2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

Macha (although he didnt show it in Mil) and Valentine as far as winning goes are about the same. But sometime its just about needing to make a change more than making an upgrade. I don't think there is an established high end manager out there at the moment.

They could go the route of bringing in a young mananger who has been in the league as a coach or minors guy. But you never know what you are going to get there either.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

Official announcement came today - 2 year deal with a club option for a 3rd. News conference is later today.

I can't find the blog entry now, but Brian Anderson (who had worked with him before) said Roenicke is aggressive and likes to run. With some of the great speed on the Brewers, I'd like to see a little more running too.

Peterson's future in doubt?

Melvin and Roenicke are going to meet with pitching coach Rick Peterson tonight to see if Roenicke and Peterson hit it off. If they don't, even though Peterson has a year left on his contract, the Brewers probably will make a switch.

"I want to wait until Ron sits down with him and see what happens," said Melvin.

Ryan Braun and Yo win Silver Slugger awards.

Still no official decision on Peterson, but it seems like if they were going to keep him, they would've decided by now.

everything I have heard about Peterson is the rienicke is looking into other options. I'm kinda thinking the long time frame means we'll be keeping Peterson.

"will someone.... ANYONE... PLEASE... be the pitching coach for the Brewers?"
-crickets chirping-
"ok, Peterson's staying"

Sedar is returning, though his role is not yet known. Maybe he can be the pitching coach? He can't do worse.

Kranitz, Narron join coaching staff
Rick Kranitz replaces Rick Peterson as pitching coach and Jerry Narron takes over as bench coach as the Brewers just announced their coaching staff under new manager Ron Roenicke.

I guess Ron Roenicke didn't get my resume.

and Garth Iorg will be the new first base coach.

Brewers interested in Jeff Francis? also mentioned: JDLR. I'd think the Brewers are interested in pretty much anyone than can throw over 80 mph and get within a foot of the plate, so this doesn't seem like a big newsflash. :)

Doug Melvin says on the record the Brewers are not shopping Prince Fielder, but as the article says, he doesn't want to seem too desperate and let teams take advantage (as if teams don't know the Brewers are desperate for pitching?)

plus how are we gonna sign Cliff Lee if he thinks Fielder won't be back? ;)

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

Trevor Hoffman gets more awesome every day: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/110283439.html

The Brewers made what appeared to be a stunning move by offering salary arbitration to Hoffman, a Type B free agent. But, in a gentleman's agreement, the 43-year-old veteran agreed not to accept, leaving the club with a high draft pick next year should he sign elsewhere.

Also from the link - Brewers made offers to Eric Hinske, Counsell and Capuano, and Willie Randolph was hired by the Orioles as bench coach.

I certainly like these offers. Counsell has been good as a bench player, and I would look forward to Hinske on the team.

That's really nice of Hoffman, especially considering this probably makes him even more unattractive as a free agent for anyone considering him.

I was looking over some of the rumors and nothing terribly exciting jumped out. Of course the Prince situation is at the forefront. I'm just not sure whether they'll get the deal they want here. It's apparent any big pitching move will be with a trade. The name Zack Grienke is exciting, but I'm just not sure that will ever come close to happening. Prince seems like the only they are likely to move who would command that kind of return and it wouldn't make sense for the Royals. It sounds like they may try to find another veteran pitcher to fill a spot if the price is right. The names Millwood and Washburn have come up. Maybe they'd give what we hoped Davis would last season.

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

A good source told me that the Brewers have acquired right-hander Shaun Marcum from the Toronto Blue Jays. I don’t know what the Brewers are sending to Toronto in exchange but the source told me it involved minor-league pitching prospects.

Marcum, who will be 29 on Dec. 14, went 13-8 with a 3.64 ERA in 31 games for the Blue Jays this season. In 120 major-league games, including 95 starts, he has a 37-25 record and 3.85 ERA, much of it pitching in the tough AL East.

I like Shaun Marcum :)

Re: 2010 Milwaukee Brewers Offseason - Prince or no Prince?

Marcum for Brett Lawrie straight up...seems like a great deal if they lock up Weeks and Zmarcum performs at or better than what he has been.
