2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

I have to imagine that the players got an earful after the game Friday. Play against Lowell was a sometime thing but last night they took immediate advantage against a team that is clearly struggling. Two goals in less than a minute, then another two at the end of the first period, and the game was over. UNH did a pretty good job of neutralizing Marcou and Wellman, the two who basically are UMass' whole offense. They played great in transition and had UMass back on their heels most of the night. You don't want to take too much from the game, but UNH did the things they needed to do, did them consistently (very important) and did them well.

A four point lead on Maine, five on BC heading into the non-conference game vs. Dartmouth. Nice to know they can't be headed before they play at Providence a week from Friday. That starts a stretch when UNH has only one game (Merrimack) at the Whit over the next month. Four games against the bottom three teams in the standings, then what could be a battle for first place at Maine (who would have thought that!). I am getting way ahead of myself here, but it is clear that UNH is getting into the most important stretch of the season so far.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

The Cats pretty much destroyed the #16 team in the country and grabbed 3 points against two nationally-ranked teams. Good for the ratings and Hockey East standings. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The team put on a great display for Alumni family hockey night.

What a drag being a UMass fan. Pathetic. Talk about a team quitting?

Whatever happened to the "Overrated" chant?

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Bobby Butler is now approaching 100 points for his career as a Wildcat. As of last night effort he has 97 points. Comon Butler.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

Butler should crack the century mark this weekend.

In a remotely related topic, It's too bad Peter LeBlanc isn't right there with Butler. No doubt he would have been better off waiting an extra year to arrive in Durham... but still, I feel like he's been held back with the line configurations. The nearly season-long pairing with Sislo has just not worked.
If you take away the three pp goals Sislo has, he'd be down around 5 points...certainly not a top-line performance, and clearly effecting Leblanc's stats. If the team is going to advance deep into the playoffs, Umile is going to have to address this issue. Alternating Burke and Moses on that line as a remedy has not worked. Regardless of the left wing, Sislo is still pretty quite, and as a result, so is Leblanc. Separating the two upper-classmen may be just what the team ( and LeBlanc) needs to bolster the offense.

Interesting observation. I'm hopeful that having a left-handed left winger on that line, especially with Burke's skills, will result in more left-wing to right-wing passes to Sislo. Thinking back to Saturday's game, it seems that the LeBlanc line is still grinding and playing well in both ends. Would be interesting to look up LeBlanc and Sislo's +/- ratings. Although LeBlanc's numbers may be down since he switched with DeSimone, the move really helped resolve the DeSimone dilema (i.e., figuring out how to utilize his puck handling and play making skills most effectively). The Thompson-DeSimone-Butler line has jelled nicely.

One of Sislo's favorite moves is to skate behind the opposition's net, moving right to left, and zooming around the left circle to position himself at the top of the left circle/slot. The disadvantages of this move is that it leaves Sislo and the left-winger on the same side of the ice and, if LeBlanc has the puck, it forces him to skate to the right side. I think LeBlanc is more effective when he is in the center of the ice in front of the net. Unlike Butler, Sislo seems to prefer to shoot from the left side of the net rather than the right side. Maybe Sislo should be tried at left wing. (I'm kind of rambling here:o )

Sislo is -11, and is the team leader in this catagory.

USCHO.com Rankings - Can someone 'splain it to me?
#16 Maine - UNH wins 5-2
#18 Vermont - UNH wins 5-2
#19 UMass - UNH wins 7-2 and 4-2; UMass wins 4-3 in OT
#20 UNH
I guess the USCHO rankings don't take head-to-head competition into consideration.

That's all a popularity contest. My guess is the problem is UNH's terrible out of conference results.

UVM - 6-1-0 out of conference wins against UMD, Denver Yale (all high in pwr) also took 2 of 3 from BC. The loss was to Denver.

UNH 0-5-1 out of conference . lost 2 to Wis., 1 to Miami, RPI and Cornell (tied miami).

UNH need at least a split against Wisc and Mia and can't lose to RPI. that would move you up into the top 16.

Maine split with Michigan State and beat CC recently.

Besides PWR is all that matters ask UML fans.

Re: 2009-2010 UNH Wildcats Season

The Power Rankings also have UNH behind UMass-Amherst, Maine and Vermont.
The criteria are:

"The PWR compares the top 25 teams in the RPI Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), judging them by four criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, record against other top 25 teams if the team has faced at least 10 top 25 opponents, and the RPI."

Head-to-head competition doesn't appear to outweigh the other criteria.
I realize the rankings in March are all that matter but a better gauge of how the Hockey East team's stack up, IMO, is revealed by head-to-head competition.

Unfortunately, nowhere in here is there a stipulation that says, "We won't count games against non-conference teams who wear red jerseys." If there was, UNH would be all set.

You know, I was thinking the same thing, after the loss to Cornell.

Seriously, every out of conference game this year so far has been against a team that wears read, and we've lost all but one (the tie against Miami), most of them pretty badly. Coincidence? I think not. I still maintain that the DC Head coach should bring the Big Green out in some new, red jersey. They'll beat us 10-0 in Manchester if they do.

Head to head is a better comparison at the end of the year. At the moment, some teams have played each other 3 times, some once. You can not compare for example UNH's 1 win against VT to their OOC with UNH 0-5-1 and UVM 6-1.

Hope you guys pull it off agaist DC this weekend, not that it will help the PWR, but you sure are dragging the interleague record down.

So true. If UNH keeps this up in HE then they can be unranked in the "polls" but their PWR will put them in the top 10. Win the ones you are supposed to and take 4 out of 6 from Maine, BC, UVM and you are in.

A question... With UNH's winless OOC record, does their winning against Hockey East hurt many other Hockey East teams chances come March?

The battle for the River Pebble tonight in Manch-Vegas at the Verizon House of Horrors... I assume the usual 20-19 game will ensue, with UNH still playing some defense optional hockey against the inferior opponent...

UNH is 5-2-1 in the RiverStone, and only one of the losses was "awful" (the 9-8 game in '05); UNH has outscored Dartmouth 38-24. I'm going to guess that UNH will look more like the team that played UML rather than UMA, but I don't think it's going to be as bad as certain people are worried about.

If I remember correctly the tie was bad too... UNH up three goals going into the third and getting the sister kisser...
