2010 IIHF Four Nations Cup

Re: 2010 IIHF Four Nations Cup

Ohio State has three current players and one former player participating in the 4 Nations Cup.

Tessa Bonhomme (Canada)
Natalie Spooner (Canada)
Annie Svedin (Sweden)
Minttu Tuominen (Finland)

Good luck to all of them!

Re: 2010 IIHF Four Nations Cup

Thanks OnMAA, I corrected that. I knew it was Scandanavian. Think my fingers were moving faster than my brain on that one. Kitchener, ON, shoot, that's closer to me than Lake Placid! I will really have to keep a closer eye on this in the future. It's probably the closest thing to the Winter Olympics I will ever see (in person, anyway).

U.S. Women Top Sweden, 4-1, in Pre-Four Nations Cup Match-Up

November 5, 2010

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Jinelle Zaugg-Siergiej (Eagle River, Wis.) scored two goals in leading the U.S. women's team past Sweden, 4-1, here tonight at Watson Arena on the campus of Bowdoin College. The game served as a tune-up prior to the start of the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup.

The U.S. team was comprised of the 22 players who have been participating in a women's training camp at Bowdoin since Sunday (Oct. 31). Eleven of the players are members of the U.S. Women's Select Team that will compete in the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup next week (Nov. 9-13) in St. John's, N.L. The remaining 11 players who will not participate in the Four Nations Cup include four Olympians and seven members of the 2010 U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team.

Team USA converted on its first power-play opportunity at 8:25 of the opening frame. Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) took a shot from the right point and Zaugg-Siergiej beat Swedish netminder Sara Grahn with the rebound for a 1-0 U.S. lead. Danijela Rundqvist scored for Sweden at 17:26 of the period to even the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Zaugg-Siergiej netted her second goal of the outing after a scramble in the Swedish goalmouth to put the Americans up 2-1 at 14:04 of the second stanza. The U.S. held a 22-2 shots advantage in the period.

In the final frame, Emily Field (Littleton, Mass.) scored off Grahn's chest at 2:40, then Allie Thunstrom (Maplewood, Minn.) put a wrist shot to the top right corner of the net from the slot at 5:11 to cement the U.S. victory.

The three U.S. goalies - Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio), Megan Miller (Long Grove, Ill.) and Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) - combined for 14 saves, while Grahn made 52 stops in net for Sweden.

U.S. Women's Select Team Tops Canada, 3-2, in Shootout

November 9, 2010

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Hilary Knight (Hanover, NH) scored the winning goal in a shootout to propel the U.S. Women's Select Team to a 3-2 win over Canada in the opening game of the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup for both teams here tonight at Mile One Centre. Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped all three shooters and made 32 saves in net for the victory.

The U.S. scored in the opening seconds of the game for a 1-0 lead that held through the first period. Canada scored a pair of power-play markers and the Americans added a tally in the second frame for a 2-2 score that remained until the end of overtime before Team USA clinched the win in a shootout.

"It was a good start for us," said Katey Stone, head coach for Team USA. "We have a lot to build on from here. We exposed our weaknesses and our strong goaltending kept us in the game. We got better as the game went on and put ourselves in a position to win - there are good things to come."

Team USA got on the board just :11 into the contest when Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) dumped the puck into the Canadian zone, it bounced off the end boards and found Jenny Potter (Edina, Minn.) in front of the net. Potter knocked it into the open net while Canadian netminder Shannon Szabados was out of the goal intending to play the puck.

Despite an early Canadian power-play opportunity and back-to-back American man-advantage chances late in the frame, the score remained 1-0 at the end of the period.

In the second period, Canada scored on the power play at the 2:07 mark to tie the score at 1-1 before Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) deflected a Caitlin Cahow (Branford, Conn.) shot past Szabados to put the U.S. back up by a goal at 10:18. Just over two minutes later, Canada again converted on a power play, this time with Meaghan Mikkelson putting a wrister in the near side of the net from the left faceoff circle at 12:36.

The teams played to a draw in the third period, each killing off one penalty while Canada held a slight edge in shots, 11-10.

In the five minute 4-on-4 overtime session, Vetter stopped both of Canada's shots to send the game to a shootout, where Knight was the lone scorer for either team to secure the tournament-opening victory.

