2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

I see your point and sorry for assuming, Yale is a good team and with health and some more experience will be better. Right now they are inconsistent and vulnerable to being worn down by larger hard hitting teams. The defense is very spotty and if not for Malcolm in goal would really be exposed. As far as the east coast thing, I think early in a season these pollsters tend to work off of last seasons numbers and do not judge a team by realistic observation. Once the holidays are over most of the teams will shake down into their proper rankings. I always wonder who the single "number one" vote comes from for Yale, must be a real fan though.
I think they can be good when they want to be, but right now need to be a lot more consistent. I think the pollsters all go for the last years results early in the season, rightly or wrongly, but it shouldn't take for the season to be half over for it to shake out.

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

More egregious is that no one else has listed Lowell in their top 10 or even honorable mention. Despite being 9-4, 9th in the PWR, 10th in RPI.

Ludicrous.

FWIW, PWR and RPI are basically meaningless at this point in the season. That being said, I will admit that I had overlooked Lowell. I don't think I would have them in my top 10 right now, but I probably would have them in my honorable mention.

Yeah, I'd love to pimp and hype as well but you can't get around that they have to show more for people to have confidence. That being said, if people are getting nervous then that is exactly where I want them.

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

1) Ohio State - A sweep for the hottest team in the country
2) Minny - Took care of business with a sweep
3) UMD - Nice sweep of Tech
4) BC - Hard earned split
5) Notre Dame - Tough week for the Golden Dome
6) CC - still like hown they're playing
7) Colgate - Austin Smith for Hobey... and that's coming from a Cornell fan...
8) Cornell - Kind of scared to think of what might happen in Estero without the hottest goalie in the country. Iles has 5 straight home shutouts, halfway to McKee's single season shutout record for Cornell.
9) UMass Lowell - haven't seen them play yet, but both Krach and PWR like them
10) Union - Probably shouldn't be keeping them in after a 2 point weekend, but the win vs Michigan last week was impressive
Outside, Looking In - BU, DU, UNO, Merrimack, LSSU, Ferris.
I know its a complete overreaction to Merrimack, but not only getting swept by PC, but losing the second game 6-1 on their home ice? Ouch.

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

For those of you who have been voting previously, here is the thread to post your "ballot" of top-10 teams. If you have never posted before, but would like to, here is where you post your top-10. If you would like your ballot to be counted, make sure to have your top-10 posted in this thread by Monday (Dec 5) by 1pm Eastern.

Here is my top 10...

1. Minnesota Duluth - While the other teams at the top faltered, Duluth swept an improved Michigan Tech team at Houghton
2. Ohio State - The Buckeyes just keep winning. Very impressive, especially when you factor in how good the CCHA has been
3. Colorado College - The Tigers won arguably the most exciting, well-played game of the weekend against rival DU.
4. Minnesota - The Gophers struggled at times against Mankato, but pulled out the important four points.
5. Boston College - The Eagles managed a split with BU on the weekend, which could be the last time the two sides play this season
6. Merrimack - Several people, including myself, were curious how Merrimack would respond to their first loss of the season...answer? Not good.
7. Notre Dame - The Irish were embarrassed at home against Northeastern on Friday, and then dropped the rematch Saturday.
8. Michigan State - The Spartans are 8-1-1 in their last 10, including a weekend sweep against Bowling Green
9. Boston University - Their 6-1 loss to BC snapped a 5 game winning streak, which included 2 victories over Boston College
10. Cornell - The Big Red scored only one goal this weekend, but thanks to two shutouts Cornell went 1-0-1 on the weekend

Honorable Mention:
Union
Michigan Tech
Denver
Ferris State
Yale

As always, comments are appreciated and please post your top-10s.

Good thing your not a bias wannabe hack college hockey guru columnist eh

pffft

good luck in your day job

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

You are attacking him on THAT? He has the Gophers too high, and he doesn't have UND under honorable mention, which they probably should be.

He knows why im rubbing his nose in his own stink.

Guy seeps with Gopher spite in all that he writes, he would like to come off as unbias and professional, yet he's merely a hack wannabe college hockey guru.. Much the same reason he just chimed in on the UM/MTU thread bashing the Gopher fanbase...

He can keep slurping up board cred til his knees buckle, that still wont change the fact his "columns" are nothing more than bias hack jobs.

edit: I would put the Gophs out of the top 10, just to keep em working.. I think @1 went straight to their heads

What "columns" are you referring to?

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

Just like this thread really.:(

Pretty much. It is fun to see how everyone sees the landscape of college hockey though on a weekly basis. But, at the end of the day you are spot on. Polls mean absolutely nothing other than to give fans a sense of accomplishment during the regular season.

Also, for those of you who would like to post your top 10s, there are about 2.5 hours left to do so. For those of you who have already posted your top 10s...thank you.

I know its a complete overreaction to Merrimack, but not only getting swept by PC, but losing the second game 6-1 on their home ice? Ouch.

Your logic against Merrimack should be used in your logic for Notre Dame. How can you have ND at #5 after they lost to Northeastern 9-2 at home and then 2-1. Merrimack took 5 of 6 points against Northeastern this year.

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

Exactly. If Northeastern keeps playing like this, they'll find their way into the rankings. FWIW, the Huskies have played a pretty rough schedule so far. If they could have done better than 0-4-1 against BC and Merrimack, they would probably be on the cusp of the top 10. For now though, I'm going to wait to see if they can have continued success before putting them in the mix.

Not that I fully think NU should be in the top 10, but I think the offical poll voters are doing a lot of what you are doing here.

Yes NU is 0-4-1 against BC and Merrimack. But that's where everyone stops because its NU who are typically a team, that since the 80s (with 1 exception year) has been a .500 team at best over the years. NU doesn't get the respect or time devoted to look within the numbers like some other teams would...

However, in the 5 games against BC and Merrimack, 2 games were lost in OT. The OT loss to BC had NU up 3-1 in the 3rd. There was only one bad loss to Merrimack.

Further, it didn't just start with Mich. They had a 2 game win streak prior to that, with one being against Prov, a team that just swept #1. They then travelled west twice in a week, including one the day after thanksgiving. They then beat two former #1 teams three times handedly.

Also, the SoS is insane for NU. Something like 11 of their 34 games will be against a team ranked #1 at some point in the season, 8 of which have already happened (3-4-1).

What I'm trying to say here is that NU should probably be getting a little more attention in the polls than they are getting.

If you have Merrimack and Notre Dame dropping a handful of spots because they were swept in one weekend, you are clearly not looking at the full season's work. Merrimack finally lost their first two games of the season, yet they dive down. Why doesn't it work the other way around?

True, I'm giving Notre Dame a bit more slack for having beat more TUC, but if I were to redo this now, I'd drop out Union, move Notre Dame back two, and slide CC and Colgate up one and Merrimack into Unions spot at 10

Re: 2011-2012 NCAA Week 9 Rankings

I'll just say this. After seeing BC and Merrimack live, BC is much much scarier. But you already knew that.
