2/28, 3/2 Wolverines vs Buckeyes Thread

Re: 2/28, 3/2 Wolverines vs Buckeyes Thread

Guptill. Why can't you just you pretend that every other team Michigan plays is wearing scarlet and gray?!?!
I'll just say that if Guptill is considering turning pro after this season, he certainly has my blessing.;)

As for the Buckeyes, great job tonight by #31, #28 & the entire PK corps.

So.... no comments on the Gedig hit to Kile? If it was Minnesota fan, he'd be tarred and feathered by now.

By the book, should have been a CTH penalty, no more than 2 minutes. But, then again, Guptill scored, so dumb-azz Aaron and co. get off the hook.

Yes that should have been a penalty at least 2 minutes. I thought the game was pretty even up to the 10 minute mark of the 2nd period and then Michigan controlled the last 30 minutes of the hockey game. Tomkins stole those two points for the Buckeyes. These 2 teams have played 3 very tight games and tomorrow should be no different. If Ohio state can pull out the 3 pts they move into 3rd place.

Can both fanbases agree that Brian Aaron is garbage? I mean some of those calls even had former NHL goaltender Darin Eliot scratching his head.

Congrats on the win. Hope to get one more chance at your team in St. Paul

Excellent win.

Wish it was 6 points on the weekend but I will gladly take 3 and one. Luckily for Michigan, wisconsin plays the rest of the regular season on the road where they consistently poo their pants.

I seriously believe PSU beats them at least once in PA. Perhaps Michigan can sneak in and snipe the 2 seed for the tourney. Would love it since I do not want to face PSU in the B1G Tourney.

Also, Michigan moved up from the last team into the 12th in the PWR.

Considering what we saw on Friday, this outcome was sort of surprising. Having that kind of success on the power play is not usual this year, so it's nice to see.

As for play style, perhaps its because the haphazard way our team presents the game makes the other team abandon their play, but OSU did keep the play moving up and down the ice all night. It was more broken up due to pucks going out of play than forcing the puck across the blue line. Games went fairly fast.

one thing to add- I didn't get the name of the OSU player, but whover twisted their foot yesterday- hope everything is ok, and you have a speedy recovery. That looked really really nasty. To the point that they didn't need to repeat the play that many times. big ouch!

From what i am hearing its either a broken Tib or Fibula and yes they did not need to keep showing that at all it looked just nasty.

Sczcechura- hope the kid recovers, although he is a senior. Tough way to end his career.

FWIW, the radio guys mentioned that Red changed up the PP on friday, bringing three guys high and setting the other two low in order to try to get Tompkins to move side to side and set up the one timer shot from the wing. Didn't work well friday, but was hot yesterday. Moffatt has 7 PPG's now on the season.

It was interesting to hear from the FSD guys that the Michigan PK is killing about 87% of their chances in the 2nd half of the season, although they gave up 2 PPG's this weekend. The overall at 82% is not where it should be, but they have improved their kill somewhat.

There is no doubt that PSU is improving, but losing to that team is just not good. Losing twice, like Michigan did, could be the difference between earning a #3 seed or a #2 seed in the Big, and furthermore, it could also affect their at large chances in the NCAA's. I'd be surprised if the Badgers lose to them with what is at stake now. Wisconsin is actually in a position to make a run at Minnesota and even for a regional #1 seed in the NCAA's.

How much of a difference is a #2 or #3 seed in the B1G going to make? Can't imaging much unless you think you'll need to win it all to secure a spot in the NCAA. Bucky is terrible on the road so I'd be shocked if PSU didn't come away with one win

IIRC, the #2 seed plays one less game. #3 plays #6 in first round, so that is a dangerous game. Second of all, they get the last change and are considered the "home" team at the neutral site, for what that is worth.

Think of it this way: IF Michigan hadn't lost twice to PSU and won those games, they would be in 2nd place right now. It also impacted their PWR, too. I'd feel much better about Michigan's B1G tourney chances as the 2nd seed- which probably would have also secured a NCAA at large berth. Right now they are scrambling to stay above the cut line each game. It is not to say that Wisconsin wouldn't have overtaken them- even if they are finishing on the road- considering the Wolverines have Minnesota twice at Yost to close the regular season.

A big difference considering our season record vs. PSU is 2-2 and the 3 seed gets to play Penn State. Another loss to PSU could kill our NCAA tourney chances (depending on how the remainder of the season goes).

Expanding on that thought, they'd be in 2nd place with 33 points and they'd control their own destiny with regards to a regular season title, being 5 points behind Minnesota with 6 points up for grab between the UMs the last weekend of the season.

However, similar ifs can probably be said for many teams and many game outcomes.

Except, similar ifs aren't against a 2 year program. From what I can see, any team like Michigan or similar that loses to them has to look inward before they can say that this team flat out beat them on their best day. PSU got a ton of help in both games and credit to them for taking advantage of it. But, at the same time, I didn't see Minnesota or BC make the same mistakes even in the games where PSU competed hard. That is the biggest take away I see comparing Michigan and Minnesota's journey to the B1G Ten title.
