2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Your teddy bears were lucky to get the W. I thought UNH played a very good road game in a tough barn. Who knows maybe we'll get the pleasure of kickin' UMO's arse at the Gaahdan:eek:

When was the last time Maine won the season series w/ UNH? The regular season is what its all about, right? That's it for me. Enjoy the unfamiliar territory.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Somewhat disappointed in the outcome but not at all in the effort. To hold Maine to a single, fluky goal; keep their PP unit (#1 in the country) scoreless, while playing on the road in a charged atmosphere, and in a game that meant more to Maine than it did to us, makes me feel pretty good right now. Good job, 'Cats.

UNH lost all three of their PWR points this weekend, so will begin the post-season with zero. When was the last time that happened? The Cats also will need to win it all to reach a 20-win season. But, I will be happy with continued good play at Agganis this coming weekend.

Edit: oops, they only need to get to the Frozen Four to reach 20 wins for the season.

I'll take that as a compliment.
It was mostly after the whistle so I'm not so sure you should, I have to laugh at the whining about Joey when #5 had his hands up all game. There was a lot of pushing and shoving after the whistle. I wish Joey would have dropped #5:D

Is it lack of finishers that had you guys down this year? You guys move the puck easily, I wish Maine did. Tape to tape all night, great breakouts and easily transitions
I was expecting something else when looking at UNHs record.

Goal scoring has clearly been a problem, unlike in past years, and goaltending (in the first half) was also deficient. It's just been a down year. And regarding "#5" (Eric Knodel,) if his hands were up all night, where's the harm? The guy is 6' - 6" tall! Don't know how tall Diamond-in-the-Rough is, but I doubt it's close.

(Also, it was good to see UNH play with better precision and passion. If only a couple of our chances had gone in...but still, I'll take the effort any day.)

Satuday's game is on NESN at 4. Hopefully Downing is back for it, and can find a way to put the puck in the net, loved the effort in Orono not just need to finish. Never know what can happen taking 2 is a huge task, but I am not counting the boys out

What helped you figure out the lack of scorers... the 0 goals on the maddening number of shots off net?

I has been a rough year, they just don’t have any snipers. They grind well and they are now passing well in most games, but they cannot finish. It seems the pucks are either wide all night or right into the goalie. At least when they are hitting the goalie there is a chance he fumbles the puck and it gets in the net. My personal favorite play is the screaming shot of net that goes wide short side and rockets around the boards and out of zone, it is a bonus play the goalie doesn’t need to make a save and as a bonus the defense doesn’t need to clear the puck or worry about an icing.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Pretty excited for this weekend. We're going to have to play our best defensively and get some puck luck offensively. Millan has stolen games from us in the past.

One thing that has been driving me crazy (like others have mentioned) is how bad our shooting has been. Too many people trying to pick top corners and completely missing the net on Grade A opportunities. Preston Callander was great at shooting low. During the UNH/PC game on CBSC they had a segment on PC Coach, Nate Lehman. Before warm ups he was speaking to the team, "Make sure you hit the net during warm ups. A player who misses the net during warm ups is clearly not focused." Pretty meaningful quote. I don't know what other people notice during warm ups... but yeah.

Finally, any old time UNH fans might be interested in something I stumbled upon on Ebay

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Not a whole lot going on in here. Who plays this weekend? Is Downing going to be back? Willows or Pavelski?

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

I am looking forward to watching the Saturday afternoon game here in Colorado, where one of the bars picks up NESN via satellite.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Well its game day. As I think everyone knows the key for the Cats will be scoring, like it has been for the last 4 months. Will someone step up and become a playoff here and carry the team? Will the defense play as well as they did last week and continue to improve every game, and will DeSmith keep up the stellar play he has shown since the beginning of the calendar year? Hopefully Downing is back in the line up tonight. I am going to go with my surprise guy being Burke, he has come close a couple of times this year of breaking out and carrying the team, and if Downing is back with him I think we could see it. Would like to see the boys come out and play an aggressive game they did the last home game against BC. I really liked they way they played that game, they controlled the game and were psychical, if they play that game I think they have a very good shot. I see this going 3 games, with hoping the Cats take it, but have a hard time saying it for sure. I do see it being a close series, and might come down to which goalie is more on.
