2011 Philadelphia Phillies - If you liked H2O, you're gonna love R2C2

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Phillies - If you liked H2O, you're gonna love R2C2

So, I'm convinced that this is the best regular season Phillies team I have ever seen. In addition, I've seen only a few examples of any team being better, at least in the regular season. Seattle was great in 2001, and had to contend with a team down the coast in Oakland that was almost as good. The Yankees likewise in 1998, especially since they proved it in October, although there were really no other great AL teams that season. A few early 20th century teams come to mind as well, but I tend to discount a little of what happened in baseball before a fuller integration became the norm by the 1950s. I also discount a lot of what happened in the pre-AL era.

But this Phils team just wins. They come back. They hit with 2 outs (whether or not the get an assist from a lousy umpire), they play the best 9 man defense in baseball -- and have for the last 4 years now, and they even find a way to beat the team with the best home record in the majors despite playing without 3 of their biggest cogs. We all know how hard it is to start any kind of a losing streak with the kind of rotation they have. And the bullpen ERA is among the NLs best.

It looks like the biggest issue they face is who will be their 4th starter in the post season, Oswalt or Worley. My guess is Manuel and Dubee will opt with playoff experience and go with Oswalt. But they have made some moves here and there over the last few years that have gone against the conventional wisdom, so we'll have to wait and see. Perhaps it will be determined by each of the last 2 or 3 starts by the two.

Something I thought maybe we'd see a little more is pulling back on some of the innings the starters have thrown. As someone who is absolutely loving the old-school approach to starting pitching a number of teams are showing (most notably of course, the Phils), I find it strange I am thinking this. But when Hamels towed the rubber in the 9th, I was surprised. Especially since the Phils broadcasters thought he may have come out for a PH in the top of the 8th anyway. But here we are in the middle of September, and there have been few hints that any of the starters are fatigued. Hamels had the one little hick-up, but Lee, Halladay, and Worley have been horses. I think part of it is they have the mind set of not letting up on the throttle. I agree with that approach. We've seen too many examples of 100 win teams not making the Series, let alone winning it all. I think coasting in September hurts. But then again, the 1993 Braves didn't see the World Series, and that 104 win team didn't even know they made the playoffs until 6:00 on the final Sunday of that season, thanks to the 103 win Giants staying right on them until the final day.

We could actually see a playoff spot tied up in a couple of days (I think the magic number for no worse than the second best 2nd place finish is 4) so the final couple of weeks will be a wait and see game. Here's to 11 wins in October!

Agree with everything you said ND. There was a time earlier this year when if they got down 1-0 like they did last night I almost would have given up hope. After Hamels gave up the home run and then retired the side, I just knew it was only a matter of time. And sure enough they put up 6 in the next inning and coast the rest of the way. The starters invariably hold the opposition to 2 or less runs almost every start and the offense, which will run hot and cold, just seems to be able to turn it on and have a big inning when they need one. I love the additions of Pence, Mayberry and Martinez. And somehow RAJ needs to find a way to keep Wilson Valdez on this team. That guy has been nothing short of brilliant since he joined them last year. He's done everything asked of him, including pitch, never complains and just comes up big time after time. What I love about this team is the lack of egos, especially since Werth departed. Just a bunch of guys that love playing and want to win.

I have a soft spot for Valdez. I always like a truly effective utility guy, and he's been that and more. He's been above average wherever in the field they use him, and actually has shown quite the glove more than a few times at 2nd, 3rd, or short. He's going to hit lefty's or righty's just the same (about .250) and as he showed two nights ago, can lay down the perfect bunt, something else I admire. Not to mention his awesome 0.00 ERA!

Funny what you said about Werth. My ex hated him. Just could not stand him for some reason. Even after she discovered her favorite player, Victorino, was tighter with Werth than anyone else on the team. Now everytime I see him with the Nats the only thing I can say is "enjoy last place." Of course now that the Marlins decided to turn it off a month earlier than normal, he'll probably not finish in last. So I guess it'll have to be "enjoy your 90 losses," which will be about 30 more than his old team should end up with. Washington will end up really regretting that FA signing.

I really felt all year last season that Werth couldn't have cared less how the team did, as long as he got his money. I really felt like he was a cancer in the club house, although no-one on the Phils would ever say so. I just look at the way the team played this year, even before the arrival of Pence, and it was a totally different feel. I could be wrong, but it was just an impression I got. Besides that, the guy absolutely killed us last year when we needed a big hit. I think at one point near the end of the season he was like 1 for 35 with RISP and 2 out's. Other than 2008, I never really got all the hype about the guy.

OK, I am officially worried now. This team is sleepwalking through the final games of the season, not respecting what needs to be done. Manuel has held off with the "closed door meeting" so far, but enough is enough.

The pitching has been OK, but to go through a stretch of impotent offense like this (and it isn't just during the losing streak) reminds me of exactly how they looked last year against SF in the NLCS. There are not enough at-bats where guys are battling. A lot of easy outs.

Leaders on this team had better step up. Maybe the allure of the best ever season in Phils history meant little to them, and yeah, I'd rather see a World Series title than 102 wins, but you don't just "turn it on" against major league pitching. I really hope they know what they're doing, because for a full week now, it certainly doesn't.
