Boston University Terriers 2026 Offseason Thread

Schedule is out:
Solid schedule. One bitch: BC 2 days before playing them in the first round of the Beanpot? Talk about killing tension.

I know we knew about it already, but I'll say it again, I love having a team bonding trip to a far away land to start the season.

Other highlights from my perspective:
  • 5-0 start on paper (I know, I know, but come on. Alaska? Brown? UVM?)
  • Then a test early (UConn)
  • Two @ MSU (I wish I could go)
  • A Tuesday night game against Harvard (I wish it was at Wally B. 😁 )
  • The Q (Revenge game!)
  • Denver is great, I just wish it wasn't Thanksgiving weekend
  • An upstate NY trip to play an always tough Cornell team and Colgate
  • Late season games against BC
104 days!

Defense and Goaltending will be good
Season comes down to whether Malhotra and Lawrence can give 40-45 points each because nobody else is cracking 25 points

The Athletic polled some of the top draft prospects, asking who they believe is their NHL comparable. Replies from BU recruits:

Caleb Malhotra: "Aleksander Barkov and Jack Eichel. Elite playmakers who have poise offensively and play in all areas."

Niklas Aaram Olsen: "Timo Meier. I think we play similar. But I want to be more like Brandon Hagel to add that grit and be around the crease."

Xavier Villeneuve: 'Lane Hutson. What he’s doing right now is unreal, and his defensive game has an edge to it. If I can get to that, I’ll be good."

I could see Ritchie breaking 25. The talent is there and there was some improvement in the second half of the season. With the way last season went overall, it wouldn’t have been a shock if he left and I take it as a positive sign that he chose to stay.

Talented centers can't do it alone.. If those two are in the 40s, it'll be with strong step-ups from Harvey, Ritchie, Murtagh, Merrill and a healthy Fondrk.

agree about Ritchie- key to season is two unknown to us transfer defensmen
Don't have top end defenders left

im fairly confident in Barone and somewhat confident in Wismer as someone with slightly more knowledge on the two

also with the confirmation that Knowling, Glance, Schairer are all coming in 2027, they'll need to figure out where they play, either CHL or USHL. Knowling has signed with Saginaw Spirit in the OHL, so he remains in Michigan.

Jamie Glance is in QMJHL territory and is drafted by Saint John Sea Dogs who are going all in this year, he would have a great opportunity there. Green Bay Gamblers have his USHL rights. Luke Schairer has rights held by Peterborough Petes in OHL and Sioux Falls Stampede in USHL. Either would be good spots, Petes have some good young talent and Sioux Falls just won the Clark Cup

ESPN article on draft says Lawrence had a tough second half of season…the team had a tough second half, I thought Lawrence was showing a lot of promise.

I think people underestimate how difficult college hockey is. I’d be willing to bet Lawrence has a better season this upcoming season than Malhotra. Just because he’s had a half season to adjust
i agree, and i think the injury issues Lawrence was dealing with to start the year get lost in the story. tough to follow up a Clark Cup MVP-winning performance when you start the season on one foot with your arms tied behind your back. he's going to be a good player and was showing more and more of that by the end of the year.

not surprised Xavier Villeneuve dropped to day 2- that had been predicted by a few draft pundits, but he won't be there long. the other undersized defenseman in this range, Ryan Lin, made it to 21st, and he's considered to have the higher floor. Villeneuve is a high ceiling boom or bust guy. maybe devils or canes would be interested?

the only obvious pick for day 2 is penguins getting Markus Ruck to complete the set, no idea what else could happen here. after all those trades, the sharks dont pick until round 4 so im going to sleep in 💤
