That's what I recall too. He lasted a little over a year (he was told he had a year to live). A couple of months after surgery he was up and about town again, but IIRC he wasn't seen as much in the weeks or months towards the end, even missing his sister's funeral (I think he died a few weeks after her).

First up for McCain I'm guessing they have to remove the tumor, which I don't know if they can do right away since he's recovering from blood clot surgery in the same area (caused by the tumor they discovered at the time).

I'd love for Drew to explain to me again how the Ds are terrible for the deficit. Paraphrasing:

Schumer - Work with us on taxes, we have only 3 conditions going in. We work together, we don't cut taxes for the 1%, we don't raise the deficit.
McConnell - Nah, we'll just use reconciliation and do it without you.
Schumer - Which of our 3 conditions don't you agree with?

I'm guessing all 3, but I bet little Yitch never answers...

There's no sense in working with that person I have to call a senate representative (unlike some of the wackos around here, he's still my senator), because he's never going to agree with #1. #3 we should all get behind, but given all of his cockamamie socialist spending, I don't think he believes in that either. And last I checked, "the 1%" hardly pays anything on account of corporatist exceptions and "charity" sheltering. So I don't blame McConnell for not wanting to work with Schumer. He had his chance for 8 years, and it didn't work. Now it's time for something that'll actually work.

Look out for Amy McGrath running as a democrat in Kentucky. Her announcement ad was really good.

Re: 115th Congress. In Bridge, Can Hearts be Trumped? In Spades!

Her ad is great...but they will find something to destroy her over even though she is a Vet who fought in the War on Terror. The Witch Hunt will be tough but Dem Good Ole Boys will find a way!!

Does that include hacking election boards to steal 5 states?

Challenge every seat is a good plan in my opinion

Seth Moulton is endorsing many good veterans as candidates.

Contrary to what I'm reading from national columnists I think it'll benefit dems to drop insistence on a pro-abortion stance. In the UP, northern WI and MN pro-life and pro-gun Dems have huge popularity. I suspect it's the same in other rural areas with a strong history of organized labor.

I think you're right. Abortion and guns are two wedge issues that are used to cleave off who should be Democrats (c.f. Catholic Democrats). Let it play out according to local tastes for the time being. No actual policy changes will happen and right now we get destroyed coming out of the gate on rhetoric by the tub thumpers.

The issue is it is of course heresy to coastal social liberals (the exact flipside of the rabid anti-choicers in the Bible belt). That may have some internecine effects but absorbing some difference on this also helps us grow the party's ideology beyond state school sophomore Gender Studies liberalism.

But aren't the coastal social liberals the (current) face of the party? Those Ds are currently strong in population centers and mostly ignored in the rest of the US. They cost you the last election.

Yes and I maintain that is the fundamental problem with the Democratic party. The Democrats right now push social liberalism to the forefront and hide economic liberalism in the attic. That is exactly the opposite of what we should do pragmatically. The Courts have been furthering social liberalism for decades while at the same time destroying economic liberalism and turning this country into a neofeudal state. We should be trumpeting our economic liberalism and making that the centerpiece of our elections. Social liberalism happens sort of automatically: people become more cosmopolitan, more educated, less religious, less parochial, less intolerant, less conservative over time and bigotries erode. We can to some degree allow that to happen as the "long arc of history" which has brought rights first to non-Christians, then blacks, then women, then gays.

What we obviously need to push, hard, is the never-ending fight to keep the rich from enslaving the rest of us. And that is a very popular message to run on.

We have the wrong public face. You are correct.

There's one thing you're wrong about, though: the cartoon image of rural America as a bastion of good sense and good values is dead as a doornail. It's always been a myth but now it's flat out a lie. Not just that, but a self-defeating lie. The US is now majority urban. Urban America is the real America. The "family farm" is bullsh-t -- something like 95% of agriculture is controlled by huge agribusiness. Coal miners might as well be cowboys they are so irrelevant to actual America.

Real Americans now work in office buildings or fast food restaurants or malls. Political campaigns should be built around them rather than atavistic soft focus images of Morning In America which have been irrelevant to the actual experience of real Americans for half a century.

We should drive HARD at the cities and the suburbs. Insofar as there is a rural vote left it chooses to be the Battered Wife of the Republican party -- don't waste a dime on it. We should be using local appeal but to suburban social moderates who have had enough of Wall Street as-sf-cks destroying democracy.

Legalize, regulate, and tax. America is a GREAT country!!

Make America High Again - Booker for President

Putting pot sales on the books would probably double the GDP. Legalize drugs and prostitution and we can finance the entire government solely on excise tax.

Prior to the income tax, that's how we did it. **** that racist Wilson!!

But what to do with all those empty prisons and laid off penitentiary workers?

Judge Smails has a thought on that matter. It involves ditch diggers.

It wasn't a waste of time. It was a way to give minorities prison terms and disenfranchise them. It was politics, not law enforcement.
