RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

Is the first round still a single-game format?

That's a persistent issue with these TU photo galleries. A lot of these galleries capture attendees at charity events, but include no information about the charity, what it supports, or how to learn more. It was nice to see the range of players in the photos, including some from the most recent...

It also looks like orientation of the benches and penalty boxes are going to change (both benches on the current RPI bench side with penalty box on current visitors bench side). Looks like the press box will also switch sides. And it looks like the currently layout of concessions and restrooms...

Shot totals from the last couple of games are encouraging as well.

I've been finding the merch situation pretty underwhelming at many colleges, RPI included. Ugly fonts used for "Rensselaer" and "Engineers" on apparel (examples here). Poor graphic design: the diagonal "RPI" is not bad, but doesn't really work proportionally on apparel other than game sweaters...

RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

How much money have jersey raffles made in the past? I would have guessed raffles raise more money, with a few exceptions, because an auction only captures money from the winning bidder and there is a low ceiling on what most jerseys go for. I also wonder whether there are compliance issues with...

The gondola might have happened, but the proponents of the plan learned about the amount of deferred maintenance at ESP that was going to need to be addressed for it to be built. The challenge with development here is that if you don't take up certain projects when there is momentum, there are...

They would have had to figure out what was possible with I-787 first, a question that persists today. Albany's riverfront is also on a flood plain--there was a reason why it was able to be cheaply scooped up for the interstate spur.

What has unfolded in Albany that has brought it to this point is a long conversation. However, I am optimistic about the new mayor in Albany, Dr. Dorcey Applyrs. She's already signaling that she will examine rolling back some of the zoning laws that have really curtailed interest by private...

I actually think the concert hall in EMPAC is really nice, but underutilized as an entertainment venue. But maybe you can fit a rink in there . . .

In the event of a new arena that makes HFH unavailable, I think RPI should investigate playing home games at the MVP Arena in Albany. Or even up in Glens Falls, which seems to have solid crowds for minor league hockey. Beyond that, local options would be sparse. The HVCC Rink would have been...

RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

The other orientation issue I'm curious about is that the current front rows are above ice level, unlike many arenas. I wonder if the fully refurbished HFH would have front row seats at ice level.

Agreed and made worse by the low numbers of entrances to HFH--some fans have to take a long trip on those walkways. An elevated concourse would reduce this problem, but that suggests that Phase 1B is going to require re-doing the concrete pours that the main grandstands are bolted into.

The velocity of change after NIL and eligibility adjustments is really starting to pick up. I think the landscape of amateur sports is going to look a lot different before the end of the decade. I am not sure this is going to end well for the NCAA.

I think that's a good point, Minnesota being the "State of Hockey" of course. But I'll add that attendance at the college level for the Minnesota hockey teams has also seen its ups and downs over the years. Minnesota also deserves credit for how it handles the high school State Championships...

RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

There is a long term trend of decline for sporting venue attendance across the country, broadly speaking. The primary culprit is that technology has brought more options and convenience to the consumer. You can pretty much watch any sporting event in your home or on your phone. Hockey has the...

RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

Maybe the lines at Sally's, Pepe's, and Modern got too long in this Instagram TikTok age. Certainly an ancillary benefit to seeing hockey in New Haven that has gotten much harder to enjoy on the weekends. ;-)

RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

I like the creativity to incorporate your goaltender into a passing move to facilitate an 3-on-3 OT line change, but this catastrophe illustrates that the basic principles of play still apply: breakout passes through the center of the defensive zone are dangerous.

I noticed that, too, but If I recall correctly he went on to provide examples of skills (passing over/under sticks through the neutral zone) that RPI could not do yet, or something to that effect, so it kind of left it open that his current players could improve. So I thought it was an attempt...
