So, according to the NCAA, a full decade of lack of institutional control at Miami isn't as bad as the fact that two players at USC took gifts from agents and a women's tennis player made some "unauthorized phone calls." I see.

The NCAA screwed the pooch in the investigation.

Basically. You can say Miami did all those things, but what evidence do you really have besides one total scumbag and some improperly procured evidence? That may be enough for some people, but the NCAA would have been laughed out of a court if Miami decided to sue, so the NCAA took what they could get and punted.

Miami got **** lucky that the PSU scandal happened when it did, and allowed the NCAA to take their eyes off of them.

So PSU caused the NCAA to magically lose the non-existent hard evidence they supposedly had against Miami?

The answer shown by the SEC in all this is to say fark you, prove it.

I agree. OSU needs to win their bowl game. The Capital One, Outback, and Gator Bowls are huge for the Big Ten this year as well. They could definitely have teams capable of winning some close games between average teams. The Pac-12 is far and away the best conference this year, IMHO. Alabama is awesome. Missouri is good, but look at how many teams are beating one another; ESPN likes to call it parity, I call it a bunch of average to slightly above average teams battling it out. Hell, Oregon absolutely destroyed a fairly mediocre Tennessee team, and then South Carolina loses to them.

I think the NCAA let Miami off very easy because they botched the investigation so much that even though there was still a lot of solid evidence, they were gunshy on this particular case. Of course the gradually growing ineptness of the NCAA over the years could also play into this. Of course you gotta figure this will further embolden a lot of cheaters who see Miami getting away with all sorts of stuff and getting a slap on the wrist.

People have said that for years. You really want Bigtime College Football to straighten up and fly right? You start getting trigger happy with the Death Penalty, or stuff that really hits the program where it lives, like taking away home games or TV airtime.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. TV time? That's cutting into the revenue stream. We can't have that.

Hey, we're only talking about a program that the NCAA says lost institutional control for a single, measly decade. Just one little decade here, not a lifetime or something. No need to financially impact them by losing TV team or something harsh.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

The problem I see with all of this is that Miami clearly violated the rules for a lengthy period of time, just as Penn State did. The difference? The entire country was upset about the PSU scandal, while a portion of the college football world cares about the U violations. The NCAA had to act "all mighty and powerful" by strictly handing out sanctions and fines to PSU because of the pressure of the national media outlets everywhere. Outside of ESPN, no one gives a **** about this elsewhere.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

It was brought up during the Penn State debacle that a TV ban isn't really an option anymore... Times have changed with this part of the deal and a ban just doesn't work in today's world...

Main Point - Banning a team from TV also penalizes the teams that they play... When the PSU talk came up, I had to wonder why I had to miss out on Illinois being on tv when we played PSU... Why should we have to lose the exposure and marketing opportunity for their mistakes? If it's a non-conference game, I get that it's a choice... But with the conference schedule, there is no option...

You also lower revenues for the entire conference... Again, a PSU example: So ABC can't pick a PSU game for the Saturday afternoon game... They can go with OSU, or Michigan... But what happens when OSU plays PSU? Now you lose two of your biggest draws... You have to go with a 2nd tier team like an Illinois, Iowa, or N'Western... That can mean a big chunk of ratings...

TV bans just don't work in today's world where fans expect coverage of EVERY game in one form or another...

All of your points are just explanations of why TV bans WOULD work....if the NCAA had the stones to impose them. TV revenue is too high to be feasible? I say: to whom much is given, much is expected.

Agreed. The discussion again just shows how totally money runs the NCAA and college athletics.
