What a strange one. Andy Iles gives up 5 goals on 22 shots?
http://www.ithacajournal.com/articl...-snaps-Red-s-nine-game-hockey-unbeaten-streak
"Andy Iles made 17 saves in two-plus periods before being pulled for freshman Mitch Gillam after the Raiders’ fifth goal. Gillam made eight saves."
Not taking any credit away from Colgate, or its ability to score goals. They beat us 5-2 and I have no doubt they can score lots but on only 22 shots against one of the ECAC's most respected goalies?
Is something wrong with this picture? (not, of course, if you are a Colgate fan)

I saw Colgate play Yale, UMass (twice) and Vermont all at Starr.
What a difference a new year makes:
They are 7-7 at home but 4-0 at Starr since 1/1/2014.
They are 6-1-1 in January.
They are scoring 3.5/gpg and giving up 2.2/gpg since 1/1/2014 which is a better spread than our 2.9/gpg and 2.0/gpg

Big weekend for us. Hope we are at full strength. Going to need to dig deep.

Iles wasn't great, but this wasn't a case of a goalie giving up soft ones and inflating the opponent's score. Colgate deserved all their goals -- particularly as the game wore on they were in good position and had great intensity. The small number of shots is deceiving. 'Gate set up a number of high pressure flurries where they barely missed the net, had shots blocked or deflected right out front, etc.

They also really played well off their crowd enthusiasm. Starr actually seems to give them a home boost, and that will be a factor this weekend. Having seen both teams I have no doubt Union is better, but I think we're talking about the difference between a classic 2-seed and a 4-seed, where the latter's home ice makes it a 50/50 crapshoot (i.e., exactly the same case in the Union-Cornell game).

This is definitely an intriguing weekend.

Very interesting comments from Coach. Sounds like he was able to see another side of his team.

See http://www.uscho.com/2014/02/12/does-harvard-have-another-post-beanpot-surge-upcoming/ See "Union restored" at the bottom

Many very good coaches are able to adopt a "system" in their sport that they are comfortable with and has worked successfully for them in their career. They then recruit players that fit the requirements of that system. Some coaches can go beyond that and will tailor a "system" that matches the strengths of their team and players and their potential.

I wonder if Cornell and Colgate might not see something different from us this weekend. ;) :)

Union head coach Rick Bennett said today that Cole Ikkala (lower-body) remains "day-to-day" but has practiced on a "limited basis" so far this week. Ikkala, an alternate captain, was hurt blocking a shot at St. Lawrence on Jan. 31 and has missed three straight games.

Some other thoughts from before practice today (audio links)

Don't hate me because I'm sailing the BVIs but someone has to do it! Staying grounded by updating on the thread when available and last weekend made a great trip even greater. Amazing weekend and 3-1 record while RB was on his vacation was just about all that could be hoped for. Life is good.

Far, far from a rum infused broad reach down the Drake Channel is the Death Zone through which summiteers of Everest must endure the Final Push. The Dutchmen have just reached it. Hopefully it is their opposition whose obits we will be reading in the coming weeks.

3 out of 4 possible points is a must. Small room for error vs. Q-pac, but 3 points this weekend will start to take a good bit of air out of their balloon. And of course it will help kill any thoughts Cornell or Colgate have about making a run.

Question - Is winning the regular season title enough to nail the last #1 seed? Or do we need to make conference tourney finals too?

I should've been more specific, you will get the Brown and Yale games against Union in two weekends so it ends up being roughly $5 per game for all three.

Got it. Thanks.

I'm actually planning to go to those games.

I hope Carr is ok, he took a hard hit and hasn't returned since. If anybody has more info on his injury, please share.

Another great win, holding my breathe for Carr. The only goal Cornell scored was on a break away due to referee interference.

Solid win tonight, worried about Carr though. Tapp said it was day to day in the post-game interview.

I am very glad for the win and I like the way we played in stretches, but if Cornell put the puck better on net this would of been a different outcome. I know some of their errant shooting is due to our sticks and pressure, but I still think they were snake bit. I do like our composure and how we usually know our assignments but at times again, I was worried.
