2011 Cycling thread.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Watched the Tour of Qatar yesterday on Versus. Not exactly the greatest race but it's interesting seeing them race across the desert. Question about the Schleck team. Who is there sponsor? The team is Leopard Trek but where does the Leopard part come from? Or as the announcer kept calling it Leo Pard not Leopard as in the animal.

Leopard is some sort of management company based in Luxembourg run by Brian(?) Nygaard.

LEE-o-par is the French (and presumably Luxembourger) pronunciation of LEP-erd.

I'm sure everyone who played the last few years got a note (or two) but BOTH road.cc and velogames.com have fantasy contests starting tomorrow with Omloop Het (Volk). For velogames, its a training ride and the first real race is Milano-San Remo. I think with roadcc.com its all real.

I put in a team on Velogames. I like that site better than roadcc.

Interesting start to Paris-Nice as the break stayed away, got to feel for Jens Voight he drives the stage winning breakaway only to see Thomas De Gendt and Jeremy Roy along with some in the peloton pass him at the line. For those with Versus they are doing daily coverage, In HD, for the whole race.

That sucks for Jens. I was shocked as I was flipping around the channels yesterday and saw that the race was on. At first glance I figured, per Versus history, that it was a replay of the Tour Down Under or something like that. Nice to see them have same day coverage of something beside the TdF.

I figured they would show the first stage Sunday then next week recap the rest of the race so a nice surprise. I am not sure if this is the reason but Versus recently became part of the NBC Sports family with the Comcast buyout and whoever is in charge of Unisport for NBC is a huge cycling fan. So I suspect they may be behind the lets replace one or two of them fishin shows with some cycling.

I knew that Versus was now part of NBC Sports but I didn't know about the Unisport guy being a cycling fan.

I can't remember where I read it but when they first showed the Giro I read an article which said that someone high up there was a big proponent of cycling. Unisport is showing Tirreno Adriatico daily starting Wednesday.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

George appears to have velogames in great shape this year. Features a classics league and I'm assuming he'll be ready for the Grand Tours.

Brian are you open for business in Phoenix?

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Boonen wins Gent-Wevelgem ahead of Bennati, Farrar and Greipel.

Chased down a break of four who got away on the second climb of the Kemmelberg, and were holding on to a 30 second lead for the longest time. Even in the last 10K, it took the pack forever to close down a 12 second lead.

Finally Ian Stannard of Sky attacked his remaining two break companions, Sagan of Liquigas and Chavanel of Quickstep with 2k to go, and the pack barely caught him with maybe 200 meters to go, and then the sprint was on.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Incredible race today!!! I went back and forth so many times, found new heros, laughed, cried, celebrated, wow, just everything.

Great win for Nuyens, but what a ride by Chavannel! I'm gutted that he lost. Stef Scheirlinckx from Veranda's out of nowhere! And what of Cance? Attacking 60K from the end and gaining over a minute only to be brought back by the entire BMC team, a bonk, and the Muur. Then Gilbert's attack on the Bosburg, for the 2nd time in an hour I thought it was over.

It comes back together and I figured that Boonen had somehow played the perfect race only to have Cance recover and go again...then Boonen almost bridging back in the last 500 meters...then Chava almost sprinting for the win if Cance had held his line. Just incredible!

Plus you have Vaughters on the radio telling his team not to work and wait for the sprint...nice aggressive tactics there JV. The Quickstep car telling Leypard that Chava wouldn't work because Cance was "too strong." Then Riis partying down in the Saxo team car.

Now 7 days till Hell! Cance will want revenge, Boonen looks to be coming into form, Chava and Steegmans looks good. Garmin will want to redeem themselves only to surely come up short. Can Langeveld or Boom make it? Flecha or Thomas?

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Can't knock Vaughters, it was the right strategy as it all did come back together. But when it did, and the fireworks began again, all of his guys were MIA.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

Understood but when he said it, it was awful...Cance was pulling away to a seemingly easy victory and JV gets on the radio and says "Let someone else pull." "We wait for the sprint for 1st or 3rd." Thats the type of negative racing that makes cycling boring. We ride for 3rd? Really?

Plus JV is the same guy who just made a big deal about making cycling more interesting and that race radio was only used for crashes and waterbottles, certainly not tactics.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

I am very glad that Boonen didn't win after going to the front of the pack and attacking with his teammate Chavenel a minute up the road. Cancellara closed that gap quick he took away the minute in about 5K all by himself and I figured the race was over.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

I'm an unabashed Boonen supporter and a massive Chavannel fan so I was a bit torn. However in Boonen's defense had this been a stage in the Giro or Tour we would likely have been applauding QST's tactics. He had a teammate up the road and was attempting to bridge up. In fact in the event, if he kept Cance's wheel or even the remains of the break didn't get in his way on the Leburg, then its 2 QSTs v. Cance for the finale.

Picture in the Giro or TDF, F. Schleck is up the road on the Zoncolon and Contador and Andy are riding in the Peloton, would we be upset if Andy attacked taking ONLY Conti with him? They bridge and its 2 on 1. Its actually perfect tactics, Tommeke just wasn't strong enough to pull it off and things collapsed. If they do bridge, its 3 strong riders up front and they probably stay away. As it was Chava has admitted that if he worked with Cance they stay away. Plus Boonen has watch a teammate win RvV twice in the last few years.

Re: 2011 Cycling thread.

A little disappointed in Hell this AM. I got up early, went to mass, and returned just in time to see Boonen standing in the middle of the Trouvee for 2 minutes waiting for a bike.

Excellent ride by Van Summaren for the win, I thought that Garmin had messed it up again for a few Ks. Cance was supremely impressive especially in his last attack, bet he, like me, wished that Boonen was still in the race, he would have worked to bring the break back.

Again very impressed by Chavanel despite his disappointing finish. He seemed like he just kept bridging back then falling off over and over again. Gritty performance.

I was also amused by Pozzato. I read an article by De Vlaeminck where he said that Pozzato was too pretty to win. What happens Pippo crashes and can't finish because the team car had a puncture. Not quite too pretty but seems about right.
