2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

So are people backing away from the edge after last nights game? They seemed to be a lot more focused than they have been in awhile. I especially liked that even when they let up, and UND started to get back into the game, they were able to pick up the pace, rather than just going in a shell and trying to hold on. Let's see if they can carry it into next week.
I laughed. I mean, I was as ****ed as anyone...I hate losing to sue. But the irrational people after the Friday night loss was ridiculous. Had they been swept, I could have seen it but it was one game that, despite their PP being awful in, they were a missed icing call and a softie by Patterson away from tying that game at the very least, IMO.

The question is whether they can carry over that focus from Saturday into next week like you said, Koho. CC is a good, high-powered team, but recent weeks have shown they aren't perfect as it took an OT winner against MSU-M before the break, a loss to Air Force in the holiday tourney, and an OT loss to Cloud at home. Definitely a big series for the Gophers. I see a split, but I think 3pts would be a good outcome against a good WCHA opponent.

I just hope that there isn't too much focus on trying to keep up with UMD. UMD clearly has the easier road from here on out and unless they go on a skid, I don't seem them having much trouble staying atop the WCHA. The Gophers need to focus on themselves and fix their own issues(namely the Friday night stinkage and the PP) and focusing on finishing in the top 3 and giving themselves a favorable road to the Final Five.

The WCHA has screwed themselves non-conference. The WCHA will be lucky to get three teams in this year. That doesn't leave much margin for error. That's the ledge I have been pointing to. It had nothing to do with UND specifically.

I acknowledge the point about the less room for error due to a weaker WCHA meaning less entrants in the NCAA. But they're tied for first in the WCHA and 7th, or something, in pairwise after a few years of being about out of it at this point of the season. And their losses are not due to the other team being more talented. They've shown they can put together some great games at times. They put together a pretty good weekend, other than the PP on Friday and a lapse after building a big lead on Saturday (which they recovered from). And they have a goalie that can steal a game at times. And you need to also admit, that even if their margin of error is less due to a weaker WCHA, what that also means is that the teams they are competing against to get one of the WCHA spots in the NCAA are weaker than years past. So they just have to be better than those teams. I think if they managed to win the National Championship this year, you'd barely get over 50% with your glass.

Scooby's glass is forward-looking; it's like a leading economic indicator.

The team's record is decent, they're in the middle of the tournament field if the season ended today, and they're tied atop the WCHA with Duluth. However, if they continue this lengthy bout of .500 hockey through season's end, they may very well find themselves on the wrong side of the cut-line. Again.

Reminder: Jake Bischoff is playing on TV against WBL on Hockey Day in MN.

But once again, the teams below them in the WCHA aren't setting the world on fire either.

Scooby's glass reached an all-time high of 51% in April of 2003. It was back to to 27% by May.... :)

The grandsons with the Nanne name outdo the one with the Lettieri name last night as Tyler set up Louie for a goal while Vinni was held scoreless in Edina's 3-2 victory at Pagel last night!

Since GPL is down...HILARIOUS to see gold pants getting face time on tv. And by facetime I mean seeing the camera and forcing his way on screen.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Gophers deserved to lose that one. Lets hope the team learns to play for 60 minutes soon.

F that guy. Doosh.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I see more fight in this team. Lots of chances, there were times the game looked like it could go either way. Better than last last year, and the year before, and the year before. Michigan Notre Dame game was very fast paced, playoff like. Lots of great college hockey on tonight.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I thought the effort was there most of the night and they had many quality chances to score but the CC goalie was a brick wall, CC is also a very solid team.

Split is a must.

They've lost 4 of 5 now. Split is meaningless. This is yet another weekend where their opponent goes for the sweep and they try to save face.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

This is a .500 hockey team again. Same ****, different year.
All but one of their losses have been by a single goal, so at least they're competitive.

Still, this lengthy stretch of .500 hockey is tough to take. Not scoring on 5 minute powerplays is killing them.
