Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

The NHL/NHLPA is looking into Nashville's qualifying offers on O'Reilly, Halischuk, Spaling and Kostitsyn for possibly missing the deadline Chicago style.
The NHL/NHLPA just doesn't want to admit that Nashville doesn't have room for those types of players on their roster. All four are Rich Peverley types that they don't have room for on the bottom two lines. O'Reilly and Spaling especially.

Barry Trotz coaches like it's NHL 98. Two scoring lines, a checking line, and a grinder line. If you're not top 6 in offense, find a new NHL system to play in.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Adam Oates
Dave Andreychuk
Pierre Turgeon
Phil Housley
Bernie Nicholls
Vincent Damphousse

have more points and are currently eligible. He was a key piece to the '99 Stars cup, and a supplemental piece on the '89 Flames and '03 Devils' runs. He never broke 95 points in a season despite playing in the 80's.
Nieuwendyk scored 51 goals for the '89 Flames, tied with Joe Mullen for the team lead and nobody besides the two of them had more than 27. I'd call that more than supplemental. Still, I agree with your broader point that offensive numbers need to be looked at in the context of their era.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure why Housley isn't in. He's, what, fourth all-time in points among defensemen? I'm not sure what they're waiting for with Andreychuk (640 goals!) either.

Florida overpays for Tomas Kopecky - 4 yrs/$12 mil.

Seriously, dude's nothing more than a 3rd/4th line checker without a Toews, Hossa, or Kane on his line.

The NHL has released a statement refuting this. On BobbyMac's twitter:

"We're not aware of any defects relating to Qualifying Offers tendered by NSH to certain of team's players as several media outlets reported"

Edit: Seems that the the NHLPA raised the issue with players' agents, according to McKenzie.

The Caps set the market when they overpaid Brooks Laich.

Three. Calgary, Dallas, NJ.

I saw that he only played 17 games in the playoffs for the Devils in the 2002-2003 season and figured they didn't win it...whoops. Must have missed a few games due to injury.

He never broke 95 points in a season despite playing in the 80's.

His first full season in the NHL was '87-'88, so it's not like he played the entire decade.

If I'm understanding that right, Drury ultimately decided to take less money during this buyout process than he could have received?

That's terrible.

Laich is a pretty solid 2nd/3rd line center who likely has several 50+ pt seasons ahead of him. Kopecky will likely post 25-30 pts. in FLA, at best - far worse overpayment there.

EDIT: Yes, Drury will get $3M & change, instead of the $5M he would've been due.

Habs trade Wisnewski's rights to the BJs for a conditional 7th round pick. It becomes a 5th rounder if they get him signed before July 1st.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Is the trading of negotiating rights the new big thing? I remember it happening in the past every now and then, but not like this offseason...

Roman Hamrlik also rejected a one year offer by Montreal and will almost assuredly be available on 7.1.

I really like what Buffalo did with Gerbe, that's a steal, IMHO.

He has certainly paid his dues and proved himself to the organization last year. Put up 16 goals in 64 games. Given the fact he now has security and an increased role, look for him to develop into a 20-25 goal scorer.

The FA pool is weak, especially among puck-moving defensemen. That said, I doubt Wiz signs with the BJs unless they offer him a king's ransom between now and noon on Friday.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

It is a shame to see his career end this way. He sure was fun to watch though. Overall a very good career.

Hall of Fame worthy, or in the same boat as Lindros (hurt too often)?

I'm biased so I would put him in. With only 480 goals I doubt he gets it. Without the injuries there's no telling what he could have done.
