2010-2011 Rutter DI Computer Rankings Thread

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DI Computer Rankings Thread

By the way, looking closely at USCHO.com's PWR, it appears not to be awarding a point for record vs. TUC. When you click on an individual comparission, both are 0 when one is clearly higher (BU vs UM for example).
It doesn't appear to be consistent, because in some cases it does award a TUC point (UM vs UND for example).

If the good doctor doesn't post an update, you can always check out his site yourself. And yes, we'd be in much better shape if the NCAA used the Rutter rankings instead of the PWR.:(

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DI Computer Rankings Thread

The "we" in my previous post meant the Gophers, the team both brooky and I support, and is thus more specific and selfish than a general basis for Rutter being superior to the PWR and the PWR's primary criterium, RPI. I do not expect you or any fan of BU to share a belief that Rutter would be an improvement, because this season's Terriers would fare worse in that analysis. If you are interested in general case discussions of RPI versus Rutter, they exist on the women's forum, and RPI (or PWR) versus KRACH are all over USCHO. I know enough about statistics to understand some of what LakersFan and dave1381 are saying, but not enough to try to speak the language.

I was out of town yesterday, and then I just figured I would wait and run my ratings after the Cornell at Mercyhurst game this evening. My mother is watching the kids, so my wife and I will actually be able to watch the game/do stats together for the first time in years.

Yes, I understand the implications of implying that doing stats together at a hockey game is the most exciting date we have had in the past two months. Our childern are doomed to geekdom.

:D Isn't love grand?

Of course, the other very real possibility is that instead they will avoid like the plague patterning themselves after you. No worries. One of our roles as parents is mortifying our kids. ;)

And since Mercyhurst lost last night, my wife will never be allowed to attend a game without the kids as it is now bad luck :)

Well, since I have seen your kids at the rink not wearing pocket protecters, they are fine.

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DI Computer Rankings Thread

A different outcome at the top than this week's USCHO poll in which Wisconsin, 2-0-2 against UMD and UM during the past two weeks, saw one additional first-place vote swing into its column. At the same time Cornell declined slightly in a qualitative poll, its dominating performance over much lesser competition during the same period (4-0 by a combined 25-1) caused it to rise in a quantitative ranking.

That is an understatement your "lesser competition" has a collective record of 19-52-11 with several of the wins coming against each other. Clearly the computer and the eastern pollsters don't really adjust for the strength of schedule effectively. UW has played 17 games against the 10 teams shown above; the only common opponent is Mercyhurst. Cornell split with them and UW won 7-4. Any ranking that places Cornell above UW at this point can't be taken seriously. Cornell is good, but really has yet to prove how good they are, UW has proven it several times already. Just my opinion

Re: 2010-2011 Rutter DI Computer Rankings Thread

As a Wisconsin native and lifelong UW fan, I know how dangerous it can be to tangle with a rabid badger. You're right granddaddyscout; "lesser quality" is an understatement, which is why my actual characterization reads "much lesser quality." Ah yes, let's examine the common opponent. UW prevailed 7-4 at home against Mercyhurst. The goal totals in Cornell's two-game home-and-home series with the Lakers were 6-4. Perhaps a respectable enough performance that the Big Red might someday be allowed to carry the bags and sticks of the mighty Badgers into an arena.

Food for post-season thought -- Cornell won 3-0 this year in Erie, PA. UW's last shutout in this city on a real lake was in 2000. Number of players on the current rosters from those games: Cornell 20, Wisconsin 0.
