2012-13 ECAC Women's Hockey Thread

Re: 2012-13 ECAC Women's Hockey Thread

Let me preface by stating that I Know nothing about this situation, but not following your reasoning for not going to school. As far as I know, a player does not lose a year of eligibility by registering at the school and not playing. Most players that red-shirt a year, still go to class. As a matter of fact, that is often a great way to get your course load in, so you have less of a load on your plate in your remaining years of eligibility. In the mean time wish both players well in their recovery. Injuries are a teams/players worst enemy.
I've been told that is not how it works at Harvard. If you don't want to lose a year, you have to leave school. Harvard has a more restrictive clock than the NCAA clock. Again, just what I've been told by multiple sources, and the actions of these players seems to confirm that.

Historically Harvards granted medical hardship waivers to extend eligibility...at least in other sports.

Well, I don't know exact details of why, but I do know they aren't registered in school, which is why they are off the roster list. Their injuries were both pretty serious and so maybe they needed time away from school to heal properly. I am sure Pucci at least was hopeful to be potentially centralized next year.

You are correct that registering for school does not impact ones athletic eligibility. However, redshirting to gain an extra year of play means that you need to stay in school another year to take advantage of the opportunity (5th year). In non-Ivy DI schools, it would be possible to start a Masters for example, or take more courses to get a double major.

However, you cannot continue to play sports at an Ivy League school after you have met requirements for undergraduate graduation, which is to be completed in 8 semesters of academic registration. If they had continued to go to school while unable to play, they would have been on track to graduate on schedule and thus unable to still play for an Ivy in the 5th year.

Good info. You learn something new everyday. For Canucks in this situation, they could then play two more years in Canada.

ARM posted an article stating both the players suffered season-ending injuries and pakid seems to confirm. Let's assume their facts are right and the players aren't part of the other thing.

There could be about 55 thousand other reasons contributing to the decision as well........

A few years back UNH gained the services of Amy McLaughlin, who played at Brown, but red shirted a year due to injury. She earned her Master's in Durham and made a trip the Frozen Four whole she was here. Not a bad deal for anyone.

I heard the same information from a number of different sources. Season ending injuries before the season evenn started.

This is exactly what I was thinking, as a likely on-track-to-graduate senior, either not interested or not eligible. class of 2015?

I wasn't assuming (or insinuating) anything. I was stating a fact...

First time poster here...

Just popped in to ask if anyone knows what, exactly, are Gedman and Pucci's injuries? Must be pretty serious to knock them both out for the year.

Check yer rep.

Not sure if a first time poster would understand that concept.

Thanks! I am not a lazy person, but I am succinct at work, and figured if that instruction didn't work out, I'd provide more later!

Lol thanks for telling me :) Wouldn't of known otherwise.

****, that is a tough break for Harvard. Especially sad about Pucci. I hope she recovers in time for the Olympics next year. She's at least got a shot at making that roster.

Yes! Still in CT....a slave to the wards (you'll know what I mean). Ugh. But not for much longer! Hope all is going well with the oldest, would love to hear more (starting to think about the future?). Rep incoming...

Re: 2012-13 ECAC Women's Hockey Thread

If motivation means anything, Jo Pucci should have an outstanding senior season based on this poll. She deserves to be on this team.

Josephine is one of my favorite women’s college players. I have watched her every season from age 12. She is everything a coach would want -- a tireless worker, coachable, humble and physically gifted. Her improvement has been steady and dramatic. She is a terrific player and an even better person. Is Josephine stronger than the two defenders listed? No.

The two primary reasons Cornell has appeared in the last three Frozen Fours: Fortino and Rougeau. Fortino is a three-time first-team All American, and Rougeau is a three-time second-team All American. And this isn’t the 21st century award-inflated All American variety. The accolades represent one of the two best defenders in the NCAA and one of the top four. The completeness of these two women’s games is breathtaking. Watch a tape of tonight’s match-up against BU and perhaps the best forward in women’s hockey.

And Cornell's 3rd best defenseman, "A" Alyssa Gagliardi is maybe the most under-rated D in NCAA. She was #1 star of the game yesterday deservedly so. Gags blocked 8 shots. The entire BU team blocked 7. (Cornell blocked 25 as a team which is why they won the game!). Blocked shots + speed = LOTS of short handed and odd man opportunities = 2 short handed goals in the same PK!

And on that D corps -- Jr, Haleigh Cudmore and Fr Kelly Murray aren't too bad either. And hopefully soon freshman Cassandra Poudrier will be back in the line up!!
