115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Franken now being accused of groping Leann Tweeden during a USO tour.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Welp. Just kill me now.

There's even a picture which Tweeden says shows Franken groping her while she is sleeping. Though, looking at the picture, I think "groping" is a stretch. It's more like childish, pretend groping--over body armor (which would still constitute sexual harassment, at least).

I was watching something last night and it seemed that anyone over $70k would see an increase.

I'll be surprised if I don't end up with a big tax increase.
I'm going to be screwed if they get rid of my exemption for state income taxes!

I'm a sub 200K middle class household. Not rich enough for the GOP to give a **** about, and not poor white trash that's gullible enough to be brainwashed to vote for them despite the fact that their policies would hurt me.

It's looks like he's not actually touching her, but no matter.

That photo is ****ing regardless of "context."

And will be used to great effect.

EDIT: Apparently "D_mn" is banned.

And I won't see a tax increase, and that there is exactly what's wrong with this picture.

It's infuriating that the GOP gets away with this sh-t decade after decade, and reasonably intelligent people who can manage their personal finances and their small businesses with savvy and knowledge keep falling for it.

I understand voting for the GOP if you're a Thumper or a racist. God bless you -- they're the right choice. But GOP fiscal policies have immiserated all but the 1%, so anyone who votes for them for pocketbook issues and who is not a millionaire is a dupe. My god, people, wake up.

I don't even want/need a tax cut. I'm in the top 5%, and I realize I'm better off than most Americans. I live what I would consider a decent middle class life and don't worry about money. Hell, I wouldn't even mind paying a little more if they weren't cutting the taxes for the wealthy.

They can increase my taxes and I won't complain as long as they raise the top rates substantially and slash defense spending

The pic doesn't bug me so much, as it's obviously over the top idiotic humor, but this does:

Tweeden wrote that Franken, who was the headliner on the tour, had written some skits and told her he had a part for her, adding that she "agreed to play along."

"When I saw the script, Franken had written a moment when his character comes at me for a ‘kiss’. I suspected what he was after, but I figured I could turn my head at the last minute, or put my hand over his mouth, to get more laughs from the crowd," she wrote.

"On the day of the show Franken and I were alone backstage going over our lines one last time. He said to me, 'We need to rehearse the kiss.' I laughed and ignored him. Then he said it again. I said something like, ‘Relax Al, this isn’t SNL…we don’t need to rehearse the kiss.’"

She wrote Franken continued to insist and she got "uncomfortable."

"He repeated that actors really need to rehearse everything and that we must practice the kiss. I said ‘OK’ so he would stop badgering me. We did the line leading up to the kiss and then he came at me, put his hand on the back of my head, mashed his lips against mine and aggressively stuck his tongue in my mouth," she wrote.

"I immediately pushed him away with both of my hands against his chest and told him if he ever did that to me again I wouldn’t be so nice about it the next time."

If that's true then Jesus H. Christ dude, I thought you were cool.

This one will be "complicated" by the fact that Tweeden is a conservative and there already appears to be some exaggeration on her part. Will be interesting to hear Franken's side of this.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

What is the threshold for individual/joint filers where there will be a tax increase.

I was watching something last night and it seemed that anyone over $70k would see an increase.

That can't be true...

Anyone know what it is?

I expect mine would go up. I am single and my income is near the threshold of the next bracket as-is.

It's not obviously so as we will all see illustrated soon by the amount of people who don't find it funny.

At minimum, it's incredibly stupid on his part.

I see it as worse than that and I'm far from a prude. You simply can't do things like this - not in this climate or ANY climate.

This bums me out as I want(ed) him to be better than this. Even if he has a plausible explanation, this will be used by others to justify supporting their guy coz... "They're all the same."

Fvck off Al.

You dumb_ss.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Well, to be fair, it being an obvious attempt at humor and it not being funny are not mutually exclusive.

Is she rabid enough to flat out lie in the quote? Dr. Mrs. (with her Womens Studies PhD (even if it is only from UO (that was a joke))) is convinced that half of sexual harassment situations are miscommunications -- people not being on the same wavelength in the highly ambiguous dance of flirting or just messing about. But the quote is NOT that -- it's black and white, it either happened or it didn't. If it did that's harassment, period. There's no other interpretation. So the only other possibility is she's just flat out lying.

My first instinct is I believe the woman in these situations. For one thing, I'm not a courtroom so I don't have to observe innocent until proven guilty -- that's law, not reality. But for another this behavior is so ubiquitous and women statistically are so hesitant to come forward that my burden of proof is on the accused. If she's been proven a habitual liar in other situations, fine, she's likely lying now. But if not... then no, I'm going to go with her story if it just comes down to he said/ she said.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Franken has a long history of attempted humor.

Wish I understood how this was thought to be funny to anyone other than him.

It's insanely stupid.

It's very inappropriate.

But I think it's a (terrible) attempt at humor, he is obviously playing a mad abuser, not being a mad abuser.

Now -- is he playing a mad abuser as a screen to be a mad abuser? That's certainly possible. That's what the accusations against Louis C. K. are: that his "men are pigs" material, which is amazingly funny, is actually a cover (or reflection) or his actual pigishness.

The thing that infuriates me about the quote about the kiss is that isn't playing, it's being. That's not a joke, it's abuse.

Well, it's probably funny to most adolescent boys--which includes our president.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

Yeah, barring evidence that she's a habitual liar, it happened. ****it.

Well, don't need to worry about him running for president in 3 years.

At least we found out about it now.

That's the thing. He's really funny. This stuff is Young Republican level unfunny. His humor instincts are galaxies higher than this.

Re: 115th Congress: On Permanent Vacation

It'd be one thing if he gave her rabbit ears of put a non-offensive prop in a photo while she's sleeping.

He's (hopefully) pretending to grab her breasts.

I can't imagine how that doesn't cross every line possible.
