2009 MLB Playoffs

That is actually really funny. I'm shocked this doesn't happen all the time against the shift.

Memo to Terry Francona: bat Ellsbury in front of Papi. It would be funny...

I'd imagine that most teams wouldn't have a pitcher be as brain-dead as Lidge and forget to cover third.

Exactly. This isn't the first time someone has stolen while the shift was on. It's the first time the pitcher was a complete buffoon. :)

Very heads up by Damon though, I laughed my arse off.

Can you imagine in a situation where the ball is in the dirt and the runner takes second uncontested, he still has his momentum and rounds second and could take third easily. The pitcher probably doesn't break to third until the runner rounds second.

This is why the shift is stupid.

Re: 2009 MLB Playoffs

If that ball had gone to the backstop and kicks the right way, there's an outside chance that Damon comes all the way around to score, if the pitcher falls asleep on the mound.

If? He was in deep REM as Damon went to second. :)

It was weird watching it on TV, Damon breaks for 2nd & I thought it Lew Ford had pinch run. :D

The pitcher covering home on a wild pitch comes up in game situations a lot more often than covering third when the defense is playing an extreme shift. I'm not sure why I'm defending Lidge, but I think he would've been there to cover home if need be.

Having a Candian-American sing the National Anthem seems fishy to me. ;) :p

Good news: this is the last game in Philly this year, so we won't have the lame launching of fireworks to coincide with two specific lines of the National Anthem for a while.