The game was the first time the U.S. and Canada played each other since the gold-medal match at the 2010 Olympics. In that game, which featured the same two goaltenders, Canada posted a 2-0 win. The U.S. victory over Canada was the first in the last seven games between the two teams.

NOTES: Canada held a 34-26 advantage in shots ... Jessie Vetter was named U.S. Player of the Game ... The U.S. was 0-for-5 on the power play, while Canada was 2-for-6.

AMERICANS WIN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL REMATCH IN SHOOTOUT

by Amanda Guy

St. John's, N.L. - Hilary Knight of the United States scored the only goal in the shootout, edging out the Canadians 3-2 at the Mile One Centre on the opening day of the 4 Nations Cup.

The Americans both closed and open the scoring at Tuesday night's game, as just 11 seconds into the first period, American Jenny Potter scored after a dump-in that bounced the puck off the boards in front of a wide open net. Jocelyne Lamoureux assisted the goal. There were three penalties in the first period, with the United States sent to the box once and Canada serving two. Canada pestered and peppered U.S. goaltender Jessie Vetter in the final seconds of the period, but they came up empty-handed by the intermission.

The second period started with Canada's golden goal scorer, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.), tipping one past Vetter at 2:07 on the power play, with help from Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ont.).

Meghan Duggan gave the United States the lead once more at 10:18, taking a feed from Caitlin Cahow. At 12:36 in the period, with nine seconds left on the power play, Jocelyne Larocque (Ste. Anne, Manitoba) and Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont.) assisted Meaghan Mikkelson (Edmonton, Alta.) to make it even at two goals apiece. Team U.S.A. received four penalties, while officials handed Canada two offences. Before the second was up, American netminder Jessie Vetter mad some huge saves, denying a couple of Canadian breakaways.

The third period was action-packed but scoreless, sending the Olympic gold medal rematch into sudden victory four-on-four overtime. The Canadians spent most of OT in the offensive zone, but once again they couldn't put the puck past Vetter.

Canada's Poulin hit the post with in the shootout, while Megan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) were both denied by Vetter. Hilary Knight scored on Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta.) for the win.

There was no surprise for Team U.S.A.'s player of the game, with Vetter receiving the honour after stopping 34 shots in regulation. Mikkelson was named player of the game for Canada.

Canada's National Women's Team travels to Clarenville on Wednesday to take on Sweden at 7 p.m. NT.

OnMAA & Hux, Thanks for taking the time to post those stories. Sounds like it was a very evenly played game that could have gone either way. Heading to a college football game tonight. I'll have to catch up later.

Sweden, 4-0

November 12, 2010

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Four different players scored and Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped all 20 shots she faced, as the U.S. Women's Select Team posted a 4-0 shutout against Sweden at the 2010 Women's Four Nations Cup here today at Mile One Centre. With the win, Team USA topped the round-robin standings with a 2-1-0-0 record and will play for the championship tomorrow (Nov. 13) against the winner of tonight's Canada-Finland game.

"It was another good win," said Katey Stone, head coach for Team USA. "We got better as the game went on, kept it simple and made a lot more team plays."

Team USA opened the scoring just 3:20 into the contest, marking the third consecutive game that the Americans took a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of opening period. The all-University of Wisconsin line of Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho), Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) combined for goal No. 4 in the last two games. Duggan skated the puck into the Swedish zone and passed to Decker in the left faceoff circle. Decker spun the puck around to Knight, who beat Sweden goaltender Sara Grahn from the slot.

In the second period, Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.) knocked in Jenny Potter's (Edina, Minn.) rebound from the right post on the power play at 2:24 to put the U.S. up, 2-0. Team USA had three additional man-advantage opportunities in the frame and a total of 15 shots, but was unable to solve Grahn again as the score remained 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Monique Lamoureux-Kolls (Grand Forks, N.D.) extended the U.S. lead to 3-0 just :29 in to the final stanza when her wrist shot from the right faceoff dot hit the crossbar and went into Sweden's net. Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) assisted on the play. Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) closed out the scoring with an empty-netter at 19:06 to account for the 4-0 final score.

NOTES: The U.S. outshot Sweden, 42-20 ... Kacey Bellamy was named U.S. Player of the Game ... Team USA was 1-for-6 on the power play, while holding Sweden scoreless on three chances ... The shutout was the seventh in Jessie Vetter's career.
