2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

The Soviets should've won that series. In fact, I kind of wish that they had swept the **** thing, although with the Canadians resorting to goonery and Bobby Clarke breaking Kharlamov's ankle just to eke out a win, you do have to wonder how dirty they would've gotten if they went 0-8 instead.

Keep in mind, these are the same people who will to this day defend what Todd Bertuzzi did to Steve Moore.

Espo remains unapologetic to this day, and I don't blame him.

"We were going to do whatever it took to win. It didn't matter," Esposito said of series, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of its conclusion Friday.

"People nowadays are ridiculing us -- I had some people send me mail saying, 'I'm so ashamed you're Canadians because you didn't play fair and were dirty.' Those people don't understand. We did whatever we had to do.

"It was f---ing war."

Long forgotten are the antics, such as Bobby Clarke's slash to Valery Karlamov's ankle, Boris Mikhailov kicking Gary Bergman's shins to the point his leg was bleeding and the throat-slashing gestures from Bergman and Esposito towards Mikhailov.

At the time, though, it went to a whole new level -- a battle for hockey supremacy also had overtones of being a clash of ideology, capitalism versus communism.

"It was going both ways. I'm not going to say we were the best guys in the world. We weren't," Esposito said. "We played mean and we played dirty, and I'm not going to deny that one iota. But the truth is, we did what we had to do.

"People need to understand, we had to win. And whatever it took to win, we were going to do it."

Them thinking of it as war instead of hockey is what deserves ridicule. But, whatever. They won because they cheated a lot in a vicious fashion. :)

The time and the place. The time and the place.

In 1972 the Soviets were THE bad guys. I betcha if you asked most of the Warsaw Pact countries, they hated the Soviets, too. I doubt there was much gnashing and weeping of teeth in Prague.

Okay, but they were playing HOCKEY.

One thing that us fans over here don't understand is the nationalism that is in Europe and, to some respects, in Canada. When countries played each other, it was, and still is, a big deal. Now go back to 1968 when Russia snuffed out the "westernization" of Czechoslovakia. When the Czechs won the Worlds in 1972 @ home, the country went nuts - especially since they beat the USSR for the gold.

Our guys didn't cheat, they were just better than the Sovs at dishing out the nasty stuff. ;) Neither side could be accused of being choir boys.

As Joe says -- time and place.

Yes...the US certainly understood it well enough eight years later. Lake Placid anyone? Although that was not the time and place for "fighting dirty," and that team could easily have lost. That's why it's the Miracle. But the sentiment was there. As I understand it, anyway, not having been born yet...

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

Let's not paint Canadians as cheats. Clarke was showing the Scumbag Flyer way of cheating. :D

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again... "If enslavement of the human race came down to the Flyers taking on Satan's minions, I'd gladly embrace enslavement."

IMO, this is the most important part. Some would yell "Tu Quoque!" or some such smug Latin nonsense, but when it comes to hockey, marking dirty opponents for retribution is expected, and the standards were different then. Today, laying them out with a big hit, or winning a fight should suffice. Back then, it was an 'eye for an eye' mentality.

Also this :D

I remember watching some old NFL clips and there was a player from the 50s/60s or so, and he berating the current players. (paraphrased): "Now, you got players talking with each other before the game, and they're on opposite sides! That's just wrong. They are your enemy. You are at war. None of that happened when I was playing. That guy opposite you on the field? He wanted to destroy you, and you wanted to destroy him."

Now, there's some machismo in there, sure, but back in the day....it was a whole different attitude about sports. Add in politics/nationalism? Hoo-boy.

Bud Grant has said the exact same thing on KFAN before during interviews.

Looks like the negotiations are making some slow progress, but it also appears the owners are pretty set on reducing total compensation. If the cap comes down by 10 percent, I wonder what implications that has.

Re: 2012-13 NHL Thread. Fehr Thee Well??

I have to wonder what NBC thinks of all this.... It seems that the NBC Sports Net. seems to be hitched to the NHL and the lockout can not be good for business...

I'm sure that the uncertainty of what will happen does not please NBC, but I think that it's not going to be to much of an issue until the football season starts to wrap up. As long as the Winter classic is not canceled I don't see any long term ramifications for the NHL-NBC relationship.

I'd agree that is the likely scenario, as does the Great One.

“I think that in 2004 we were changing the whole landscape,” Gretzky told an audience during a personal finance conference on Monday. “Ownership wanted to have some sort of revenue sharing, and once we came to the revenue sharing, the hard part — from my point of view — seems to be out of the way.

“Now it’s a question of working out the number that both sides think is fair.”

Gretzky is guessing — and hoping — that an agreeable middle ground can be found in the next three months.

“I believe in my heart, maybe because I’m such a big hockey fan, that they will be playing by Jan. 1,” he said.

In other news, ESPN is going to air hockey.

The Kontinental Hockey League has reached an agreement with the US sports TV channel ESPN to broadcast games in the 2012/2013 KHL Championship. The games will be shown on the ESPN3 channel in the United States, Territories of the United States, and also in Great Britain.
