2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

Looks like a dominating effort from USA today in a 5-2 win over Canada!

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

The 5-2 score doesn't seem to be a surprise given the outcome from the summer, the development of the game in the US, and the fact that Canada didn't make any change on the defensive end of things after being handled easily in August. The US winning three of the four World U18 tourneys should send a message of concern to the Canadian Hockey powers that be.

Four of four, if the refs and goal judge were on the ball, or there were the benefit of a goal cam. ;)

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

Hard for Canada to accept that they are just not as good. Why? IMHO, I think USA Hockey has done a better job than Hockey Canada at developing the female game.

With all due respect, just looking at the U18 results as a barometer to judge who has the better development system is a gross oversimplification.

At the U18 level over the last four years, this is the first year that the US is clearly better than the Canucks. During the inaugural year they had U18 the Canucks were the better team, winning 4 of 5 games. The next two years were pretty even, with each team claiming one gold and one silver during that stretch. This year the US was clearly dominant, winning all four HTH games, most of them decisive, but a one year blip is hardly a good barometer.

Besides, at the U22 level the Canucks have been dominant this year, and at the Senior level they won the last two Olympic golds. Hardly a sign of a USA development system that is better than that of the Canucks . Bottom line is, looking at the bigger picture over the last 5 or 6 years, the US and Canuck teams are fairly even at all levels.

Having said all that, congrats do go out to the US U18 team for winning the gold.

I don't know that I'd go so far as the USA Hockey vs. Hockey Canada developmental advantage conclusion. I would conclude the US U18 team in this tournament was better than their Canadian counterpart.

At the same time, I think it's also rather foolish to assume and imply the US had it's unequivocal best team at the tournament...but that's a convenient implication for purposes of making excuses and disparaging the accomplishment of the USA U18 squad.

Having said all that, congrats do go out to the US U18 team for winning the gold.
The team clearly deserves congratulations for their achievement. Well done, a significantly more classy response than we'll ever see from various other sources.
