Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

...On that play Wilson should have made that save...period. But it's over with...Mangene will be a Spark-Plug where-ever he plays and most likely a ton of time as a forward...I'm just glad he's playing for Maine.

that is not what a defenseman should be thinking on that kind of play. on a 2-on-1, yeah, D takes the pass and lets the goalie must make the save.

most of the time, D needs to be thinking that the guy is not going to be allowed to get the shot off.

That wasn't the leather helmet days, was it? :p

No,leather hadn't been invented yet...Pretty sure they were carved from birch bark with sharpened deer shanks.

But whatever,Maine was f-n hopeless back then. They were getting steam-rolled by the likes of Kutztown State,FCS.It's nice to see them playing football on national TV once in a while these days. There are probably as many Black Bears in the NFL as there are in the NHL right now.Never thought I'd see that!

I'd like to see Nemec in more of a full-time role, he impressed with what I saw of him. Showed more than Cornell or Hegarty have so far.

Should be an interesting year. I think all three of these guys have something to prove this year

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

I hope Nemec throws his weight around a little more this year. He plays smart, but he is also a little conservative. If he's to elevate his game this year, he'll need to take a high-reward risk every now and again :)

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Great plan five years ago when Bobby Wilder was ready to take over the football program. Unfortunately Old Dominion already raided him and half his staff is former Maine guys.

Interesting...I can't listen to the radio over here without hearing about ODU. Those folks are absolutely hell-bent on athletic success. They've got the local ESPNradio affiliate in their back pocket.

As for the article, I think there's actually NO question that Maine plays in the toughest FCS conference in the country. Of course, it's the southern division that makes it so tough, but who's counting? :p

True and false. UNH has beaten a I-A opponent what six years in a row? UMass has a national title and a runner-up. Hopefully since Maine's done such a great job recruiting upstate NY we can get some of the leftovers from the Hofstra void and continue to grow...

But yeah the faith ODU put in a guy from Maine and the number of Maine guys he employs tells a lot about the kind of staff Cosgrove put together.

Steve Abbott, former Republican candidate for governor, is expected to be named UMaine's interim athletic director.

Very good choice IMO. Solid ties to the university and state, UM lineage with his dad being a former UM football coach and administrator, and a Harvard grad to boot (must be pretty smaht ;) ).

Don't know the man, but like the credentials and political ties never hurts with this kind of position!:)

I think its a good choice, someone outside the Dept who can see whats going on inside the dept. I know his brother and his dad better than I know Steve but he comes from a good family so....

It will be interesting to see if he is a final selection nominee for the full time position. I have no idea what his aspirations are but he had some time on his hands leading him to the interim position. James was selected for the permanent post when he was serving in the interim position as well.

He was on the news last night and I believe he said he was interim only but...

I think its a good sign inasmuch as you can't hire someone LESS qualified than the interim you are replacing. Right?

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

Personally i think its a great sign that they went outside the U instead of just slapping the interim tag on James' right hand man

Re: 2010 Maine offseason: a lazy summer on the Stillwater

ummmm, were you are the Garden for the final game last season? and the final goal?

I do NOT want to see Mangene on D, not if he has to play the way Timmy wants his defensemen to play. Granted, Dumoulin was just as permissive around the net as Mangene was, but I kinda think that Dumoulin has a better up side at D.
Mangene is a fine foreward.

He made one mistake and it cost him. Guys who have played defense all their lives made just as horrible errors last season and seasons past as well.

Until then, he'd been playing very well, far better than you could have expected him to, and better than a few of the regular defense guys.

Not so sure the administration went outside the University. His father will probably be "calling the shots";) .
