Thoughts? Predictions?

Will the NHL come calling more this year due to the compressed season?

I guess I'd be more concerned this year than other years, especially if my team had talented juniors with NHL-ready frames.

Leave our juniors alone!

I don't see them calling just because it is a shortened season. But, I bet 1/2 the Gophers are gone after the season is over. Haula, BJugs, Budish, Schmidt, are absolutely gone and every calls me crazy, but I bet Wilcox leaves for the worthless Lightning - since they have nothing in the form of a competent Goalie.

I do have to call you crazy on that one, freshman goalies don't bolt to the NHL.

They normally do not, but look at the crap Tampa Bay has now in both the NHL and AHL - I think Twocox is better than anything they currently have.

Re: 2013 Early Departures

The NHL work stoppage kept more players in college than would have otherwise stayed. It has made for a great season, like in the olden days. I expect the Gophers will be ravaged but I hope they win a NC beforehand.

Michigan is the exception. Good thing they have the #1 recruiting class coming in.

Off the top of my head I can only think of one example... Rick DiPetro... and I'm not even sure if he went straight to the NHL or if he did a year in the minors.

I realize that this is so long ago as to be hardly relevant, but both Curtis Joseph and Mike Richter only played one year of college before moving on.

I believe in Wilcox! He should definitely go for it! :)

Did they go straight to the NHL?

Go pull out more short curlies!

Derek Gustafson (ya know, the one who WON the 4OT game ;)) also jumped after his freshman year. Got a couple starts for the Wild that year, but mostly stayed in the minors and fizzled out.

Don't know I'd go that far. You have the optimism of Scooby. The only guarenteed departure, I would say is Bjugstad. Clearly has an NHL body and is wanted. Schmidt's stock is high, so I would also say its likely. Haula, while likely, I wouldn't say is certain, and pray to the hockey parises every night that he thinks Hobey is a really cool piece of hardware he'd like to try to get. Budish has reasons to expect him to leave, has an NHL body, but I hold out hope for his return. And I am hoping the development needs of goalies means we see Wilcox back. If a few of these guys return, and some of the frosh perform to expectation, they could still have a very good team next year.

And I can't help but think about guys like Vanek and Leopold who really didn't need to stay, but still did, or guys like Klatt who say he would rather have played another year than left (college>nhl for fun factor), and keep that same thread of hope that some will return.

But this is really a discussion for post season. Apparently the WI fan thinks his team's season is already over.

Two outstanding goaltenders!

Bjugstad - 100% gone
Budish - 99% gone
Schmidt - 75% gone
Haula - 50% gone

I think it's pretty safe to assume Bjugstad and Budish are gone. Few people will disagree with that. Schmidt is a free agent, so if he gets a good offer (and odds are he will), he's probably gone too. Hopefully he signs with the Wild. Haula isn't as sure of a thing. The Wild have a pretty deep forward group in Houston, and the way he has been developing here, they may be patient with him. It's probably up to what Haula wants to do. Play his final season here, or in Houston.

Good news is, the Gophers have one of the best recruiting classes in recent memory coming in next year. Cammarata and Kloos are #1 and #2 in the USHL in scoring (both scoring at close to a 2 pt/game clip). Add in Geurtler who is Top 20 in the USHL in scoring, Hudson Fasching who is a big power forward that will replace some of the size we're going to lose with Bjugstad and Budish's departures, and everyone forgets about Connor Reilly (who was expected to make a big impact as a freshman this year before getting hurt and being out for the season).

And on defense we already have a very deep group, and will be adding two excellent players in Bischoff and Brodzinski. Neither will be forced to jump into big roles too quickly because of our depth at defense.

I expect the Gophers will also see a few other unexpected departures, maybe an Alt for example, but with the depth at defense and the outstanding talent coming in, I don't think we'll see the Gophers fall off too sharply.

1. I don't forget Conner! (You said "everyone", unless you are implying I am "no one".)
2. Bischoff will play a year of Juniors unless there are more early departures at D.
3. While next year's class certainly looks very strong, I'd rather see some returning players we can count on (Haula, Condon, Budish ?) than need to have the freshman produce on a high level consistently. It's hard to beat a core of upperclassmen to provide consistency if you really want a team that has a good chance.

Hahaha... Maybe I should have said "I" keep forgetting Connor :p;)

Yeah, should have prefaced Bischoff coming in with whether or not we lose a guy like Alt. either way, he won't be forced into a large role quickly because of our depth. We can afford to bring him along slowly if he is brought in.

I think Condon will be back, but wouldn't be shocked if he leaves. Really feel like Haula is 50/50. Either way, I think guys like Boyd, Isackson, and Ambroz take another step. I think we have finally reached a level of stability where guys step and replace the roles of guys who depart. A lot of that can be contributed, in my opinion, to guys not being asked to do too much too quickly and allowed to learn and develop.
