Sherman go over and pat Crabtree on the backside, and start talking to him in what looks like some clear trash talking, that what he actually did is pat him on the backside, and tell Crabtree "nice game." That's when Crabtree pushed him in the facemask.

Finally, he apparently told the Seattle coaches that he was going to trash Crabtree in the post-game presser, and their response -- Just don't say anything bad about Denver.

If that's all true, that definitely changes my thoughts on the matter.

I'm all for the NFL treating the PAT like it was treated in NFL BLITZ... It is something that has become automatic and is just a waste of time...

I guess you're unfamiliar with trying out things to see if they work before implementing them in more important situations.

With all TD's being reviewed some PAT's are delayed but no question the biggest drag to the pace of the game is the ridiculous amount of commercial breaks.

TV timeouts are definitely the biggest drain on the pace of the game. But, they also make the league billions of dollars, so they are not going anywhere.

I say make all PAT's a live play. Blocked PAT's can be returned by the defense for 2 points.

Subscribed because graduated FG points and elimination of the male nipple of the NFL (extra points) are inevitable

Re: 2013 NFL Season. Tebow on the Brady Bunch(en)? Goodell will to all men!

If we're going to change the value of a field goal in the NFL, shouldn't it be worth more as they get shorter, showing that the team got closer to a touchdown? It's stupid either way but this isn't fantasy football...

How about adding some ice skating type requirements: (some combination of the following)

must fake at least one punt or FG per game
must try one reverse or HB pass play per game
someone other than the QB must take 5 snaps per game
must play XX% of your defensive snaps with 7 DB's on the field
must run one fumblerooski or hook and lateral every game
must have a NT in your offensive backfield inside the opponent's 5
must throw one pass to said NT during the season
must go for it on 4th down at least 30% of the time, excluding fake punts
Must run 1 trick kickoff return every 4 games

Bonus rules
At any time during the game the ref can declare "two minute drill" and the offense only has two minutes to score or they give up the ball
You can try a human pyramid 1 time per year to block a kick (you better hope that isn't the time the other guy has to run a fake)
If you run out the end of the first half by taking a knee, you must play the first series of the next half with 10 men
Injured players must miss rest of series (cuts down on faked injuries that slow game down)
Cannot call time out to ice kicker, 60 Minutes is waiting
Drop kick is worth 2 on PAT
Any FG's hitting the cross-bar or up-right and going in are worth 4 points
Any scoring play in which more than 3 offensive players (excluding center) touch the ball is worth automatic 8 points, PAT still applies

To me that would really change the risk:reward factor. Why ever consider going for it on 4th and goal from the 1 if a field goal was almost as valuable and has nearly no risk? On the other hand, ask Nick Saban about the risk of kicking a long field goal. I think 55 yds is about the right distance to go from 3 to 4 points. At that distance the trajectory is changed enough that blocks are more likely, coming up short and having something that is returnable is more of a possibility, and a plain old miss leaves the other team in pretty good field position.

Which is why every field goal should be 3 points, you shouldn't reward a team for failing to make the field goal attempt a more reasonable distance. The risk/reward is up to the coach to decide, kicking a long field goal only really has the potential for return at the end of a half, otherwise the reward for the return team doesn't outweigh the risk of a turnover/worst field position than taking it at the spot of the miss.

Re: 2013 NFL Season. Tebow on the Brady Bunch(en)? Goodell will to all men!

Here are some graphs I put together when we were discussing this topic on GPL:

Average value of a field goal attempt:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-...5jggceR9zo/s1200/Field%20Goal%20Histogram.png

Field goal percentages vs field position:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-..._I3xW-Fw/s1266/Field%20Goal%20Percentages.png

Average value of the final play of a drive AND average field goal value vs. field position:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-...0/Average%20Value%20of%20Field%20Position.png

The last graph should interest everyone. Basically anything within the redzone we should see teams going for it more often than they currently are. Inside the 10, there really isn't any good reason to kick a FG unless you have a situation where a FG wins or ties it late in the game.

They already have that sport. It's called Calvinball.
