The power to initiate appropriation bills
The power to indict.

Judges and treaties are the provence of the Senate.

And it takes 2 to tango to pass a bill.

Another one bites the dust

BREAKING: Republican Rep. Paul Cook plans to retire from Congress at the end of his term, becoming the 16th GOP lawmaker to announce their retirement ahead of the 2020 election.

Does anyone have any historical numbers for retirements from the US House before each election? I thought back in 2018 I saw something that suggested that for pretty much each election there are around 40 retirements from the House, but I can't seem to find the article.

That's an excellent question. I'll bet you could reverse engineer by finding the number of vacant seats at each election and then backing out the deaths.

I briefly considered that. But then I thought about people who didn't run for other reasons, like running for Senate or President, reasons that aren't strictly about retirement, and realized that while I was interested in the answer to my question, I wasn't that interested. :p

Democrat oversight going as always.

I think the interesting number isn't the total number of retirements but the R/D ratio. That seems to be an excellent leafing indicator of poll results. For example, in 2018 the House retirements were something like 4:1 R/D and the Rs got destroyed. It's early but right now I believe House retirements are something like 6:1 R/D.

Trust 538 to do it for us for 2018.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/here-are-all-the-republicans-retiring-from-congress-in-2018/

Depending on how you count, 39 Republicans and 18 Democrats are not running for re-election. That includes 13 Republicans and 10 Democrats who are leaving to seek another office, such as governor. Excluding them, 26 Republicans and eight Democrats are walking away from their political careers at the end of the 115th Congress.
