2010-2011 Rutter DIII Computer Rankings Thread

I have updated my website for the D3 teams and the rankings are now live. Here is the link:

http://math.bd.psu.edu/faculty/rutter/D3_Rankings.html

As always, I am not as familiar with the D3 results, and any slight name change (St. Thomas vs. Saint Thomas, for example) on the site where I scrap results will cause me to miss games, so if things don't make sense, please let me know.

how is holy cross still 8 with their loss last week? just curious? I figured they'd drop far after losing to Sacred Heart who's not even on your list??

I suspect Sacred Heart, because it is not in a DIII league is probably handled as an exhibition against a DI team and thus not calculated in the results.

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DIII Computer Rankings Thread

holy cross is d1

However, it plays in a D3 league which allows it enough games against common opponents (ECAC-East) to include them in a statistical analysis, unlike Sacred Heart which does not participate in a league and plays a good number of D1 teams in addition to a selection of other teams including St Mikes and St. A's (D2). Sacred Heart IIRC only plays 1/2 of it games against D3 opponents, not enough to do rankings.

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DIII Computer Rankings Thread

Sacred Heart: They act like a DI team in the sense they start playing games in Septmeber, and they play a number of DI games, 7 this year I believe. They also play a number of DIII games, but are not in a DIII conference. Therefore, I choose not to put them in either ranking. Once they decide to play a primarly DI or DIII schedule, I will start to include them. Games against Sacred Heart and Holy Cross do count toward DI RPI, I have been told.

Holy Cross, Saint Michael's, and Saint Anselm play DIII teams, starting in late October/early November and play a DIII league schedule. So even though they are not eligable for the DIII NCAA tournament, I include them in my rankings. Since the games count toward a league championship, they should count in a ranking system.

So Holy Cross' game against Sacred Heart doesn't count?

So Holy Cross' game against Sacred Heart doesn't count?

Yes, that is correct. I don't think the games against Sacred Heart count for anything, except if overall record is a tiebreaker for the conference regular season, if the conference counts these games. Therefore, a coach may choose to play a different goalie, mix up the lines, experiment of the penalty kill/power play, in what is essential an exhibition game. Hard to justify including those games in the rankings.

LakersFan, Could you give an explaination in laymens terms why the Rating number for example Gustavus, UW Stevens Point, and River Falls changes from the prior week when I do not believe any of the teams played nor did any of the teams they have played played? Just curius(sp?). Thanks

If I had to guess, it is early in the season and what you may see is the secondary result of GAC getting spanked at NCAAs last year (early Rutter polls include the end of last season IIRC). This drags down UWRF and UWSP who were in a chain of losses to GAC at the end of the season. Of course, I could be wrong...

If you create what is called a network graph of all the games played (nodes for each team, lines between nodes for each game played), you would likely see that all of the teams are connected. Or at least large groups of teams are connected. And as long as one game is played among the connected team, it will have an effect on every team in the web. The further away the teams are from the game, the less the impact, but with only a few games being played, the effect is magnified.
