2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

For those um...more experienced...Brewers fans out there; do you remember times when you were this excited to watch a team? The first time I remember being truly excited for a team was the year of CC, but then again, most of my life the Brewers were not very successful. In fact, I remember coming to a game in middle school where Shawn Green hit 4 homers and 19 total bases (for those who don't know, he did not play for the Brewers ;) ). I ask because I have probably watched 60-70% of games this year which is a lot for me. For many reasons, I love watching this team play. I find it is easy with sports to get caught in the moment and forget how exciting previous seasons, playoff runs, etc were, so I was wondering if some of you old folk can hop in your way-back machine and re-live some other great teams to watch.

I was at that game too, 8th grade class field trip

not as experienced as some, since I was too young to actually remember 1982. 1992 was a good year, and even though it came down to the wire, I never got the feeling they'd really make the playoffs (and they didn't). But - my memory may be a bit hazy of that year. I also didn't expect they would spend the next 13 years losing, so it didn't seem like a huge letdown at the time. ;)

That late July-August run in 2011 is the only time I can remember honestly feeliing like I expected them to win. They'd fall behind, and I'd think, oh well, they'll come back and win. And they almost always did. Had never happened before and hasn't happened since. I feel like this year has been more luck and a little less talent, compared to that year.

<a href="http://grantland.com/the-triangle/milwaukee-brewers-jonathan-lucroy-shadow-mvp/">Article about Lucroy from Grantland.</a>

My favorite part (referencing Lucroy's All-Star commercial):
It was funny and playful, and it calls attention to the great season Lucroy is having. I love everything about it, including how offended St. Louis manager Mike Matheny and various Cardinal fans got. Lucroy inspired something that was decried as classless by the Best Fans in Baseball and greeted with multiple paragraphs of “Gee, I dunno” from Mike Matheny, in which he literally used the phrase “Cardinal Way.” That’s how I know Lucroy is bringing joy and happiness to the world.

I joke, but Cardinals fans should be upset. Not because they’ve been somehow aggrieved by a promotional video for the All-Star Game or because the Brewers have a clever marketing department. They should be upset because the Brewers’ catcher is better than theirs, and people outside of Wisconsin are starting to notice.

:D

btw, <a href="http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/nl-all-star-voting-coming-down-to-the-wire?ymd=20140701&content_id=82355810&vkey=news_mlb">latest ASG voting</a>.

Brewers fans have been good at stuffing their ballots to get Reynolds, Braun and Davis as high as they are. ;) Nice to see Gomez close to overtaking McCutchen. I would love to see Luc with a late surge, but I don't think it's going to happen.

CATCHER
1. Yadier Molina, Cardinals: 3,100,939
2. Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers: 2,636,640
3. Buster Posey, Giants: 1,985,621

FIRST BASE
1. Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks: 2,582,955
2. Mark Reynolds, Brewers: 1,430,395
3. Adrian Gonzalez, Dodgers: 1,418,148

THIRD BASE
1. Aramis Ramirez, Brewers: 1,790,777
2. David Wright, Mets: 1,555,717

SHORTSTOP
1. Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies: 3,997,477
2. Jean Segura, Brewers: 1,729,054
3. Brandon Crawford, Giants: 1,263,689

OUTFIELD
1. Andrew McCutchen, Pirates: 3,173,810
2. Carlos Gomez, Brewers: 3,169,748
3. Yasiel Puig, Dodgers: 3,001,907
4. Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins: 2,681,019
5. Ryan Braun, Brewers: 2,509,770
6. Charlie Blackmon, Rockies: 1,859,729
7. Khris Davis, Brewers: 1,457,407

I think Gomez, Lucroy and K-Rod are locks. Lohse maybe, but there's some great starters this season. Will Smith has been great but no **** stats.

edit: I can't say s-e-x-y???? really??

Khris Davis is day-to-day with a shoulder strain.

Melvin says no trade talks right now. I think they could use a bullpen guy if they can get a good deal, with Henderson and Thornburg unknowns. I'm trying very hard to have faith in the Wang situation, but down the stretch, I think it's going to be hard to basically be an effective guy short in the bullpen. He better turn out to be really, really good once he gets his chance to pitch regularly.

Peralta and Happ this morning for an early getaway day.

I was thinking about the bullpen too and realized that they only have to make it through August. September call-ups should let them bring up all the extra arms up they want from the minors.

I haven't been this excited for an All Star Vote since Corey Hart got in as the extra guy. I can barely wait until Sunday.

And the rest of July... and the race is getting closer. It feels like the entire division is in second place (except the Cubs, obviously ;)) There's been signs of wear and tear and I think having an extra body that can actually pitch would be a huge right now. But Doug Melvin has rarely steered us wrong, so I am trying to have faith.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

After all the pomp and circumstance, four Brewers are All-Stars (at least that's what the digital billboards showed last night driving through). Ramirez, Gomez, Lucroy, and K-Rod.

Also seeing the NL Central race tightening, but not sure what external help would "fix" what ails the Brewers. There isn't a glaring problem(s) like in years past.

Yep. Can't point to one thing and say "x has been terrible". It changes game-by-game. All these little injuries certainly don't help (but they're much better than big injuries). They have to be careful not to overlook the Phillies this week going into the STL series. I'm sure nobody thought the Brewers were going to run away with it, but I'm worried too.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Brewers are just gripping their bats too tight (except for Maldonado and Gomez) and trying too hard to score baserunners. At my last count, they left about 86 runners in scoring position tonight through eight innings. They'll get on, and then nothing. Gomez breaks his bat hitting into a double play; or strikeouts; or base running gaffs to nab the lead runner wipes out the bases for the Brewers all night.

Just need to calm down and play small ball.

Oh, and the starting pitchers need to stop digging themselves a hole in the first inning. :p:mad: It wasn't fun to watch at the beginning of the season, it's still not fun to watch.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Gomez back to leadoff tonight, and Ramirez back to cleanup. Braun is out.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Second place by the break? Suprised it took this long

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

That was brutal. At least I got to see TG start on my birthday. What's wrong with Will Smith lately?

Wang to the DL, Nelson called up, Estrada to bullpen.

Brewers signed 16-year old Dominican shortstop Gilbert Lara. Projected to be third baseman or outfielder. I can't link to the article, but he sounds extremely promising.... as much as a 16 year old can be.

Supposed to be top five Latin player available at this point. Some say he's the best hitter in this class.

Re: 2013 Milwaukee Brewers - Cheaters, Underachievers and Disappointments Oh My!

Matchups for what is sure to be an exciting ;) series vs the Cardinals:

Tonight: Yo vs. Joe Kelly
Saturday: Jimmy Nelson vs. Wainwright
Sunday: Peralta vs. Carlos Martinez

In related division news, Yadier is out 8-12 weeks and Brandon Phillips is out 6-8 weeks.
and Luc will start the ASG.

This weekend will be pretty telling. The Brewers need a rebound, and a Cardinals lineup missing Molina helps.

They need to quit trying for bases empty grand slams, and the pitching needs to get their heads on straight. They were winning games with the "small ball" method early in the season. Need to get back to that.

Agree...everyone seems to be swinging for the fences, trying too hard, etc.
