2013 Great Lakes Invitational, One like no other as part of the Winter Festival

That's correct. The problems that the Joe has were there from its inception: crowded aisles, not enough restroom facilities (especially for women) , poor pressbox and suites.

Don't get me started on that "pressbox." It was literally an afterthought. Take out the top two rows and make them a pressbox.

The pressbox is an afterthought everywhere. Ford Field, the Van Andel and many college rinks aren't much better.

I don't know why you would say such a thing. The one time I sat in the pressbox at the Joe I had a great view of half the ice. There was a wall next to me blocking the other half.

Good! The media gets to view every game for free anyway so they shouldn't get the best seats in the house. I like how at the X they are at the way top.

I think the pressbox at the X is pretty nice though...

Why no love? The media should get in for free. They're working and not paid to cheer. Give them lousy seats and they'll write a lousy story ... gotta be able to see everything that's going on, right?

It's tough for me to feel bad for people who get into every sporting event for free. I don't feel bad for bloggers who write a crappy blog just to get into the games for free.

Well they can at Munn, no one is there anyway...

Tech is a good team.
Western is remembering who they are.
state is a joke, but they have a dent defense along with good (for now) goal-tending.
Michigan is unlike any other Michigan team in the past. They are responsible defensively (most of the time) but they lack offensive punch. The minor offensive firepower that we have will be gone to World Juniors (as is typical).

I actually like Tech this year to reclaim their tourny....

They played Michigan very tough in Yost this year even though they were swept.

Yep, I said it long ago and now it looks even more probable. Michigan, who is not the Michigan of old as it has very low scoring, looks like they'll be without one of their leading scorers. Compher is rumored to have broken his foot. Looks like Tech will actually repeat this year, unless Western decides to show up (then it will be close)...

Last I saw both Motte and Copp will be playing World Juniors and Compher is not going due to injury (I hadn't been able to find details on what the injury is, so I'll take UMICH's rumor).

With that much offensive power gone, I don't like Michigan's chances.

All I know is he injured is foot/ankle blocking a shot in practice...

That's all that I have documented evidence on as well (pretty sure that is where you heard it as well) but yea, a little bird told me he broke it, not a serious break but still a break nonetheless (take it for what it's worth).

BTW, it looks like Michigan will drop to somewhere between 7-9 after the GLI (I'm assuming) and that's ok. That's where we have always felt that this team has belong anyway.

I still think it's anyone's tournament. It'll probably come down to hot goaltending and special teams over a two-game series (said no one, ever ;))

Last year, Tech's story was Pheonix [sic] Copley and the penalty kill. Do they again rise to the occasion, or do they get outplayed this year?

Also of note, last year at this time, Tech went without Blake Pietila who was busy winning gold at WJC. This season, Pietila has struggled both on the scoresheet and in his ability to be a disciplined leader (or lack thereof). So his presence in the tournament this year is a big question mark for the Huskies.

Michigan has been the best or nearly the best offensive team I have ever seen, when they want to be.If you don't have your game absolutely together they can run away from you real fast.
I think, even with the losses, they will be extremely tough.

Thank you but they are nothing compared to years prior. Then add in the fact that our two leading scorers on team (Copp and Compher) won't be at the GLI plus the #6 scorer (Motte) will not be at the GLI either and you can almost be guaranteed to win if you score two goals against us. Copp and Motte will be at World Juniors and Compher injured himself (WOTS is broken foot) in World Juniors practice.

I know what you are talking about as we almost had an embarrassment of riches before (ranging from Morrison to Legg to Tambellini to Hensick to Porter to Hagelin- and I know that I'm leaving a lot of people out).

I was at the first game between Michigan and Tech and watched the second on TV. You guys are good, no more Tragic Number for you. Mel can coach, guess who he learned it from? Your guys won't roll-over...

Re: 2013 Great Lakes Invitational, One like no other as part of the Winter Festival

Saw the rink on Monday night. Western Ontario was playing Windsor as I was headed to the Baltimore Ravens game (or Lions game, as you Michiganders might call it).

It looked cold and reconfirmed my belief that hockey does not belong in a baseball stadium.
