2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

Re: 2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

I note with interest all the "Cornell pickers" against UNO on Friday night despite the fact that Cornell has yet to play a game this year other than one exhibition game and UNO has played 4 games (a home and a road series) besides an exhibition game. Plus, the series this weekend is in Omaha. If Cornell prevails on Friday night I'll be more concerned than I already am about the Mavs.
So because one team has played games already this season, they can't lose?? Or because the other team hasn't played a game they can't win??? I guess Cornell - and the rest of the Ivies - are in for a long, winless season since all of their opponents have already played. Maybe all those posters noticed that UNO lost to Bentley at home, a team that is rarely thought much of. A team that is 1-4.

I just think that'll be at least something of a factor on Friday night. Bentley and UNO had both played one exhibition game when they squared off. Not an apples-to-apples comparison of the Cornell/UNO situation at all.

4 games played versus no games played is significant in my book in the case of Cornell vs. UNO.

Note that I held open the door that UNO might lose, anyway, on Friday. They have not looked good at all, IMHO.

Because that same situation really affected Big Red last year when they opened with 3 wins. The first two against a CC team with 4 games under their belt. They were 3-1, with their only loss coming to UMass-Lowell. And we all know how well Lowell did last year. Looking at the past 5 years, Cornell is more likely to start without a loss in their first three than they are to open with a single loss.

Re: 2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

We still have quite a few people who haven't picked yet this week, so just a reminder that your picks need to be in by 7:00pm Eastern TONIGHT!!

Also, I'm not one to nitpick somebody's predictions, but I do find it interesting is that at least part of Red Cows logic stems from the fact that Omaha is at home tonight, yet Red Cows then proceeds to pick the road team in 8 of the 10 games. I just found that interesting. Either way, the point in this thread is to have fun, so good luck to the Mavs this week Red Cows, and good luck with the rest of your picks.

You're forgetting the very important fact that Cornell doesn't suck nearly as much as UNO does...

Re: 2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

UNO pretty much sucks, that is the main reason people are picking Cornell. Who the hell loses to Bentley at home...

Re: 2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

1) All picks must be in by the drop of the puck of the FIRST game in the bunch. This week, that is FRIDAY at 7:00pm Eastern! (The 4pm Brown-Yale matchup is not an "away" game by either team)
2) No late picks will be allowed. No exceptions. This means that if you post your picks on Friday at 7:10pm Eastern, you will not receive credit for your picks
Did they change the time of the Providence game? You might have a conundrum now, having said that the cutoff is 7:00 and Providence is already on the board. Maybe you just post the first rule as merely the first sentence, and avoid mistakes or schedule changes.

I'm not sure if they changed the time, or if USCHO just had it wrong. When I picked the games for the week, it had a 7:00pm puck drop.

In general, the rule is the first sentence, and the following is explanation of the rule. Given that it really didn't make a difference (the only poster to put predictions in following the actual drop of the puck of the first game was gochiefs, and gochiefs picked Miami, who lost), I'll follow the reasonable reliance theory and allow gochiefs picks to count for this week.

I like to post the games for people to pick as early as I can to allow as many posters to participate as possible. When I do that, I'm picking games based on USCHO's scoreboard on a Sunday or Monday. Apparently, things change as far as game times and the like between then and Friday. Perhaps to avoid this particular issue in the future I'll consider changing the rule to enforce a Noon Eastern deadline for predictions.

As for Friday's games, congrats to both PcFriars13 and SanTropez for going 4-0-1 to grab the early lead for this week. Also, there were 7 road winners on Friday. Of the 29 posters to predict this week, only 9 are over .500 heading into Saturday's picks, while 11 are below .500 (meaning 9 are right at .500). Good luck to everyone tonight and tomorrow, and may the best poster win!

Re: 2013-2014: NCAA Weekly Pick'em

Glad to see that you're counting gochiefs picks, though he should probably get a 2 point penalty for picking a team that was down 2-0 at the time he posted his picks. ;)
