2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I can't wait for the realignment so we can get the Wild - Hawks rivalry going

It'll take a while. They have no reason to give a hell about the Wild.

I agree that I'm looking forward to a Hawks/Wild rivalry. In my heyday of actually getting to go to a lot of Hawks games (82-95), the North Stars became my most hated rival.

Grew up in the Chicago area (to Wisconsin native parents - Hawks were the only Chicago team we didn't hate) and we shared season tickets with some other families through the 80s.

From 89-93, I was living in LaCrosse (college) and made the trek to the Met Center at least 20 times to see those two play. Grew to HATE the North Stars (this is where the seeds of my all-encompassing hatred for all things Minnesota sports were planted & then later watered and fertilized by the Vikings and Gophers - before that, barely knew you guys existed) especially after they beat us when we had won the President's Trophy (92?) - I was in attendance.

I digress. I don't know if other Hawks fans back home felt the way I did about the North Stars. At least for a few years they must have.

Certainly the Red Wings have been enemy #1 for some time now down there lately although Vancouver has gotten quite close - but of course EVERYONE hates Vancouver.

As any rivalry, what it will take is both teams competing directly against each other for the same thing. If they go to the 4 conference alignment where to get to the Stanley Cup semis you must win your conference playoffs, it could develop rather quickly.

Our hatred of Vancouver developed after 3 or so consecutive years of meeting in the playoffs and both being amongst the best teams in the west. Oh yeah, and because most of their players and coach and ALL of their fans are complete d-bags.

With the talent that the Wild has assembled and what the Hawks already have, we could be seeing a lot of each other in those conference playoffs. Things could get heated within the next few years. Let's hope so!

It'd be a lot more fun if that ******* Dollar Bill Wirt$ were still running that pile of crap into the ground.

It would be a lot more fun if Norman came back with the moving vans and took your team to Houston. :p

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

So I sit down today to watch Saturday's Leafs - Habs opener of the 60th season of HNIC (I was kinda busy on Saturday). Not only is it not in HD, it's not even wide screen.
Really NHL, is this the best you can do?

That would be CBC's decision, would it not?

All of my Center Ice broadcasts are in Low-D.

The CBC most likely put it out in HD, don't you think? Was probably the local cable that put it on a standard channel although I can't understand why it would be in 4:3.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Comcast in Chicago only dedicates two channels to HD games for Center Ice. And ZERO games based in Canada are broadcast in HD.

I think it has more to do with the broadcast rights that Center Ice has to re-transmit the CBC/TSN/Bell/Rogers/whatever broadcast from Canada into the United States.

I wish there was a TV provider like SiriusXM radio that had the rights to broadcast in both the US and Canada. I guess the closest thing we can get is NHL Gamecenter though.

I still don't understand blackout rules for sports...We don't get Fox Sports North, but we're still blacked out of all Wild games here in Des Moines. And don't get me started on baseball, where we could be blacked out of the entire NL and AL Central on a given night since 6 teams claim Iowa as part of their home market. Never mind that at most we'd get Comcast and Fox Sports Midwest.

Well, my friend who lives 2 miles from me and just outside of Madison to the south, gets Comcast Chicago as part of his sports tier. I get blacked out.

This means that I have to pay for Center Ice to watch the Blackhawks where he gets their games (on Comcast anyway) for free.

Who knows?

I'm hoping for the day when you can simply subscribe to an individual team's games. I don't really watch much of Center Ice at all outside of the Hawks. Used to when the first round or two of the playoffs were on there, but now all of those games are on regular TV.

CBC put it up on the bird in HD. NHL Network has HNIC in HD but for some reason most games out of Canada are in SD on Center Ice.
This is the first I've seen in 4:3. it's like watching our games on a laptop.

I've spoken to Directv about it in past years and they always say it's the NHL that decides.

I'm hoping tonight's Leafs - Sabres game is HD

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

The blackout rules for MLB/NHL/etc. are quite archaic and need to be re-evaluated. But, there are too many hands in the cookie jar, and no one wants a new cookie jar. I was quite surprised a few years back when I saw what markets are considered "home" territory. The local cable-co's would scream bloody murder because their revenue stream would be cut with subscribers cutting cable or just adding the specialty packages for sports (ie: basic cable and buying CenterIce).

I would love for DirecTV or Dish Network to try this. Pay an extra $10 a month for each Regional Sportsnet channel you want. I'd sign up for three right away: FS-Wisconsin, FS-Detroit, and SportSouth. (Brewers, Redwings, Braves)

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I posted this on the HiDef forum after the first month of the season back in 2009 and I don't think the situation has changed in the interim

Number of games involving Canadian teams broadcast on the Center Ice channels: 37

Number of games with 2 Canadian teams: 12

Number of games with 2 Canadian teams shown in HD: 0

Number of games with US vs Canadian teams: 25

Number of games with US vs Canadian teams with both feeds: 10

Number of games with US vs Canadian teams with both feeds in HD: 0

Number of games with US vs Canadian teams with single feed in HD: 4

Probably would be on MSG, though I'm not sure if RJ is well enough to announce; supposedly he didn't do yesterday's game (I was at the *** Centre, so I don't know).

Directv has both broadcasts on the program guide, question is well the Toronto feed be in HD?

The Sabres one probably will. The Buffalo Snooze confirmed that RJ won't call it. Of course I don't blame you for wanting to hear your hometown announcers.

The solution is simple really, watch it on your tube TV and sit real close. :p

Geez I might as well. Turn to the HD channel and see a message that service will resume as soon as technical difficulties are resolved. So I'm watching in beautiful 4:3 SD

Thank you Directv engineers for getting the HD signal back. Now really beautiful 16:9 high def!

Well there's a first. Ceremonial puck dropped by Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station, with assists to Potvin, Tucker, Sittler and the ageless Johnny Bower. :)

Very cool, even in SD
