2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I'm not putting too much into the loss. Anytime a team plays without their best dman it hurts, and in unh's case, kessel is y far their top D, so it really hurts. Also, a trip down to rpi for 1 game is fairly taxing. Hockey east teams get spoiled when it comes to travel, so even though its only 4 hours away, it is something they aren't used to. On the encouring side of things, rpi's goalie played well, and all of unh's top guys seemed to generate offense. Pete leblanc put 6 shots on net, 90 percent of the time that happens you walk away with at least 1 goal. They will be fine, one thing I'm not a fan of is their 3rd line. Doesn't seem like a shutdown group or energy group at all. I'm a huge steve moses fan, ut for the better of the team I'd toss paul thompson on that first line, he's a better finisher then moses. I'd drop moses down to a line with borisnuk and block, for a energy line.

Positive side of this game was the top three lines were generating opportunities. We have good team speed except for Burke. I would give theses current lines some time to gel. Let’s give Moses some time. I thought the Borisenok, /Thompson/ McCarey looked good….out the own zone fast…down the ice and had many good opportunities.

Downside…… defenseman…..none of them can handle the puck cleanly. .On the power play when the puck goes out to the point their missing it….bobbling it…. Our power play in general was not good. Having defenseman who effective handle the puck can have a big impact on generating offense ( outlet passes, feeds in tight etc.). Some of the defensive coverage broke down . Beck is just scary out. Also, our forwards have a tendency to “dance” around the offensive zone looking for the prefect play. We need to shoot the puck..get are rebound.

However, I think this team has great potential…..thier young and will learn fast…

Sounds like my biggest concerns are coming true. Against Arcadia UNH hit and went to the front of the net, manufacturing goals. They worked hard in the o-zone, they didn't dance with it they moved it to the front and cashed in on rebounds. Note no coaches at practice until the morning of the game, based on NCAA rules.

From these descriptions, one week of practices with the coaches and we are back to soft hockey with a team that will only win on grit.

For me line I would put the line together as:

Butler - LeBlanc - Henrion
Sislo - Disimmone - Burke
(these two lines should look familiar)
Moses - Boresnik - Block
McCarey - Tompson - Whoever is playing well.

Don't worry about the line numbers. Play them all basically equal time. Ask them all to go to the net and hit (except the little guys they should go to the net and fly). If things don't go well juggle, don't about the rest until January. Young team teach them to work really hard and manufacture goals the rest will take care of itself.

Just me.

This is not true. NCAA rules limit the length of time coaches get on the ice with players prior to the season(Oct. 3 this year) on a weekly basis. During the preseason, coaches get a certain number of hours to spend with the time in a given week. Almost every practice I watched in the two weeks leading up to Acadia, coaches were on the ice.

From Foster's
UNH will host Acadia in an exhibition game Saturday night, the first official day of practice. The Wildcats have been engaging in captains' practices for the past three weeks.

Umile also said the coaches were only involved for 45 minutes on 3 days the week before but only for streching and observation no instruction or something like that. I don't know the exact rules but it was very limited coaching involvement - essentially none.

I think its essential that this program follows all the rules to a T...

Agreed.

My father heard Umile talk about what the coaches were allowed for involvement prior to the first offical practice. The allowed contact was very limited, he didn't remember all the restrictions discussed. I was told the rules allowed upto an hour but they were holding to 45 minutes. My extrememly filtered information sounded like observing.

What happened to the UNH hosts Miami thread? Cannot seem to find it, was it removed?? Couldn't get enough of that one! :D

That sounds pretty accurate.

I was kinda wondering the same thing. I was curious as to redhawkman10's response to my post disproving his theory that a slow start would doom a team to completely missing the NCAAs. Apparently it was to delete his thread. He's a quick one, indeed.

I've been on this board how long and didn't realize you could do that!

Anyway, he misunderstood and misquoted me. Do I want UNH to lose both games, no. Is it a good sign if they lose both games, no. However, do two losses in October doom your season, by no means. UNH has their hands full this weekend for sure, but I do think we will learn alot about this year's team by the end of Saturday night. Either way, sweep or swept, I will not get overly excited at this point in the season.

Moses will be back on the first line with Leblanc and Butler.
Kessel has been practicing this week and should be back as well.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

"We definitely generated chances," Sislo said, "and we should have capitalized on more of them. ... We need to get pucks to the net more and have people around the net that's how you're going to generate most of your goals. They're not going to be the pretty goals. We want to just focus, I think, on getting in the goalie's eyes and getting pucks on net and getting the dirty goals."

From Foster's

This is what this team is going to need to do to score goals. Now I just want to see them do it. The style they need to play all year is about grit, giving up the body and hardwork.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Good luck tonight, guys. Should be a good series. I'm hoping for a split. I know Miami fans and players have a lot of respect for your program's tradition and success. If you haven't noticed, we haven't had much success against Hockey East teams of late so I don't expect this to be any different.

I'll be posting my take on the series at a new blog some beer league buddies of mine and I started earlier this week at http://jacketsrequired.blogspot.com. We're also getting our Twitter feed started - @jacketsrequired - but not much there just yet.

The blog will focus on the Blue Jackets but I'm sort of the college hockey correspondent. I'll have a lot to say during the season, I'm sure.

That is easy to say (Sislo's comments), but it seems its been awhile since we have seen that kind of play in Durham. Let's hope they really mean it and actually follow through with it.

Well, I actually saw it during the exhibition game. Most of those goals were either through a screen, off a tip or a rebound. I was pleasantly surprised.

It sounds like they did none of the above last weekend.
