U18 Women Win Exhibition
December 30, 2010

STOCKHOLM - Paced by a four-point effort from Haley Skarupa (Rockville, Md.), the U.S. Women's National Under-18 Team posted a 6-2 victory over Sweden in a game prior to the start of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's U18 Championship here tonight at Stora Mossen Arena. Team USA begins tournament play on Saturday (Jan. 1) against the Czech Republic.

Skarupa opened the scoring at 9:34 of the first frame when she took a feed from Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) and put it over Swedish netminder Elin Moberg's glove just after a U.S. power play had expired. The Americans extended their lead to 2-0 when Lee Stecklein's (Roseville, Minn.) point shot hit the back of the net at 18:30.

Sweden scored the lone goal of the second period to cut the U.S. lead to 2-1. Felicia Karlsson skated across the goalmouth and put a backhanded shot in the open right side of the net at 7:06.

After the Swedes tied the game at 2:16 of the third period, Team USA tallied four unanswered goals to account for the 6-2 final score. Skarupa netted her second of the game at 4:49 off Carpenter's rebound and Karley Sylvester (Warroad, Minn.) made it 4-2 at 11:18. Amanda Pelkey (Montpelier, Vt.) put the puck through Moberg's legs at 14:08 and Carpenter closed out the scoring at 16:46 with a hard shot from the slot.

Megan Miller (Long Grove, Ill.) and Shenae Lundberg (Peterborough, N.H.) combined for 11 saves in net for the U.S., while Moberg stopped 59 of Team USA's 65 shots in the losing effort.

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

The US takes on Sweden today at 1:30PM EST.

There is live coverage available here.

I've been watching and it is 4-0 about half way through the first period. The US team is good but I think there would be better competition if the US put together 3 or 4 more U18 teams for them to play. I can't watch anymore. Its too painful and I really hate these types of games. Its easy to see why there is talk of eliminating Women's Hockey from the Olympics for lack of competition. I hope other countries get better.

Tacit agreement? No one seems to be arguing with you.

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

At this point, you have to wonder if it wouldn't be better if the US and Canada sent U16 teams.

At least go back to playing this event later in the year so that kids aren't being pulled off of their HS/prep/club teams where they'd face better competition. They get a trip to Sweden out of the deal, but I'd guess that they see little beyond hotels and ice rinks.

I've been told it doesn't work too well in April as the Euro kids are on school break now. The MArch/April date last year was designed to accomodate prep for the Olympics by the various NGBs.

IMHO having it this time of year is just fine. School is kind off in between semesters anyways (at least in Canada it is), so now is a better time to miss than mid-semester (March - April)

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

I say that we got to keep attending these events in hopes that the other countries will see the value of developing a worthy woman's hockey program.

As far as the timing goes.....I say keep it between the Christmas hockey break so that the amount of school that is missed is minimized.

Re: 2011 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship

The US was only up 2-1 on the Czechs after one in a semifinal game, but it is now 7-1 after two.
